Hotel website domain
-
I work on a project for a hotel website and look up domain names right now. But I am now not sure wether I should go for a branding of the hotel name in the domain name (e.g. "bellavistahotel.com") or pick the location ("berlinhotel.com") or a mix (e.g. "bellavistaberlin.com). What would be your recommendation?
The content (text, photos, videos) I have is a lot about the location and the hotel itself. I want to connect the Hotel page afterwards with Knowem to hundreds of social networks. My tendency is to go for a branding. Is that a good idea?
Thanks for the help.

Hi Donford,
no, no, no - I find your answers very helpful. Thanks for that. We are in a discussion. Maybe other people have also ideas, which way might the best for a Hotel in a remote area without addresses!
My competitors are branding but with less success agains the non-branded pages with local name in the address. I was now considering to use subdomains like: "hotelname.location.com". Might this be an idea to mix both ways?
And before I forget: There is another problem. The branding itself with the name of the hotel. The name is already 10 letters long and it is not valid anymore on domain search. Need to be very creative today to solve this

Hi Falk,
I was not trying to be critical rather trying to gather information so I may give the best advise I can.
I will admit that having the keywords in the domain name will help, but in the long run from a corporate perspective it isn't ideal.. or perhaps it is for this area / culture / region. You sound like you have considered pretty much all my advise previously but appear to be in a unique situation.
Perhaps, it is common for this country / area / island however you refer to the place.. to use this logic simply because of the unique situation without an address. In such case I would look at the big competitors, and some of the other local businesses and see what they do, I learned not to argue with local cultures.
Hope that helps and good luck

No, i think there are many ways to reach the same thing. But a simple calculation: When I check on google other hotels on the island, then all unbranded with a domain like "XXX Island Hotel" with the same keywords in title, texts, etc. are on top and the branded follow on the bottom.
I know that google is now pushing branded sites but the branding is difficult because of a lack in addresses. Does someone has a solution for that?

Hi Falk,
What I am seeing from your response is you want to target a keyword which includes a location. Do you feel that the only way to accomplish this is by getting that exact domain name, or a partial domain like this keyword?
I believe. if you concede the domain name to the brand and target the keyword on the homepage you'll have the same results. With the benefit of not sounding like a fly by night joint.
-
The problem is that in this area are no proper addresses with house numbers. They only refer to a beach and an island. No postal code nothing. Was already thinking, I just invent a proper address for this place that i can optimize the branding.
The other thought is that people are searching mostly in google for "hotel XXX island". Then a domain which looks like the keywords is maybe better, don't you think?

My Opinion...
Brand provides avenues for longevity.Localized pigeon holes you into local results and relies on EMD or PMD to get rankings. It also appears (to me atleast) a very flaky way to name a business.

Subfolder marketing issue - buying a new domain and 301 to subfolder on existing domain
Hello, I have a specific question and I'll try to be as precise as possible. I have a well ranked domain with good PA. When we were starting our new service I found out that for SEO purposes it would be best to put it under subfolder instead of subdomain or new domain all together because of PA that our domain has. Now, that went pretty well and our new service started appearing in SERPs and is improving rapidly since our link builing strategies were quite sucessful. But there is a problem - we can't advertise our service with a link like this - www.domain.com/subfolder. It's just really messy. And I was wondering if we buy a new domain and 301 redirect it to our subfolder what impacts will that have? If people start linking us as www.newdomain.com will it pass all the juice to www.domain.com/subfolder? Marketing wise I see a lot of benefits using newdomain but I'm afraid it can have SEO downsides and I'm asking for your help to clarify these. Thank you in advance, Best regards, Ivan

Which domain would you choose?
This is more of a survey than anything. If your name was Jeremy Parker, and you were to start a personal blog/site. Assuming jeremyparker.com was not available, which domain would you go with? 1. jeremyparker.net 2. jeremy-parker.com 3. jerpark.com 4. Other. From an SEO standpoint it would be unlikely to make a difference. But from a branding standpoint. Which one would you perceive to be best? Thanks.

Buying a used domain - redirecting, pluses etc?
Hi, I have a 6 year old domain which has been the basis for my main business website operation. http://www.kent-website-designer.co.uk/ Im in the process of cleaning up some messy sitewide footer kinks that come to the notice of Penguin update. I think I can clear up a lot of links but obviously need to add some better links for the future to improve. Ive gone from #1 to #60. I was thinking of a rebrand as the EMD isnt doing much good anymore in benefits plus the drop in rankings and also Google definately favouring brand links over concentrated anchor texts. So maybe the time is ideal. The design needs a refresh anyway.... I have found a 1999 .co.uk domain which has some non keyword related 1999 links to it...nice. Its a very reasonable price. Its not going to have inbounds from my related markets, not ideal but it has no negative stuff either. Also its a very simple but rememberable name like Google or Yahoo. Great for branding. Its parked but Waybackmachine shows indexing back to `99 and google cache has some content on it. However OSE shows low domain / page authority. Im thinking of redirecting my current domain to the new one, passing some of the positives of age and titles...and replicating the site through 301`s. Is this worth doing in anyones opinion? Only thing with my domain isany branding words are anchor text words too. I cant win.

Video Hosting Question - host on website via wistia type solution or upload to youtube and embed?
I have a client that owns a Video production company. They have a lot of video examples of all their different types of services i.e. commercial production, TV broadcast production, business videos, training videos, etc. Where should I host their portfolio of videos, should I: A: Use a paid video hosting solution like wistia B. Upload to youtube or vimeo and embed to my own site The only videos titles with keywords that I could see bringing any type of conversions for their business would be their demo reels, for example: "Atlanta Corporate Video Production Demo Reel." The other videos would be the name of the video "Court TV: Cop On Trial For Killing Wife" and therefore wouldn't bring the kind of visitors that are searching for a video production service. This is why I'm curious about what the best hosting option is. Any advice would be a great help.

Has anyone got any hotel (small) web marketing tips or tricks
I have a client who ranks well for his boutique hotel both in Google search and Google places. The problem now is he needs to fill his rooms next week (type of thing). We are down the Google Adwords route already. But clicks are super expensive (competing against the big hotels). We have also been trying to get his social media rolling and have started a light ad campaign on FB but I can't see clicks translating into our Google analytics account. (so not sold on it but is a lot cheaper than Google adwords) Next on the list is email marketing which we be getting ready for next week to his existing database. And we have been thinking about paid Press Releases but not sure if its worth it. (PRWEB or Prnewswire) One big bonus is he got a number 1 award on Tripadvisor a few months back (which radically spiked hits on site). So, a more long term solution is to approach media directly with a follow up story to the award but that's going to take a bit of time. Anyone had any experience with hotel marketing? Any insights would be great. Thanks

Why does Tripadvisor rank higher than official hotel website?
Hello, I am trying to figure out why Tripadvisor is ranking higher for "Royal Lahaina Resort" than our official site RoyalLahaina.com website. Could any of you help here. It is confusing because our RoyalKona.com and our HawaiiHotels.com (Hotel Chain Group) ranks 1st but for one of the hotels it comes in second to trip advisor. Please help!
