Combining 2 blogs into one. What is quicker, easier and better - rel canonical or an htaccess/ 301?
-
The objective I have is to archive an entire blog (which I no longer have time to keep up) with multiple posts over 4years , into another blog as a a folder. My question: would it be quicker and easier to do a rel canonical, or separately list all pages in htaccess and do a 301 redirect.

Most blogs have some sort of export functionality. I would imagine that should expedite the process for you. As for fixing the internal links... I would take your export file and use something like Notepad++ to find and replace the old URLs.

Is there an easy way to copy all the post page archive /links properly into htaccess for 301? Thanks

Thanks eyepaq. I control the domain hosting so pages is only important in relation to time.

301 is all three at once. .htaccess makes it crazy easy to make all your blog posts 301 to their new home.
Canonical is only when you want to keep both URLs. It lets you suggest to Google which duplicate content will will the index race. 301 is always preferable since it removes the old location and points to the new.

Hi,
It's important to know the number of the pages - as for 301 you do have some limits as far as overall numbers per domain.
If the number is irrelevant (small) then 301 is the best solution for sure.
Hope it helps.

Canonical vs 301 for index.php
Hello, we found recently quite a big error our index.php file had no canonical tag nor was a 301 redirect. So we put a canonical tag to it that it's the main www.examle.com duplicate . Now is there any difference in regards to link juice or Google 301 vs canonical tag ? I read that moz did a 301 from their index php. I understand one difference is that user then can Type in the URL if no 301, but I'm interested about ranking effect of it.

Rel=Canonical Help
The site in question is www.example.com/example. The client has added a rel=canonical tag to this page as . In other words, instead of putting the tag on the pages that are not to be canonical and pointing them to this one, they are doing it backwards and putting the same URL as the canonical one as the page they are putting the tag on. They have done this with thousands of pages. I know this is incorrect, but my question is, until the issue is resolved, are these tags hurting them at all just being there?

Canonical and 301
Hi We have recently restructured our site and 301 redirected some pages. Unfortunately the new page which we 301 to, still had the canonical tags pointing to the old pages. Would this cause google not to index the new pages....?????

424 Crawl Notices Found - Most of these notices are 301 redirects for our blog. Are notices something that would keep me from ranking well for my keywords?
212 are rel canonical and 176 are 301 permanent re-direct. An example of the re-direct is a change I made to the /trackback 302 status on my blog like; http://www.bluesunproperties.com/2012-spring-biker-rally-thunder-beach/trackback/ Are these Crawl Notices something that I should spend resources on, or should I focus more on my errors and warnings?
