Duplicate Page Warnings, hkey and repetitive URLs
-
Hi, we just put our association's site in SEO Moz so we can tackle SEO and we received thousands of duplicate page content and duplicate title warnings. I searched the forum before asking
Appreciate some guidance on how many things are wrong with the URL's below that are getting flagged as duplicate page content.
1. Does the repetition of the page title and section hurt SEO?
2. Does the iMIS15 in the URL (the server) detract from relevant ranking?
3. From the forum, it looks like canonical tags should be added to the version of the page that starts with .....?hkey (is there a way to predict and "canonize" these? Or recommendations?)

Thank you.

Hi John,
Thank you for your input and URL's to find more info, I had looked at the first one but I was not clear that I was referring to repetition in the URL ITSELF.
(the section and page name are both repeated twice)1. Would this repetition within a URL be considered "stuffing" and be bad from an SEO standpoint?
3. The site is ranking better for Imis15 than for the main keywords so the repeating of that word in every url seems to help that word
Appreciate it if you can give me your thoughts on #1.

Hi Lynda -
I hope I can help out here
One. Yes. If you have the same page titles on either pages or section pages, this can hurt SEO because you are targeting the same keywords on the same pages. I recommend reviewing this - http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo/basics-of-search-engine-friendly-design-and-development and this - http://www.seomoz.org/article/search-ranking-factors
Two. I am not familiar with iMIS15, but if this is just a parameter at the end of the URL, that should be ok.
Three. Seems like these are parameters appended onto the URL. A canonical tag will deal with these issues, but it would be better to get the system to stop generating these. You can block them in Google Webmaster Tools, using the Search Parameters section, but this is just a temporary fix. You need to deal with the base of the issue, the fact that the extra parameters are being generated and causing dup content.

Many Pages Being Combined Into One Long Page
Hi All, In talking with my internal developers, UX, and design team there has been a big push to move from a "tabbed" page structure (where as each tab is it's own page) to combining everything into one long page. It looks great from a user experience standpoint, but I'm concerned that we'll decrease in rankings for the tabbed pages that will be going away, even with a 301 in place. I initially recommending#! or pushstate for each "page section" on the long form content. However there are technical limitations with this in our CMS. The next idea I had was to still leave those pages out there and to link to them in the source code, but this approach may get shot down as well. Has anyone else had to solve for this issue? If so, how did you do it?

Issue: Duplicate Page Content > Wordpress Comments Page
Hello Moz Community, I've create a campaign in Moz and received hundreds of errors, regarding "Duplicate Page Content". After some review, I've found that 99% of the errors in the "Duplicate Page Content" report are occurring due to Wordpress creating a new comment page (with the original post detail), if a comment is made on a blog post. The post comment can be displayed on the original blog post, but also viewable on a second URL, created by Wordpress. http://www.Example.com/example-post http://www.Example.com/example-post/comment-page-1 Anyone else experience this issue in Wordpress or this same type of report in Moz? Thanks for your help!

My number of duplicate page title and temporary redirect warnings increased after I enabled Canonical urls. Why? Is this normal?
After receiving my first SEO moz report, I had some duplicate page titles and temporary redirects. I was told enabling Canonical urls would take of this. I enabled the Canonical URLs, but the next report showed that both of those problems had increased three fold after enabled the canonical urls! What happened?

Help! Same page with multiple urls. How is this handled?
I'm using DotNetNuke for many of our sites. DotNetNuke's home page can have multiple VALID URLs that go to the same home page. Example: http://aviation-sms.com http://www.aviation-sms.com http://aviation-sms.com/default.aspx http://www.aviation-sms.com/default.aspx and http://aviation-sms.com/aviationSMS.aspx http://www.aviation-sms.com/aviationSMS.aspx All the above URLs have the same content. In the page header tag, I have: Should I be doing something else? such as removing the "default.aspx"??? I have a blog also that has a boatload of pages. I tried this canonical approach, but I'm not sure SEO Moz likes it and the tool offers me little guidance on this issue.

What is the best URL designed for a product page?
Should a product page URL include the category name and subcategory name in it? Most ecommerce platforms it seems are designed to do have the category and sub-category names included in the URL followed by the product name. If that is the case and the same product is listed in more then 1 category and sub-category then will that product have 2 unique urls and as a result be treated as 2 different product pages by google? And then since it is the same product in two places on the site won't google treat those 2 pages as having duplicate content? SO is it best to not have the category and sub-category names in the URL of a product page? And lastly, is there a preferred character limit for a URL to be less than in size? Thanks!
