Hunting the White Whales?

I'm not a SEO, just a small business owner with the will to succeed. When it comes to the Big Links from real sites, (Technorati, Tech Crunch, Slash Dot, ect.) where do you start? How do you begin the process of getting a good article on a great site?
-
There is several ways to obtain links from the big sites, but as you might understand, the less cost involved the more competition you are facing.
Running good PR effort, might get you the attention (and links) from these big sites. Try not to promote your product as much as providing something that has significant news value related to the site you would like to get featured on. It might be a story of how you are helping in the solving of a problem users are facing, it might be funding news - ask yourself what the users of the big site would LIKE to read, and not what YOU would like them to read. Typical mistake in PR campaigns, is focusing on features instead of benefits.
Adding social bookmarking to your website, might help as well, but again ask your self what the USERS would like to share, and not what YOU want the users to share. In the past, providing valuable easy-to-digest content like infographics was the way to go.

White hat techniques for difficult niches
Hi all. We've been approached by a client in the online gambling sector about white hat link building. Much of our focus is on guest blogging, but most sites have a no gambling policy. I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas for link building ethically for tricky niches.

What is the best white hat seo link building strategy?
My goal is to build links that comply with Google's Quality Guidelines. I am wondering what is the best way to approach webmasters or bloggers about submitting guest posts or writing content. I have done a competitive analysis, and have a list of potential link sources, but I am not sure what approach to take next. Any advice or strategy would be appreciated.

Unrealistic White Hat philosphy
After all of the uproar with Google's recent updates in link building penalties, I am hearing even more from the Nuns of SEO about White Hat techniques and how if you just have great original content all will be right with the world. The truth of the matter is that it is impossible to remain competitive in difficult search verticals without SOME use of link purchasing or SEO aimed link campaigns. If you simply make a great site and wait for people to link to you naturally, your client will fire you before you get link #1. It is what it is, if I'm wrong tell me how.

What white hat article marketing tactics do you use?
It seems there's a lot of negative connotations with the phrase "Article Marketing" as it's associated with spam, spinning, etc. I couldn't find anything other than that, which begs to ask, what are the white hat tactics that you use after you publish your article? What tools do you use to streamline the process? Social Bookmarking? RSS? Any methods you use to score quick backlinks? How do you get your content in front of bloggers?

Hello, I was just wondering what is the best way in terms of time-spent/results to create links to your site. I just saw a couple of videos on article syndication and article spinning and was wondering if this really works. Cheers Luca

Great idea to get back links in short order; however the links would be unrelated. . Is it worth the effort . BTW, it's a white hat method. Should I proceed?
I have come up with a very creative way to get some great back links using white hat methods. The problem is that the back links to the site would be to an interior page or external promotional website which then have links back to the main website. What kind of value for the main domain would this potentially achieve. What are peopLes thoughts on this idea?
