Main site is example.com but 301 redirects to example.com/
-
Is this a problem?
Should we remove this example.com/ if possible?
-
Referenced that article because it highlights the importance of consistency in the url string.
-
It's important to highlight that this is a 2009 article...

I suggest you also read this post here and the comments. Discusses the issue at length.

I don't see any real problems in your situation. Try to add a canonical from example.com/ to example.com just to make sure Google understand.
It is not a BIIIIIG deal, but the canonical should guarantee your rankings.

Massive Nonsensical 301 on Large ecommerce Site
We are in the process of launching a large ecommerce site, which is a rebuild. Their old URL structure does not make it possible in our eyes to logically map every URL to it's corresponding new page. We have done our best to properly and manually redirect all pages that were receiving any amount of organic traffic and have also covered all pages that had external links. Our question is we will end up with potentially tens of thousands of 404 errors that will never fix themselves. The manual work will need to stop at some point. Would it be better to leave these 404's the way they are and just let them fall out of the index or should we take everything we cannot assign appropriately to a page like the products root or the home page? I'm also open to hearing any suggestions about how others have solved massive nonsensical 301's. Thanks in advance,

Creating a Target URL For 301 Redirect in Wordpress
I am confused as to what to put in as the target URL. Is this just a new URL that I must create a name for? I am having trouble finding any answer for this on the internet, just more people asking the same question. I am finally realizing that all the information is found right here at SEOmoz to both learn and ask questions about.

How do find where a 301 redirect is located
My report says I have http://www.30minuteseder.com/Passover.blog redirected to http://30minuteseder.com/Passover.blog. It is correct, but I can't find where the 301 redirect is located. I looked in my .htaccess file in the root and it's not there. How do I find it so I can change it?

How long should I keep 301 redirects?
I have modified a the URL structure of a whole section of a website and used mod_rewrite 301 redirect to match the new structure. Now that was around 3 months ago and I was wondering how long should I keep this redirect for? As it is a new website I am quite sure that there are no links around with the old URL structure but still I can see the google bot trying from time to time to access the old URL structure. Shouldn't the google bot learn from this 301 redirect and not go anymore for the old URL?

How to safely reduce the number of 301 redirects / should we be adding so many?
Hi All, We lost a lot of good rankings over the weekend with no obvious cause. Our top keyword went from p3 to p12, for example. Site speed is pretty bad (slower than 92% of sites!) but it has always been pretty bad. I'm on to the dev team to try and crunch this (beyond image optimisation) but I know that something I can effect is the number of 301 redirects we have in place. We have hundreds of 301s because we've been, perhaps incorrectly, adding one every time we find a new crawl error in GWT and it isn't because of a broken link on our site or on an external site where we can't track down the webmaster to fix the link. Is this bad practice, and should we just ignore 404s caused by external broken URLs? If we wanted to reduce these numbers, should we think about removing ones that are only in place due to external broken URLs? Any other tips for safely reducing the number of 301s? Thanks, all! Chris
