Items 1 to 9 of 22484 total in our Meta Description
-
Our homepage on our ecommerce site has a category as part of the front page. Unfortunately the top of the category says:
Items 1 to 9 of 22484 total
Is there a way through GWMT or any other method of stopping Google from adding this on to the front of our Meta Description?
Or is the only solution to remove it from the page all together?

Yeah we managed to get it to pick up the products for us, normally seemed to take a day or so after the crawl to reflect the change in the serps, although that was going from not showing it to showing it so not sure about the other way around.
But yeah 'items' and 'products' seem to be the words which trigger it, although there may be more...
Best,
Stuart

Hi Stuart,
Yeah I've seen google index it before on Amazon and it says Item, so it might be worth a go. I'll schedule our designer to update this.
I'll report back once it's updated and we've been crawled in case someone else has a similar issue.
Thanks

Hey,
I checked out your site in the UK serps and could see the Google product count snippet, which is different from the meta description (which also seems to be ok).
I'm no expert with Magento but as I mentioned you may be able to hack the Magento code a little bit to say 'Book 1 - 20 of xxxxxx' instead of 'Item 1 - 20 of xxxxxx' which might stop whatever text matching algorithm Google is using - i'd probably search the Magento forums for ways to do this - although it's not guaranteed to work i'd say it's worth a shot.
I'm not aware of any meta tag or anything else which would tell Google not to display this snippet i'm afraid (although I may be wrong).
Best,
Stuart

Hi guys, thanks for the feedback and links.
A bit more info. We're using the open source ecommerce platform Magento.
This is on Google.com.au on our http://www.worldofbooks.com.au site, if you search for World of Books Australia on google.com.au you can see it there at the start.
Our meta description is definitely set on the home page.
Thanks

In trying to see what you were using as a platform I went to Builtwith. In using their plugin, I could only see that you were on Apache, using HTML 4.01, and canonicals. (normally see a lot more)
On the Builtwith site, you come up with them saying you don't have a meta description, H1, etc. When I look at it, these are there so they are in some way not being picked up. (Remember, it is rare for Google to choose a meta description when there is one there.) So, the reason this items 1 to 9 ... is coming up is Google is not seeing the meta either.
Without knowing the particulars of the site, it is a bit more difficult to determine the cause. If you want to see what I am seeing, go to http://builtwith.com and put your site in. You will then get the initial info. Then, at the top, the 4th tab will be yoursite.com SEO profile. Click that and start scrolling and reading.
Hope that further clarifies,
Robert

Hi Ben,
The only experience i've had with this is actually trying to get google to show this little snippet, what I found was that they seemed to just pick this up from the page, when the page had text similar to 'item 1 of x' or 'product 1 of x' - item / product seemed to be the words that google were looking for - only a guess but maybe try something like 'Book 1 - 10 of 22484' on the page and see what google makes of that?
All the best,
Stuart

Hello Benj25
When you say the Meta on your home page, and I am assuming the book site, I don't see it with that category and when I do a search on Google I do not see that in the snippet. (I checked US and .co.uk).
Can you tell us/show us where you are seeing it?
Thanks,

Phone number in Meta Description - Is it a good idea?
Is it a best practice to place your company's phone number in the meta description for a page? Are there any rules as to what is acceptable for meta tags? One of our competitors recently started doing this but for some reason I think it might be against Google's guidelines. They (competitor) is also engaging in web spam, plagiarizing our content, and other black hat techniques so I'm leery of anything they do.

Crawl completed but still says meta description missing
Before the last crawl I went through and made sure all meta descriptions were not missing. However, from the last crawl on the 26th July, it still has the same pages on the list and showed they were crawled as well? Any ideas on why they may still be showing as missing?

Beating big brands for rankings on Google page 1 post Panda & Penguin
Hi all, so having followed lots of SeoMoz guidelines that we have read here and standard SEO ideas we seem to no longer be able to rank for our core keywords.. and certainly not rank in front of the big brands. We're a small eCommerce company and have historically ranked Google positions 1-4 for many of our keywords (a year or two ago)... but now no where near this any more. We always write unique content for our products of usually around 300-400 words per product we include our keywords in Title, meta description and H1 tags. We include buyers guides and set up articles on the site and generally have a reasonable amount of good quality and always uniquely written content Recently we have concentrated to ensure that page load speed is above average and Google Web Master Tools page speed gives us around 80-90 out of 100 We carry out linking and have always done... in the most recent past this has been weighted towards 'content for links' to gain purely incoming links (although in the early days from 2005 we did swap links with other web masters as well as write and publish on article sites etc). product category pages have an intro piece of text that includes the key phrases for that page and is placed as close to the body tag as possible. From what I understand if you are hit by Panda or Penguin the drop off is invariably over night, but we have not seen this... more of a gradual decline over the last year or two (although there was a bit of a downward blip on Panda update 20). Now we're lucky to be on page 2 for what were our main keywords / phrases such as "portable DVD players" or "portable DVD player"... in front of us in every position is a big national brand.. and certainly on page 1 it is purely only a big brand in every postion. They don't have great info from what we can see for these keywords and certainly don't give as much info as we do. For the phrase "portable DVD player" our portable DVD accessories page ranks better than our actual portable DVD player category page... which we also can't understand? This is our portable DVD category page: http://www.3wisemonkeys.co.uk/portable-dvd-players-car Currently we're starting to produce 2 minute product demo videos for as many of our product detail pages as we can and we plan to host these on something such as Vimeo so that content will be unique to our site (rather than YouTube) in order to give us a different format of unique content on many of our product detail pages to improve rankings (and conversion rates as the same time ideally). So ... I am hoping that some one out there can point us in the right direction and shed some light on our declining positions. Are we doing or have done something wrong... or is it in these post Panda / Penguin days extremely difficult for a small business to beat the big brands as Google believes these are what every one wants to see when shopping? Thanks for any comments and / or help.

Duplicate Title Tags and Meta Desc even with the correct Canonical Tag
I show a large/growing number of duplicate title tags and duplicate meta descriptions in my webmaster tools. I look at both pages Link 1 - http://www.thatsmytopper.com/wedding-cake-toppers/theme-cake-toppers/beach-theme-cake-toppers/where/color/petal-pink.html Link 2 - http://www.thatsmytopper.com/wedding-cake-toppers/theme-cake-toppers/beach-theme-cake-toppers/where/color/petal-pink/limit/16.html Both pages have the following canonical url: <link rel="<a class="attribute-value">canonical</a>" href="http://www.thatsmytopper.com/wedding-cake-toppers/theme-cake-toppers/beach-theme-cake-toppers.html" > Why does this show up as a duplicate title tag and description to Google still?

Meta-robots Nofollow on logins and admins
In my SEO MOZ reports I am getting over 400 errors as Meta-robots Nofollow. These are all leading to my admin login page which I do not want robots in. Should I put some code on these pages so the robots know this and don't attempt to and I do not get these errors in my reports?

Website of only circa 20 pages drawing 1,000s of errors?
Hi, One of the websites I run is getting 1,000s of errors for duplicate title / content even though there are only approximately 20 pages. SEOMoz seems to be finding pages that seem to have duplicated themselves. For example a blog page (/blog) is appearing as /blog/blog then blog/blog/blog and so on. Anyone shed some light on why this is occurring? Thanks.

Pdf page titles and descriptions errors
In my weekly crawl report I suddenly have a huge number of title not found and missing page descriptions errors for all of my pdf files. The pdfs do have a page title (defined in the file/properties tab) However these page titles are not being picked up by the crawler or google. Any ideas how do I fix this? ( I am using the Adrobat 9 Distiller)
