Keyword use in online directories
-
I have been adding our website to online directories which quite often allow me to add a brief description of the organization and add a list of Key words. With regards to the keywords should I list keywords from the organisiantion description that I have entered on the site or should I use the key words that we are trying to rank for, that don’t necessarily feature in the description on the site

Hi Hardley,
Dana has listed some great factors to consider when choosing directories. However just consider the relevance of that directory rather than just the raw authority of the site.
Example (I've just been to Australia Zoo, hence this example) You're doing SEO for a company that transports Kaulas. The best link you could get isn't from a high authority site, with a PR of 8, & 1,000,000 links. It's from the most relevant sites. Out there somewhere will be a website on the perils of transporting Kaulas, written by the foremost expert in the world. Target that site.
In the case of directories, you target animal related ones. Because Google will know what the site is about, you won't need to worry about adding a list of keywords.
Hope that help

Dana points out excellent ways to evaluate if a Directory is worth the effort. Considering low quality links can actually hurt the site, I would make directory links a minuscule part of your overall strategy.

Personally I would select the 4-5 keywords that best describe the website, products or business and just stick with those. I don't think inserting a whole bunch of keywords is going to be beneficial, and honestly, the keywords probably don't matter at all. However, I understand that some directories will make keywords a required field so you may have to put something there. I would proceed with caution and just approach it with a "less is more" attitude.
Also, another word about directories, make sure you research them very carefully before you decide to submit. Answer these questions:
How long has the directory existed?
What is the directory's Alexa ranking?
What is its PageRank?
How many inbound links does the directory have?
How many of those inbound links are .edu and .gov links?
Is the directory even in Google's index any more?
Does the directory have real human editors? [try emailing them to see if you get a human answer0
Does the directory just include every site that pays them? If so, reconsider your submission.
Does the directory properly categorize the sites it lists?
If you answer those questions about each one, you'll get a better idea if a particular directory is worth pursuing or not. Also, make sure that this is part of a much larger, broader link-earning strategy.

Do You Risk A Penalty From Local Paid Directories in 2022?
Hi there, I have a client who wants to advertise in a local directory along the lines of "find your nearest plumber". The directory only has paid listings and they are follow links and they also mention your site or generated landing page may get a nice bump on google. Is there a risk that they may get a penalty for using this directory? The client wants to use it regardless of if it gives them an SEO boost but obviously wants to avoid any penalties at all costs. Thoughts on this? Thanks in advance

What do you use to gather and build Links?
I was just wondering what do most people use for gathering and building links? Is OpenSiteExplorer enough? When I am analysing competitors, there are literally thousands of links, how do you scan them and select the ones you want to use? Any other tools?

Individual keyword pages or single page with backlinks and anchor text?
Hi, I was wondering which is the better strategy? People say the keyword dig is the basis for any SEO strategy, which i totally agree with, however, traditionally the strategy for these keywords has been to write fresh content based on sometimes very similar keywords / terms to attract specific keywords traffic... With google getting smarter and smarter, would you say it is safer (if you know you have a very tight and stable backlinking strategy) to backlink a page that has a number of your similar keywords present, with the relevant anchor text on the inbound sites? So in essence the site ranks for multiple keywords..? I hope this makes sense, it's a very difficult one to get out onto paper! 🙂 Many thanks in advance!

Which directory link do I choose to pay for?
Recently I discovered an opportunity for a link on the Better Business Bureau, but it cots $600/yr. In my niche I want the link for nothing more than link building. Is the link worth paying for? (I read the YouMoz post on the subject, but still no definitive answer).

How to target keywords on a new site?
I have a site I launched a few months back, and the niche isn't all that competitive. After a bit of work the domain is now sitting near the bottom of page 2 on google but it's number 2 in yahoo search. I have been manually building the links but they are all targeted to just one keyword, and mainly have the same link text. Will this look suspicious to google, and should I be spreading my anchor text over different keywords? Or is the reason Im ranking so well in yahoo be because they are just picking up more backlinks? 23 from yahoo but only 9 from google.

Is there a way to tell if a directory is passing Page Rank or is devalued?
Hi Mozzers! I was wondering if there is a way to determine if a specific directory is passing Page Rank or if the links have been devalued by Google. Thanks!
