How can I make Google Webmaster Tools see the robots.txt file when I am doing a .htacces redirec?
-
We are moving a site to a new domain. I have setup an .htaccess file and it is working fine. My problem is that Google Webmaster tools now says it cannot access the robots.txt file on the old site. How can I make it still see the robots.txt file when the .htaccess is doing a full site redirect?
.htaccess currently has:
Options +FollowSymLinks -MultiViews
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www.)?michaelswilderhr.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^ http://www.s2esolutions.com/ [R=301,L]Google webmaster tools is reporting:
Over the last 24 hours, Googlebot encountered 1 errors while attempting to access your robots.txt. To ensure that we didn't crawl any pages listed in that file, we postponed our crawl. Your site's overall robots.txt error rate is 100.0%.

Thank you that seems to be working.

You could add an exception to the htaccess to allow the robots to be loaded. You would do this with by adding another condition. I'd use something like:
<code>Options +FollowSymLinks -MultiViews RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !/robots.txt RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www\.)?michaelswilderhr\.com$ [NC] RewriteRule ^ [http://www.s2esolutions.com/](http://www.s2esolutions.com/) [R=301,L]</code>
Disclaimer: I am lucky enough to have people at work who check these things. This hasn't been checked! Use at your own discretion
However I'll admit that I've never used this. I just stick the 301 in and it all seems to work out fine. Probably done it on hundreds of domains over the years.

Google index graph duration in Google Webmaster Tools
Hello guys, I wonder, my sites are currently being indexed every 7 days, exactly. At Index Status page in GWT. However, this new site gets updated almost everyday, how can I ask google to index faster and more frequently/almost daily? Is it about SItemap.xml frequency ? I changed it today to Daily. Thanks!

Webmaster tools reporting spurious errors?
For the past 3 or so months Webmaster tools has been reporting 404 errors on my pages... The odd thing is that I can't figure out what they are seeing. Here is an example of a link they claim is a 404 antiquebanknotes/nationalcurrency/rare/1895-Ten-Dollar-Bill.aspx This is strange because it's a malformed URL. It says it's linked from this page: http://www.antiquebanknotes.com/antiquebanknotes/rare/1882-twenty-dollar-bill.aspx Which is a URL that doesn't exist. The bolded portion of this URRL shouldn't be there. Can anyone give me an idea what is happening here? Kind regards, Greg

Google Webmaster Tools : no data available
Hi guys I have a website which is 2 years old. Since 03/01/2013 I have no data in Google Webmaster Tools > Trafic > Search queries. The queries, the impressions and the clics dropped suddenly from one day to the next. I checked the rank of my keywords and the traffic of my site. They are stable and didn't move which means that they don't cause the problem. Has anybody had the same problem ? Is it Google Webmaster Tools bug ? Many thanks.

Robots.txt
Hello Everyone, The problem I'm having is not knowing where to have the robots.txt file on our server. We have our main domain (company.com) with a robots.txt file in the root of the site, but we also have our blog (company.com/blog) where were trying to disallow certain directories from being crawled for SEO purposes... Would having the blog in the sub-directory still need its own robots.txt? or can I reference the directories i don't want crawled within the blog using the root robots.txt file? Thanks for your insight on this matter.

Magento - Google Webmaster Crawl Errors
Hi guys, Started my free trial - very impressed - just thought I'd ask a question or two while I can. I've set up the website for http://www.worldofbooks.com (large bookseller in the UK), using Magento. I'm getting a huge amount of not found crawl errors (27,808), I think this is due to URL rewrites, all the errors are in this format (non search friendly): http://www.worldofbooks.com/search_inventory.php?search_text=&category=&tag=Ure&gift_code=&dd_sort_by=price_desc&dd_records_per_page=40&dd_page_number=1 As oppose to this format: http://www.worldofbooks.com/arts-books/history-of-art-design-styles/the-art-book-by-phaidon.html (the re-written URL). This doesn't seem to really be affecting our rankings, we targeted 'cheap books' and 'bargain books' heavily - we're up to 2nd for Cheap Books and 3rd for Bargain Books. So my question is - are these large amount of Crawl errors cause for concern or is it something that will work itself out? And secondly - if it is cause for concern will it be affecting our rankings negatively in any way and what could we do to resolve this issue? Any points in the right direction much appreciated. If you need any more clarification regarding any points I've raised just let me know. Benjamin Edwards

Restricted by robots.txt and soft bounce issues (related).
In our web master tools we have 35K (ish) URLs that are restricted by robots.txt and as have 1200(ish) soft 404s. WE can't seem to figure out how to properly resolve these URLs so that they no longer show up this way. Our traffic from SEO has taken a major hit over the last 2 weeks because of this. Any help? Thanks, Libby
