Would removing or making non relevant links no follow boost a site?
-
Hi,
I have just been checking out the backlinks for a prospective new client. It appears they have a number of links that are totally irrelevant to their nature of business and I was wondering if they would improve in the rankings etc if I removed them or made them no follow instead? Or would I simply just be throwing away crucial link juice?
Thanks in advance

You're never going to be able to 100% control who's linking to you. As long as you have a diverse link profile comprised primarily of links earned from developing useful, quality content you won't likely be penalized.
That said, I WOULD evaluate the link profile to determine if it's heavily weighted from sites that Google is scrutinizing i.e. Directories, Low Quality Article Marketing Sites, etc. and determine where you have opportunity to develop social worthy content to elevate your profile.

Instead of removing links, just focus on building new links.
The only time I would remove links is if you were affected by Penguin or a manual penalty (i.e. a large part of your backlink profile comes from shitty sites). Receiving a link from a irrelevant site wouldn't hurt your rankings unless you do it en mass. Removing those links may hurt your authority.
Cheers,
Oleg

Is it detrimental to make a site wide change from .html to .shtml (all pages)?
We have an established website with decent domain authority. My developer inherited the site from another developer and is recommending that we convert all pages from the .html to the .shmtl From an SEO perspective, would this hurt us? Also, if this is not an issue, would updating the canonical help us, or does the canonical setting only deal with the "www." vs. "non-www"? Any insights will be appreciated greatly. Thanks!

We are revamping our site and planning to add many new pages to our site and planning to build links to relevant pages with relevant anchor texts keywords. Also we are planning to add relevant H1, H2 and H3 tags with metatag description and content with keyword rich content specific to that page. Any advise

Redirect from old wordpress site to new php site? Best approach
Hi I have two websites one legacy site done in wordpress the other in php. However I would like to merge the two together and remove the wordpress site. However it has a good link profile and the pages rank well. What is the best approach to do a 301 redirect from the old site with all its pages pointing to the homepage of the new site? If so what's the best way to do this in wordpress? Many thanks

How hard is it to rank above a site that has 300 back links from dex?
I am new to SEO and have started my keyword research. One keyword I would like to rank for has a competing site with over 400 back links, 300 of which are from dex. How hard would it be to outrank links coming from dex?

Why would you remove a canonical link?
Currently, my client's blog makes a duplicate page every time someone comments on a post. The previous SEO consultant told the developer to not put a canonical link directing it to the main blog post. Did taking out the canonical link result in these duplicate pages? My question is why would she recommend this action? Is it best to now add in the canonical link in or should we implement a 301 redirect or insert a index: no follow? Would adding a canonical link keep duplicate pages from happening in the future?

Understanding No Follow
We manage a couple of sites with 100s of pages... Most of the sites have content that is not helpful as landing pages but obviously has relevent content related to our desired search terms. Some of links go off site to another domain. I am trying to understand the issue of "link juice" and if I gain it or lose it by putting "nofollow" designation on some of the page links. Specifically, do I increase the value of my pages if I put no follow tags on lower tier links off of these pages. Here is a page in question - http://www.vahmarketing.com/product/ductless-hoods Is there a best practice or SEO rule for using "no follow"? Thanks, Bob Nance
