Increase of 404 error after change of encoding
-
Hello,
We just have launch a new version of our website with a new utf-8 encoding.
Thing is, we use comma as a separator and since the new website went live, I have a massive increase of 404 error of comma-encoded URL.
Here is an example :
http://web.bons-de-reduction.com/annuaire%2C321-sticker%2Csite%2Cpromotions%2C5941.html
instead of :
http://web.bons-de-reduction.com/annuaire,321-sticker,site,promotions,5941.html
I check with Screaming Frog SEO and Xenu, I can't manage to find any encoded URL.
Is anyone have a clue on how to fix that ?
Thanks
-
I will take a look at it but it's not the issue that SEOMoz tell me as this format concerns only images. It's actually a little trick to do lazyloading on images.
The link you pointed out on your example is good ("/annuaire,amkashop,site,promotion...) as comma are not encoded.
And for your example I see no issue except capitalization.
I bet this is a Moz problem because when I fetch as Googlebot, I don't find encoded URL...

just wanted to give you one more thing that I think would help http://www.w3schools.com/html5/att_meta_charset.asp
I believe you should clean up your encoding and that it will not be a big deal.
Sincerely,
Tom

I thought this may help as well because you do have to clean up your source code
The online quoted-printable encoder tool first encodes the input text in either UTF-8 or ISO-8859-1. The characters are then output according to this schema:
| Character | Result | Comment |
| "=" (0x3D) | =3D | Special handling of the equal sign |
| " " (0x20) to "~" (0x7E) | Unmodified | Printable ASCII (7 bits) |
| Any other | =XX | Hexadecimal char code |Since quoted-printable does not in itself specify the text character encoding, it is important to specify this correctly when used. The online quoted-printable decoder tool attempts to auto-detect the text encoding.
See the Wikipedia article on quoted-printable for more info.

I would use a tool similar to this http://www.percederberg.net/tools/text_converter.html
as you can see your links for your gif photos are encoded "data:image/gif;base64"
please give it a try and tell me if that helps?
Sincerely,
Thomas

Hello and thanks for your answer.
No word involved here.
We move from :
http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />
to
charset="utf-8">
Everything is fine except for Mozbot

what you need to do is go into your site and cleanup the links that have been converted and messed up because of the change. Once you clean them you will have no problem this is what your links look like
data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAP///////yH+A1BTQQAsAAAAAAEAAQAAAgJEAQA7
utf-8 is definitely the right coding it's very good you just have to go in and clean it up looking your source code

I hope I've been of help to you.

Did you happened to possibly write it using Microsoft Word and paste content in? Or are you speaking about a website that you converted from another encoding to Unicode 8?
sincerely,
Thomas

Can you see changes in page authority quarterly?
Is there any definitive answer to when page authority can change? I'm trying to see if it's a trackable metric but not sure since (I believe) it's something that takes time. Is there any article/reference that speaks to the fact that the page authority can take time to change? I do know that changes to the page, competitors pages and a multitude of factors go into the score, but I'm trying to see if there is a 'simple' answer for the timing of the scoring.

What is the best approach to handling 404 errors?
Hello All - I'm a new here and working on the SEO on my site www.shoottokyo.com. When I am finding 4xx (Client Errors) what is the best way to deal with them? I am finding an error like this for example: http://shoottokyo.com/2010/11/28/technology-and-karma/ This may have been caused when I updated my permalinks from shoottokyo.com/2011/09/postname to shoottokyo.com/postname. I was using the plug in Permalinks moved permanently to fix them. Sometimes I am able to find http://shoottokyo.com/a-very-long-week/www.newscafe.jp and I can tell that I simply have a bad link to News Cafe and I can go to the post and correct it but in the case of the first one I can't find out where the crawler even found the problem. I'm using Wordpress. Is it best to just use a plugin like 'Redirection' to move the rest that have errors where I cannot find the source of the issue? Thanks Dave

Perplexed - Errors increasing, moz rank dropping, conflicting data from other sources. Please Help.
Hi there, I'm in a bit of a bind and could seriously do with some help. For the past month I've been working with a client to resolve errors onsite. In that period my moz rank has plummeted and my errors (dupe title & content) have increased dramatically. The correlation makes sense, the increase - not so much. Here's why, screaming frog is reporting that the majority of duplicate titles have been removed or dealt with. I've also got the assurance of the developer that the suggested changes are being implemented. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with the CMS - umbraco - and this is the first time I'm working with this particular developer, so I'm not sure how to gauge progress without using moz tools. So, here are my immediate questions: 1. Why would I get different results from Screaming Frog and Rogerbot? 2. Has anyone here been in a similar situation and could they recommend areas to watch for errors creeping in? 3. Is there a way of identifying which errors have occurred when? Narrowing it down to the week each error occurred would be good enough. 4. Is anybody aware of any inherent SEO flaws in umbraco or common SEO mistakes made using the CMS? 5. is there anything I could provide you with to help you help me? 6. Do you have a suggestion? I'm pretty stuck. Thanks in advance.

Why am I getting an access error when creating my first campaign?
The exact error message is: The change you wanted was rejected. Maybe you tried to change something you didn't have access to. I checked the Word Count and I am definitely <300 keywords. I have also made sure that the Branded Keywords are entered 1 per entry form. My cookies are clear and there should be no issue with my browser.
