Newbie question about long tail keywords
-
I am a little confused as to how search engines see and rank keywords. Let me explain.
If I have a fairly long tail keyword such as "buy natural progesterone cream uk" will the search engine also break this up into smaller parts such as "buy natural progesterone uk"," buy progesterone cream uk", "natural progesterone uk" and so on or will it only see the words that are next to each other like "progesterone cream uk".
Also where does cannibalization come into this?
I really appreciate any help I can get with this that furthers my understanding. Thanks.

Yes, thank you, Marcus. It's really helpful to learn more about the process and thinking behind the process for developing content that includes long tail search terms that will be relevant to readers and helpful for ranking. Cheers!

Marcus, thank you so much for the suggestions, they are excellent!!!

Hey, I did about 5 seconds of research.
Google 'progesterone cream' and skimmed over the first few pages. One was an FAQ with some of these questions skim answered on one page. Perfect candidates for creating a better answer on a single targeted page.
Then, I played around with the suggestions that Google.co.uk made for me when I typed in those words in different orders and then googled around those suggestions to get a few others.
Just do some research. Go to blogs, forums, blog comments, see what questions people are asking and if you can give better answers then you have a piece of content.
If you find a common question that has no authoritative answer then that is a great opportunity and remember the old saying: hard answers make for easy links!
Hope that helps!

Hello Marcus!
Can you please let me know how you found those ideas related to progesterone cream. Did you use Google keyword tool or some other tool(s)? I did a Google search for progesterone cream but it did not return those topics for me. I'm very curious about finding relative keywords for my site. Thank you in advance!

Hey Jean,
If you have this content, and it is working and bringing in visitors, then maybe your time would be better spent on some conversion optimisation and funnelling of that traffic into some kind of soft conversions.
Hope it helps!

Hi Marcus,
I wonder if you found my site? Of the 4 (sensible) suggestions you gave I have 3 pages with pretty much those exact phrases as their title and one that is very similar.!
In total I have around 100 pages on the site and am currently attempting to improve the on-page SEO for them in order to drive more traffic to these supporting information pages.
Sounds like I may have a better grip of this than I thought!
Thank you so much for the help and information. It was very useful to me and so reassuring to someone in a world that is somewhat alien to them.
And the cream really is magic! I know 'cos I use it myself and my husband doesn't have to lock up all the knives anymore.

Thanks Carlos.
SEOMoz says the domain authority is 44 and page authority is 52
I think the content is highly relevant, I would 'cos I wrote it, So I am looking good on that front then I reckon.
Learning this SEO thing seems to raise more questions than I have answers for but I am getting there slowly I think.

Yep, don't try and cram "buy natural progesterone uk"," buy progesterone cream uk" into your text. Google knows you are in the UK and hopefully that you sell progresterone cream.
A better strategy would be to create your product page and then create some content based landing pages to support this page and hoover up traffic looking for information about the product.
A quick Google gave these ideas
-
why do women need progesterone cream
-
how to use progesterone cream
-
how to take progesterone cream
-
what is progesterone cream
-
how to spell progesterone (okay, I made that one up).
But, you get the picture. Have one main page, optimise it and then lots of other pages that support information driven queries that can be used to show an offer for your magic cream and to target a wider range of keywords than the tired old money phrase that everyone is going for. You could even do a free sample or some such incentive to get an email address to keep marketing to these people downstream.
If your information pages are good, they may win some links. You may also be able to build some links to these pages a damn site more easily than to the money page and they will help promote that one for it's targeted phrases.
Hope this helps!

The search engine will break it up, whether you rank for the more competitive variations of "buy natural progesterone cream uk" will depend of the page/domain authority your site has and how relevant your content is to those keywords.

Http to https Canonical Question
Hello Fellow Moz Friends I have recently went from http to https for the website. Do I keep my canonicals at http or make all https? Will this affect ranking signals? Anything I should be looking out for? Thank you.

To subdomain or to subfolder, that is the question.
Hi All, So I have a client that has two restaurants that they are wanting two sites for. Right now they have one site for their two locations that ranks pretty well for some bigger keywords for their style of food. With them wanting two sites, i'm struggling on whether we should just build them all within one site and just use separate folders on that site restaurant.com/location1 & restaurant.com/location2 with a landing page sending you to each, or if we should split it into subdomains. The content will be roughly the same, the menus are identical, i think each branch is just owned by a different family member so they want their own site. I keep leaning towards building it all into one site but i'm not sure. Any ideas?

How long should I keep the 301 redirect file
We've setup an new site and many pages don't exist anymore (clean up done). But for many of them we have new pages with new url's. We've monitored the 404 and have now many URL's redirected with 301 (apache file). How long should we keep this in place? Checking all links manually to see of new url is in place of the old url (in google) is too much work. tx!

Linking to own homepage with keywords as link text
I recently discovered, that previous SEO work on a client's website apparently included setting links from subpages to the homepage using keywords as link text that the whole website should rank for. i.e. (fictional example) a subpage about chocolate would link to the homepage via "Visit the best sweet shop in Dallas and get a free sample." I am dubious about the influence this might have - anybody with any tests? I also think that it is quite weird when considering user friendliness - at least I would not expect such a link to take me to the homepage of the very site I was just on, probably browsing in a relevant page. So, what about such links: actually helpful, mostly don't matter or even potentially harmful? Looking forward to your opinions! Nico

.htaccess newby
Sorry to ask a really dumb question. I want to sort out a load of old 404 errors. I've exported the list of URL and I'm more than happy to go through that and work out what needs to go where. After that my only option at the moment is to use the re-direct function in my WordPress install and do all the work manually. There are loads to do so I want to be able to upload all the re-directs. I know I need to create a htaccess file and upload it. I know where to upload it. This is where I get nervous. I need to get this file right. Is there a really obvious idiots file which I can use and then save as the correct file type? I've got all the URLs in a CSV at the moment. Sorry for being a bit thick. Hope you can help.

Information Architecture Question
I've got a site architecture / branding / SEO question for my own site (http://www.strikemodels.com/). In brief, the site sells kits and accessories for model warships that shoot and sink each other. My husband (Stephen) runs the business, and makes many of the parts we sell in our workshop/garage. Stephen wants to have a section where he talks about the equipment he is building/ using, and give updates on each of the pieces. This is equipment we use to make products, not equipment that we sell. For example, he's building an EDM machine, and getting a plastic injection molding machine and an ultrasonic welder up and running. We have a blog section where we post about updates about items that we sell, how to use our products, etc. This is more of a place for him to talk about what he's doing in the shop, and would also serve in future years as something he could point people to regarding his skills as an engineer if needed. I'm looking for opinions and options as to where to put this. Is there a way to use a different category in the blog and have items in the blog show up under a different page if they're in the "Stephen's Corner" category? Other options would be a separate site just for that, or to do threads on the a forum dedicated to the hobby. I'd prefer to keep things on our own site to keep all of the benefits together. Thoughts on structure or ways to make this work? Things I hadn't thought about? Thanks!

Unique Ip Hosting Question
We have aged domains that have had unique ips for some time. Batch 1 average 2 years old and are in 1st to 5th place in their rankings. Batch 2 are 8 months old and not ranking at all. Will there be any issues associated with moving them all to a reseller account with a single ip address? In addition batch 1 that has good rankings with unique ips is there ever a possibility they will change our ips without notice or for any reason at all that will change and or fluctuate our rankings?
