Thoughts on using the disavow tool for removed links?
-
Our website has been penalized by Google for the past few months due to unnatural links. We have spent the past 2 months submitting link removal requests to the domain owners with success. However, the Google Webmaster Tools "links to site" has not updated the list. I understand that they update the list of links as they crawl the website, but it has been 6-8 weeks on a lot of them (mostly our biggest offenders). We attempted to send a reconsideration request anyways, hoping Google would see that even though it is still listed, the link isn't actually there.
We received a response that it is still in violation, but I believe it is because the webmaster tools links have not updated and perhaps this is what they go off of. Would you recommend submitting these domains to the disavow tool even though our link has already been removed for the past 6-8 weeks? Or even just listing them with the "#" comment tag so they can see they had been removed? Or would you continue waiting for it to update? Of course, we would like the penalty removed as soon as possible and were concerned that the list hadn't removed these websites the past 6-8 weeks our link had been removed.
Example: This domain shows we have 3,397 within this website. It was an affiliate that had this URL forwarding to our pages: http://www.binet.lv/go.pl?PID=49276714O2422 . This no longer forwards to our webpage and the affiliate has been expired, but the GWT still shows them at the top of the links list.
I also noticed a lot of sites left the links up, but added the nofollow attribute. These are still coming up in the Links list and does not decipher between which do and do not have nofollow. Could the spammy sites with our links as nofollow still be hurting us?
Thanks for any help and recommendations!

Take a look at these two videos from Google for reconsideration

These talk about the reconsideration process and some best practices.

Yes, I agree that the disavow tool should be used as the last case scenario. I am more frustrated that Google is still stating that we are in violation of their guidelines due to unnatural links. But most of the major offenders have removed them and it is still showing up on my Google webmaster tools. I am assuming this is what they look at when determining if we are or aren't.
How long does it take for GWT to update? Our links have been removed for about 4-6 weeks, but they are still showing up on "Links to your site".
Thank you for your time and help! The link reference you gave was very helpful.

The disavow tool is something I would use cautiously! Continue to do the same practices you are currently using (contact the webmasters) and make sure that you are adding quality links going forward. I have a client that had the same issue and we got our rankings back (though not all the way) by contacting webmasters and creating a positive link structure with all of their new links. (they were doing a lot of "blackhat" stuff before they dropped and called us)
If you do decide to use the disavow tool, I would check out this great article by DeJanSEO that they posted back in October (http://dejanseo.com.au/google-link-disavow-complete-guide/)
Let me be clear and say that I'm not saying that every link you want to be removed should go on the disavow document. It should only be used for those excessively spammy links and where you've tried to contact the webmasters and have had no success. You can write notes to Google in your document that tells them the efforts you have made to remove the links. They do actually take that into consideration and if you provide more positive links going forward, that should do the trick.

Manual Links Vs. Smart Links
Hey Everybody, Is there any downside to the smart link plugins that I see all over wordpress? Basically in short I enter a keyword and where I want that link to go (primarily internal) and set the parameters of repetition etc and it automatically adds the link to that. Now other than the obvious situation where it might put a link in an awkward place, is there anything wrong with this sort of software? Part of me things that this sort of software would not be liked by Google, and that it isn't really getting counted as a true link, but i wanted to see if there were other thoughts or experience with this.

Internal Links - First Link Rule Confusion
Hello All - I would like to create a guide for my team of rules for internal links and I could use some help. My understanding is that Google only counts the first link to a page, so any crafted keyword text links within the content do not count if the page in question is linked to from the main navigation. Is this correct? For example, if the menu or drop down menu in main site nav (which exists on all pages of the site) includes a link to a particular section that will be the only one that ever counts since the menu is on every page? Example: let's say a website selling cat toys includes a drop down menu on the homepage with links to "holiday cat toys". Does this mean that no other text links in content on the site will support that page from an SEO perspective since the link is in the main nav and will always be the first one counted? In the past we have added text links in the content on the homepage to important pages on the site. It seems to work, though now I'm questing these tactics based on the first link rule. I would appreciate some advice, clarification, thoughts, etc. Thanks!

Thoughts on creating a resource/recommend links page in order to attain links?
Hey guys, Just wondering, how does Google view reciprocal link building nowadays? I've heard in the past that it's something that Google isn't particularly keen on. However, more recently, I've also read that - as long as the links are decent (and in moderation) - link exchanging is by no means a bad thing. The reason I ask is that I'm thinking of creating a "resource/recommended links page" for a client of mine. Because of their industry, it's really apparent that attaining links is often only possible if there is the opportunity of a reciprocal link in return. Therefore, I'd need to have a resource/recommend links page of my own. Is this something I should go ahead with to make it much easier to attain links? Or should I try to avoid reciprocal links and attempt to pinpoint one-way linking opportunities - even if they're thin on the ground? Any help much as appreciated as always. Cheers.

SEO Consultant Wants to Disavow Organic Links
Hi, We're working with a SEO consultant. They made a second check of our inbound links and want to disavow some of the links that seems organic to me. They claim they're bad by their characteristics. Should we act as they suggest or not? Or should we run from them?;-) Here are some links in question:

To Remove or not to Remove?
Howdy! In the midst of communicating with Google because of a robots.txt issue, we had a bit of a backfire of sorts and received a notice of unnatural links. It's not a horror story or anything. It's seems more like, "Hey, before we address your other issues, here is something you should clean up" although I don't dare put words in Google's mouth. A few years ago we hired an SEO company which shall remain nameless who did some anchor text blog posts for us which at the time, we had no idea was an issue. There aren't an enormous number of these links hanging around, but checking our anchor text, in OSE, we saw that there are around 50 or so. We decided to use removeem.com as an easy way to request removal of these links. However, on first run, removeem returned a large number of anchor text links beyond just these obvious ones that are actually natural links from users, fans or those that sell their goods on our website. Examples of these anchor text links would be: "DEMO" or "Find My Products Here" or "Home Page" http://www.mysite.com/goodstuff/foryoutubuy/html We are a media selling site and we do have a lot of download sites that attempt to "share" content and link back to us via a DEMO link, etc. While these aren't the greatest sites in the world, they are nevertheless natural links. Heck, they are pirating our goods, shouldn't we at least garner the link juice from them?!!? 😉 So, questions: Should we remove all of these links as removem.com suggests or only remove the ones that are unnatural and clarify with google that these other links are natural? Thanks for your help! Craig

Best Link Building technique using SEOMoz tools & Open Site Explorer
Hi, We've been with SEOMoz for a year or two now, but have have kept an eye out for productive link building tools to help the team. To be honest we're struggling with Open Site Explorer because, although it enables us to discover competitors links it doesn't provide much link management functionality. A simple example would be the ability for Open Site Explorer to show links to domains which my clients already have in a different colour, so that we don't waste time exploring dead ends. I'd be very interested to hear tips how other people use the SEOMoz tools to manage their link building as I suspect we may be missing a trick or two... Thanks in advance!

Great idea to get back links in short order; however the links would be unrelated. . Is it worth the effort . BTW, it's a white hat method. Should I proceed?
I have come up with a very creative way to get some great back links using white hat methods. The problem is that the back links to the site would be to an interior page or external promotional website which then have links back to the main website. What kind of value for the main domain would this potentially achieve. What are peopLes thoughts on this idea?

How useful/ damaging is it to have links repeated on every page ?
Our site is dynamic in nature we have tens of thousands of indexed pages with numerous individual brands pages - all of the brand pages are equally important. We are trying to distribute link juice to those pages as much as possible - so my question is --- Is it smart and or useful or perhaps damaging or spammy to have a space on the bottom of each page throughout our site with links to each and every single brand page ? is this practice considered as duplicate content etc ?
