Influencing which page google chooses as the authority for a certain keyword
-
I have spent the last year optimizing my site for a specific keyword that I believed would do well with respect to conversions.
The good news is that my efforts have somewhat succeed. I am now ranking second for a pretty popular keyword, and this effort has definitely increased my traffic.
The bad news is that the target page that shows up for the optimized keywords isn't really the authoritative page on my site for the given keywords. As a result, it is my belief that my bounce rate is increasing and my conversions are decreasing.
To be more specific, let's say I have optimized my site for the keywords "cool widgets". On my site, I am referencing "cool widgets" in key areas such as title, meta keywords etc. I am referencing the above both on my homepage as well as the cool-widgets page.
So, http://www.mysite.com and http://www.mysite.com both contain pretty heavy optimization for "cool widgets". When a user searches "cool widgets", google is displaying mysite.com - however, i'd like it to display mysite.com/cool-widgets like all my competitors.
Is there any advice or light the community can shed on how I might go about correcting this issue? I don't think I want to de-optimize my home page, as I am afraid I might lose that position and not have it replaced with the more relevant target page.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Roy

Thanks Reload! Makes sense - I will get to work on some of your suggestions.

WHat Roy said and you may have tried too hard with your "cool widgets" page. Be sure you haven't over optimized the desired page. Good luck

Hi Royboy,
It's a common issue with SEO, as we don't have the precise control the PPC guys do over our desired landing pages.
First step would be to optimise your internal links, make sure /cool-widgets is very well interlinked from within your own site.
Next build external links into that page. After awhile you may get both pages listed in one SERP, #win. Then you can re-target your home page to a more relevant competitive keyword.
Depending on your external link building, it can take several months though, but is worth doing.
In the mean time, put something very obvious on the home page pointing visitors towards /cool-widgets
Let us know how you get on.

How does Google Tell which are the keywords you're targetting?
Hi! I've quite a number of synonyms and common related keywords and i know that it needs to be only at one page instead of many different pages. The keywords are: delivery service singapore, delivery service, singapore delivery service and delivery service in singapore. Do i need to have an exact variations of each in the content of the page so that google will know i want to target for these keywords. Because i'm trying to make my page to receive an A grade for all these keywords in a page? Do i need to split the keywords into 2 different page to achieve that goal? Thanks!

Local Keywords
Hello everyone. Still loving MOZ. Question: When I research a keyword phrase such as Entertainers it is returning a local search of 15,972. I want to target three specific cities in my area ( Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Akron). When I research the phrase Cleveland Entertainers I'm getting a local search result of 0. Should I just assume that the search is still large enough to use? Should I target Cleveland Entertainers still with feedback of 0? Also is it a good idea to target the word entertainers with three separate pages to three separate cities? I'm planning on making three separate blogs with new content on each. This will not be duplicate content.

Keyword research
I know this is a dumb question but how do I perform a full keyword research in MOZ? Saw this post: http://moz.com/help/pro/researching-high-potential-keywords but that's pretty much outdated. I appreaciate your response. Thanks,Tony

Google Keyword Tool
Hello, Is the Google Keyword Tool the only reliable source for stats on keyword search volume on Google? The tool returns "no data" results for keywords I would expect to have some, if not much, search volume. I would like to cross-check these results, if possible. Thanks!

Two spaces between keywords?
For seo purposes Looking to register a new double (keyword based) domain were popular domains are not available. Keyword difficulty rated for exact keyword is 49% For example, www.(name1)(name2).com (is not available) www.(name1)-(name2).com (is not available) (single space between keywords) What is the next best alternative? www.(name1)--(name2).com (Double space between keywords) www.(name2)(name1).com (reverse keywords with no spaces) www.(name1)s(name2)s.com (adding the letter s to the end of both keywords) or is there a better alternative)

Choosing keywords for similar products on an ecommerce site
In the case of an e-commerce website, can you optimize multiple pages using the same keyword ‘root’ but including different long-tail variances of that ‘root’? For example, say I’m optimizing for a site that sells wallpaper. I found search traffic for the keyword “buy wallpaper online,” but no traffic for “Blue Tinted Wallpaper” (or its variants) and no taffic for “Yellow Plaid Wallpaper” (or its variants). Could I effectively optimize both of these pages using the root “Buy wallpaper online”, yet distinguish the pages by using long-tail variants such as “Buy Blue Tinted Wallpaper Online” and “Buy Yellow plaid Wallpaper Online”? Any examples of this you can point to?
