How to check Google Keyword rankings?
-
Hey,
So I recently watched the DuckDuckGo commercial about Google's results bubble. My question is how can you get the actual keyword rankings of relevant key phrases without Google taking your locations and search history into account?
Would it just be a case of clearing your cache & history from the beginning of time or is there an accurate tool (other than SEOmoz ofc that I can use?
Best regards,
Dan

One note -- de-personalized results are not your "actual" rankings. The majority of Google searches are personalized. Meaning the average searcher will NOT see the SERP that comes up on a de-personalized search. It's still extremely useful to know where you stand when location and history are taken out of the equation.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I've been using incognito mode this morning which has worked pretty well. I'll give this a try too

Personally I don't like GMT for tracking keywords - outside of SEOmoz, i have used and had no problems with SheerSEO - pretty nifty site and tracks words and phrases nicely - plus there is a 60 day free trial

Hi Dan,
As Andy said, Incognito is a great way.
If you need to search loads of queries, you might be better off with Google Webmaster Tools. You can see a wider range of details and gain insight into your change in rankings.
How to do it
Go to the left hand tool bar, select "Traffic", then click "Search Queries".
Here is the Link - but you need to be signed in.
This should give you a fairly comprehensive list of:
- Search Queries
- Impressions
- Clicks
- CTR
- Average Position
What you can also do is just above the queries select the "With Change" tab which will give you movement over time.
There is also a 'Filters' tab at the top that allows you to filter by specific search queries.
The draw back is that you can't go back more than 3 months and the data is aggregated, unlike in Bing Webmaster Tools where you can get exact figures.
To overcome this loss of data due to only being able to go back 3 months it's worth checking out this post on Automating Search Query Downloads written by Ben over at Distilled.
Hope this helps.

You're welcome Dan

Ah totally forgot about Incognito mode.
Thanks!

I use Google Chrome and just open an Incognito window that clears all cache, history, sign-ins etc.
Shift+Cmd+N on the Mac

Why competitors rank with no content & filters
We're investing a lot in on-page content and creating categories/sub categories to target relevant keywords. Although it seems competitors with high domain authorities are clearly dominating in the SERPs and the pages have NO content. They are literally filters that create landing pages. For example when you search "Kaydian Beds", Debenhams rank below the manufacturer with just a filtered page, this page has not been optimised with content to target the keywords, only the META title changes depending on the chosen filter. Link: http://www.debenhams.com/furniture/beds/kaydian Our link: https://kontenta.co.uk/brands/kaydian-beds.html This is very frustrating as quality content should beat pages with little or no content, we will spend some time and get some inbound links to the page to try boost the rankings but does anyone have any similar experiences with anything like this?

Why is this site ranking so well
I just took over an SEO campaign for a company we recently did a website for. The old company created individual landing pages for each city they service, but they didn't have any original content except replacing the city name. We are in the process of creating completely unique content per page. My main issue is that there is a company with no link profile, duplicate content on every page, no social media presence, etc - but consistently ranks for city + fence company The company we are starting to work with is: http://betterdecksandfences.com/ The company that is ranking for everything is: http://www.alcovyfence.com Any ideas?

Good moz rank and trust, terrible page and domain authority
I have this happening both for page and domain. For domain the rank and trust are 5.2 and 5.51 but domain authority is only 48. My competitors with trust and rank between 5.5 and 6 have their domain authority in the 70-80 range. The same happens for home page metrics and the metrics are about the same. What can cause this authority discrepancy?

Google locations question for organic search...
If you set your Google location to "Dallas, TX" and you do a search for "web design dallas", my client shows up #4. If you change your google location to anywhere else in the US, he is #1. How can I be #1 in Dallas and the US? (My client is not really in Dallas but I didn't want to give away the city, their site, etc)
