I'm not a SEO, just a small business owner with the will to succeed. When it comes to the Big Links from real sites, (Technorati, Tech Crunch, Slash Dot, ect.) where do you start? How do you begin the process of getting a good article on a great site?
-
There is several ways to obtain links from the big sites, but as you might understand, the less cost involved the more competition you are facing.
Running good PR effort, might get you the attention (and links) from these big sites. Try not to promote your product as much as providing something that has significant news value related to the site you would like to get featured on. It might be a story of how you are helping in the solving of a problem users are facing, it might be funding news - ask yourself what the users of the big site would LIKE to read, and not what YOU would like them to read. Typical mistake in PR campaigns, is focusing on features instead of benefits.
Adding social bookmarking to your website, might help as well, but again ask your self what the USERS would like to share, and not what YOU want the users to share. In the past, providing valuable easy-to-digest content like infographics was the way to go.

Victim of negative SEO, but will this be believed if the client has not always been whiter than white?
A new client has come to me because they have found themselves in hot water with Google having received a manual spam action for unnatural inbound links. The sad case in this story is that I completely believe that the client has been a victim of an attack by a competitor. They finally made it onto page 1 in their competitive niche, and within a few days random links started appearing on spammy sites (often foreign language sites.) By the time the message came from Google about 2 weeks later several thousand of these links had been built. The first stage was to get the client to be very honest with me about anything he personally had done that might be considered manipulative. Unfortunately following some bad advice several months ago the client purchased one site-wide link (already in the process of removing it.) The same company that gave him this advice also built just under 100 links to his website (over the course of a couple of days) in early December. So - we know the client hasn't been whiter than white, and we are going to undo anything that he had responsibility for asap. We are also working to ensure that he is earning really high quality links in the right way (already have some great press coverage in the pipeline and are working on unique content.) My question is - given some past mistakes made by the client - is there any way that we credibly get across the fact that this recent huge volume of spam is absolutely nothing to do with him in a reconsideration request? Of course we can start work on removing these links and can disavow anything we can't remove - but my expectation is that should this be successful the same competitor is going to continue throwing spam links at my client. I appreciate that previous actions by the client would in themselves have been worthy of a manual spam action - but it seems far too much of a coincidence given the timing if this penalty was unrelated to the recent attack. I'd really appreciate any insights from the Moz community and will look forward to sharing our eventual success story as a YouMoz post! Tom

White hat on a small business budget.
How can a small internet marketing firm build links and do SEO for small business clients? Seems to me the white hat link building would be next to impossible to do while making money at the same time. Say a small business client has $300 per month to spend on internet marketing... how can you possibly do white hat work for that kind of money? If you can... then how?

Best Way to Market a White Paper
Hello everyone, I had to write a white paper for an entirely different purpose than to drive links, but it did come out very well and I think it would be a fantastic tool in my SEO efforts. What do you guys think is the best way to market a white paper? Obviously I will let our email subscribers know about it and place a link to it in a prominent place on the website, but if anyone has any extra ideas, I would love to hear them. Also, what is the best way to host it? Taking the Moz beginners guide for example, I would love to just put it on my server like http://static.seomoz.org/files/SEOmoz-The-Beginners-Guide-To-SEO-2012.pdf but is it necessary that I make it web-friendly like http://moz.com/beginners-guide-to-seo? Can the former do anything for SEO? What if there are links to and from the site? Any advice would be great. Thanks

I was use to with black hat methods (by mistake) , that i was not aware, Some are pure blackhat, that i never did. some time it hard to judge which are black hat. In past google like some links, now most are devalue or got penalty. Now i want to do quality seo work and slow process. any advice will be great regarding quality seo. Thanks.

White, Black, Grey, B.S. Hat?
I was using Open Site Explorer to check out some competition and I noticed that there were a good amount of links coming from a no-name blog Seen Here. Obviously there are 50+ mentions of Express Auto Repair across a few blog posts. I've seen this tactic used before, but does it really do anything for the client, or is this just old school trickery? Thanks for your help.

Obtaining followed links - white or black?
I have just watched the overtake of the number one UK position for garden accessories. The old 1st place holder held it for the last 2.5 years (min) ....taking a look at the back links of the number one holder it seems they are paid links ...as they are little follow image adverts with anchor text posted on the home page of niche blogs, forums and design related website.. ....so is this white hat or black hat?
