Is directory submission still a valid practice?
-
Hi Guys,
I have few doubts running in my mind on directory submission, do you think it is still a valid practice in link building?. If your answer is "YES", then please correct me..
-
How submitting to directories is a natural link practice?
-
According to Google, links should not be purchased, it should to be created naturally, but if you see, a lot of high authority directories charging amount from people to index links, why Google not stopping those directories (I mean penalizing) and stopping the people who are trying to get indexed by paying.
-
According to me directories holds only bunch of links to some external domains (I hope I am not wrong), then how submitting to them can bring rankings to me?.
Sorry, if I sound stupid in any of my points, but expecting some good answers from you folks..

"bunch of URLs which doesn't have even a single inbound link to them, but ranks #1 on Google for so many competitive keywords" ... competitive keywords ranking at #1 without ANY backlinks? I find this hard to believe, but I'll be happy to be proven wrong. Share some?

Yes, I think it works in some cases with the actually benefits of relevancy and authority of directory we going to take link from in the specific related category we might think a good FIT for us.
-
Bear in mind there are different types of directories. For example human edited directories. My testing seems to support these are defo valid. Without taking what Google recommend too literally, there is also a question of relevance and the fact that there is a marketing world outside SEO. For example if promoting a restaurant in York, a link in a directory of restaurants in York may not necessarily count in pure SEO terms but it would be unwise to not include.
In my view and experience certain directories will help SEO as part of a balanced mix of links.

Hi HDDEPT,
Just wanted to pop in and add that in Local SEO, directory listings are not only still valid, but are the core of citation building which is one of the main practices of Local Search Marketing. In this specific area, Google rewards rather than punishes inclusion in local business directories.
-
Honestly, I am not insulting your intelligence, but do you think they really rank higher because of those directories?. I have bunch of URLs which doesn't have even a single inbound link to them, but ranks #1 on Google for so many competitive keywords. If I am not wrong, then your links are ranking because of your page's content. Please correct me If I am wrong!.
-
Yes it's honestly still a valid practice. I have multiple keywords that rank number one on both Google and Bing where the only links are coming from directories.
-
no it is not. it doesn't work anymore.
-
If it is a valid practice, then how it is natural?, according to Google a link should be acquired, rather than created by a webmaster himself (Am i correct?), then how directory submission will satisfy this condition?. Also how a directory holds authority if it doesn't have great content, instead it was just stuffed with few bunch of links to some external domains?.
I agree with you on the local listings part, because local lists help find people about the local businesses (people might be naturally want to search there to find the local data accurately), but web directories works on the concept of indexing anything..
I believe in what I see, and whenever I search for something on Google or any other search engine I found some great useful blogs or businesses website with great content inside them, I never see any directories in those results (at least in 99% of the cases).
Please correct me if I am wrong!,

Yes in my opinion directory submission is a very valid SEO practice however there are ethical ways to do directory link building and the unethical/borderline black hat methods. Adding your client in sites like local and national directories related to the client's subject matter expertise is a recommended method for link building. A good list is the one recommended by SEOMOZ below:

Kurtis did a great post on this topic that you can read here http://www.seomoz.org/blog/web-directory-submission-danger

Are directories still a valid practice? If so what are some of your favorite and most authoritative directories?
After combing over several competitor sites I have found many if not the majority of their links are from directories. I am curious to know if individuals/companies/seos etc. still use directories, if so what are some of the favorites?

Paid Directory Links
To my surprise, I couldn't find a clear answer to the questions "Do paid directory links violate Google guidelines?" I know Matt Cutt's recently had a video on paid links, but it didn't really cover paid directory links. Are well-curated directory sites that charge for inclusion violate Google's guidelines? A good example would be the business.com directory.

Is Zemanta Still Safe
I have a quick question, I have been watching a conversation on Google+ where someone pointed out that they have found someone using Zemanta (free) but someone have republished the same article over and over to lots of websites. I think they mentioned 12 detected so far. He was concerned that these links would start to be considered spam because they are all identical content on different urls. I know Zemanta has been lauded as great and safe before, but John Mueller from Google has commented and stated that it could be considered a link scheme and therefore he "would not recommend" that it is used. Be good to hear some others thoughts on it! Paul

What to look for in paid directories
I was looking through some of the directories in the seomoz directory list and a lot of them are paid directories. What should i be looking for to decide if these directories are worth paying for a link? obviously if the page my link is listed on is in fact indexed by google. What about the following questions: 1. what about page rank of the page that it's on? Does that matter? i've heard that one page rank 5 link carries the weight of hundreds of page rank zero links. Is this true? 2. What does it mean if the page rank is unranked? Is it worth paying for a link if the page is old and is unranked? 3. i read in an SEO forum that there are many other things i should look at in a directory besides page rank. Obviously traffic is one but what about other not so obvious things? 4. How many directory links at one time is too many? how many is too many over a long period of time? THanks in advance for your help Mozzers! Ron10

Link Bait - Directory Style Resources Page
Hello Mozzers! Basically I want to add a beefed up "resources" page (directory style) to my site to attract in bound links. Below is an example of a site that has a similar directory style resources area. http://www.petfinder.com/shelters.html I was thinking that it might be good to add a resource box in my site footer with links to these resource pages such as: 1) Dog breeder resources
Link Building | | k9byron
2) Dog training resource
3) Dog shelters/kennels
4) Pet health resources
5) Pet care resources And funnel links to my category pages from there .. I was looking for some feedback or any tips or the best way to go about doing this and if anyone knew of a SE friendly script or something that that I might be able to integrate with my site (x-cart / PHP) platform that would make it easy to populate / update, ect Below is a paste of how one person I talked to envisions it: I'd suggest building some pages of value, such as dog resources pages (rescue groups & resources, etc.), adoption resources, etc. I'd guarantee if the resources were very comprehensive and built correctly, you'd get more bang for the buck versus throwing hundreds (or even thousands) away on sub-par links. Case:
http://www.tnj.com/black-history-makers/major-inventions-african-americans (a simple test content page to show this client we could build lifetime links with a few hours of work for a decent-sized resource page) Although very ugly, this is more of a gold mine for links taking the example above:
http://www.enchantedlearning.com/inventors/black.shtml This is just one simple example but I hope you get the concept versus ongoing payments for junk links. The more links you get to internal pages - even the resource guide pages - the more opportunity to link back to core product pages contextually or within the content portion of the page of side columns. The goal is to create funneled links from these resource pages back to your other pages, but doing it in a manner that's not outlandish or spammy in nature.0 -
