Hi Pedro,
I agree with the replies so far. 301 is the best for SEO.
If you already have a .htaccess file then just put one more line into it, similar to the following
redirect 301 ./my-page.html http://www.mysite.com.au/my-new-page.html
If you don't then just make a plain text file and name it .htaccess, put this code into it, and then ftp it to the root of your site.
It will all just work like magic if you have an Apache server or similar. If you have a windows server or something else, then you may in for some more legwork to get the redirect to work.
This is the best approach for non cms websites. For websites like Wordpress you have many more options available through plugins... Yay...!

An htaccess file is one way to do it as a previous response suggested, but there are some easier options. If you're already using an SEO plugin on your Wordpress site, check to see if it has a 301 redirect field and then go enter the new url you'd like it redirected to on the post or page. If you don't have an SEO plugin or one with that option you can easily install a new redirect plugin. I've used "Quick Page/Post Redirect DEV" and I'd recommend it. This also allows you to copy and paste the new url in a field on the post or page and choose the type of redirect you'd like. Make sure to do a 301 if this is a permanent change.

The best way to do this is by adjusting the .htaccess file. The htaccess file directs traffic to the correct page very quickly and efficiently. (An alternative would be to go through WordPress but typically this isn't an efficient alternative.)
The htaccess file is located in the root directory - /httpdocs, /public_html, etc.
At the very end of the htaccess file, add a new line and on that line, you will want to use a line like this. Update the URLs to match whatever you want to redirect from and to.
redirect 301 /servicos-de-marketing-digital/publicidade-online/ http://digitaldiscovery.com.pt/new-page-url-here
The first URL (after redirect 301) is the old URL you are redirecting from. This needs to be a relative URL back to the root directory of the website. The second URL (after the space) is the URL to the new page you are redirecting to. This needs to be an absolute URL (even if it is on the same site).
A couple words of warning on the htaccess file:
First, make sure your URLs do not have any special characters and if they do, make sure you escape them. (Space becomes %20, for example.)
Second, before making any changes to your htaccess file definitely create a backup of what the current htaccess file is. If you make a mistake in the htaccess file it can return an internal server error for your entire site. So, be prepared to roll back if something doesn't go quite right!
There is a good resource on htaccess 301 redirects here. It also talks about a meta refresh option but I'd avoid that as it isn't as good for search engine purposes.

CGI Redirects
Trying to 301 old legacy files like oldsite.com/green/red.cgi/blue/ using this htaccess code: Redirect 301 /green/red.cgi/blue/ http://www.newsite.com/summary-page/
Technical SEO | | SoulSurfer8
Instead it's redirecting to: newsite.com/red.cgi/blue/ FYI oldsite.com's htaccess file does not have any global 301 rules that would conflict Does anyone know if cgi files require a different 301 syntax? Thanks!0 -
When to use mod rewrite / canonical / 301 redirect
Hello, I have taken over the management of a site which has a big problem with duplicate content. The duplicate content is caused by two things: Upper and lower case urls e.g: www.mysite.com/blog and www.mysite.com/Blog The other reason is the use of product filters / pagination which mean you can get to the same 'page' via different filters. The filters generate separate URLs. http://www.mysite.com/casestudy

http://www.cpio.co.uk/casestudy/filter?solution=0" Am I right to assume that for the case sensitive URLs I should use a 301 redirect because I only want the lower page to be shown? For the issue with dynamic URLs should we implement a mod-rewrite and 301 to one page? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Virtual inlcude v.s. Redirect 301
Hi there, I manage a website which use a lot virtual includes ( SSI) because it caused a lot of duplicate content i introduced the Canonical url tag. But i still see bad rankings on some pages who are the leading of the virtual includes. Now i'am wondering is it better to remove all the virtual include pages ( url's) and make a redirect 301 of it. Does anybody know that is better for ranking the head page?

301 redirect after penalty to domain which currently 301 to the penalised domain
Hello all, As I have mentioned in another Q&A, one of our new clients got hit by manual penalty. I checked their link profile and there was a lot of black hat involved. Long story sort, I submitted a reconsiderationr equest which was not enough as it seems 99,9% of his links are bad links. We took the decision to move a newly launched web site from www.websitename.com to www.website-name.com with the latter being an old domain name with good authority and clean link profile. The problem is that at the moment the www.website-name.com is set to 301 redirect to www.websitename.com and what we want to do now is take the web site off www.websitename.com and launch (not 301 as we dont want to pass the penalty to the clean domain) it to www.website-name.com. What is the best practise for this particular case and are there any things i should pay attention to? I would appreciate your advise!

I have an eCommerce store with a lot of 301 redirects. Would that hurt my rankings?
I use BigCommerce, and they have a system where all the URLs are dynamically generated from the name of each product. So if I named a product "widget x y z" the url would be /widget-x-y-z/, and if I changed that to "blue widget x y z", it would change to /blue-widget-x-y-z/ and automatically redirect the old one to the new one. As a result, in 6 months, because of a lot of tweaking and experimenting, I've ended up with a hefty list of 400 redirects. Some of them are very old, and some are recent. So my question is in two parts: a) does having all of these redirects hurt my rankings? b) if so, would deleting them help?

To avoid errors in our Moz crawl, we removed subdomains from our host. (First we tried 301 redirects, also listed as errors.) Now we have backlinks all over the web that are broken. How bad is this, from a pagerank standpoint?
Our MOZ crawl kept telling us we had duplicate page content even though our subdomains were redirected to our main site. (Pages from Wineracks.vigilantinc.com were 301 redirected to vigilantinc.com/wineracks.) Now, to solve that problem, we have removed the wineracks.vigilantinc.com subdomain. The error report is better, but now we have broken backlinks - thousands of them. Is this hurting us worse than the duplicate content problem?

Does 301 redirect of old filenames still work?
I have gone through several revisions of my site. We used to have only static pages in HTML. I had search-engine-optimization.html changed to seo-philippines.html changed to /seo-philippines/ I 301 redirected all of them whenever I change the filenames. This is in the course of 6 years worth of link building and I'm wondering if this has an effect because our rankings go down everytime we do this.

How to verify a page-by-page level 301 redirect was done correctly?
Hello, I told some tech guys to do a page-by-page relevant 301 redirect (as talked about in Matt Cutts video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1lVPrYoBkA) when a company wanted to move to a new domain when their site was getting redesigned. I found out they did a 302 redirect on accident and had to fix that, so now I don't trust they did the page-by-page relevant redirect. I have a feeling they just redirected all of the pages on the old domain to the homepage of the new domain. How could I confirm this suspicion? I run the old domain through screaming frog and it only shows 1 URL - the homepage. Does that mean they took all of the pages on the old domain offline? Thanks!
