Really bad technical SEO and Nofollow
-
I posted a question week ago about a client with really awful SEO errors to the tune of over 75k violations including massive duplicate content (over 8000 pages) and pages with too many links (homepage alone has over 300 links), and I was thinking, why not try to nofollow the product pages which are the ones causing so many issue. They have super low domain authority, and are wasting spider energy, have no incoming links. Thoughts? BTW the entire site is an ecommerce site wth millions of products and each product is its own wordpress blog post...YIKES! Thoughts?

hi,
there are thousands of ecommerce sites with over 200 or 300 links on their home page and they perform pretty well with no fluctuations in their traffic throughout years.
Just a thought.
-
For the record, I've worked on a site with the Yoast plugin that had 260k product "post" items and we showed no duplicate content errors when I left.
-
Oh I guess I should add some other answers - the 75k errors are really every single issue, minor or major according to Microsofts 2007 SEO toolkit - from the MOZ I get over 8000 crawl errors , 31k in warnings and 2k in notices as far as the errors the vast majority is dup page content and for the warnings over 9k are too many links and 3k in overly dynamic urls. The old SEO person I took over from had installed the SEO toolkit I believe - and checked the conical link ad in the notices on the moz I see 1733 of those.
admittedly the technical side of seo is my weakness - surprise surprise, I am sure I am not unique. I can say what to do but how to do it is sometimes hard for me to describe esp in wordpress.

Thanks everyone...and the cononical tagging IMO is the best bet here, and I totally agree that the Yoast plugin looks like the best thing to help with that task but to be honest I am super afraid it will break the website. And yes, no index is what I meant, so meat to say Noindex and follow in the meta tags - and/or using cononical URL priority setting in the meta tags where ever I can.
Migrating is in the plan - I am just impatient and I have been only link building to the homepage in the meantime, but even that is a challenge because obviously I feel like I have to do it 2000 times over to add value.
-
I agree that this may require a migration. Not only will the e-commerce work better for your client, but you'll be able to get things right from the ground up. Or at least more right. All the usual e-commerce platforms have their SEO problems, but it sounds like basically anything would be better than this.
-
Wow....where to begin...
Where are the 75k violations coming from (SEOmoz, Google, etc)?
To you comment: "(homepage alone has over 300 links)"
Google has in it's Webmaster Guidelines that you use around 100 or less links on a given page
To your comment: "each product is its own wordpress blog"
If everything is a Wordpress Post you should be able to canonical all those pages pretty easily. I use the Yoast Plugin for Wordpress SEO. It's amazing what it can do. All you have to do is install it and go to that post and set up the advance portion of the plugin to canonical to the appropriate page.
To your comment: "why not try to nofollow the product pages which are the ones causing so many issue"
This should be resolved with the aforementioned canonical recommendation.
As far as links on a page, I'm a fan of only having links on a page that are are logical or "relevant" next steps for the user. If my page is about baby shampoo, links to shopping cart, contact us and main things are relevant; but so are towels, bathtubs, baby soap, etc. Try to keep the links to a minimum and really try to help the user.
Have you guys submitted your products to Google Product Feed? That may help with traffic too.
I could keep writing for hours but it's a start.
-
Have you considered consolidating the pages? What I mean by that, is if each product has its own wp post then how about sorting it by color, so yellow shirt and blue shirt don't have separate post but one posts with a variation tool within to delineate the colors. Then 301 redirect those old permalinks to the new one? Also, it might be time for a migration like irving weiss said, in which case I would recommend Magento as your eCommerce platform.
-
nofollowing the links won't stop the spiders from finding those pages, that will only throw away your PR. block them out in robots.txt, noindex and/or canonical the duplicate content pages to reign in the number of pages instead.
I would look at the navigational structure and see if you can narrow down the hierarchy a bit if there are 300 links on each page, it's a bit overwhelming for the user. Link to main category pages and on those pages branch out to individual products or sub categories.
"BTW the entire site is an ecommerce site wth millions of products and each product is its own wordpress blog post...YIKES! Thoughts?" I think wordpress is the wrong platform for a large ecommerce site with a million products and a migration might be in order which is a huge undertaking. You must have tons of duplicate title tags and junk on this site, it's inevitable when creating so many pages.

Read this post by Matt Cutts on nofollow and pagerank sculpting
Essentially, you still divide your link authority between the total number of links on the page (including nofollowed links) and only pass authority to the followed links.
So you still pass just as much authority to the links that are followed while reducing the authority to the newly nofollowed link (which doesn't fix your situation from what I can tell).
You can possibly noindex the duplicate pages? I'd have to see specifics before I can say for sure.
Best course of action is a navigation restructure (maybe even site if each product is a post (timely)... should at least be a page(timeless)).
Good luck!

Pagination & SEO
Hi We have automatically created brand pages based on which brand they have in their attributes. At the moment, developers have restricted the ability to properly optimise these for SEO, but I also wanted to look at how we should handle pagination. Example: http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/brand/manutan?page=1 http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/brand/manutan?page=2 http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/brand/manutan?page=3 Should we do any of the following - which I've found in an article: Put no follow on all links located on pagination pages Should we no index these pages as they are wasting crawl budget? - Don’t show links to page 2, 3, 4, 5… 10, 11, 12… at the end of your content but only a link to the next and previous pages so that you won’t dilute your page authority. Or does anyone else have any tips on how to handle these pages? Thank you!

Bad Backlink?
Hi I found this site whilst looking through WMT backlinks to our site: http://www.buildingarena.co.uk/companies/key-industrial-equipment Is this type of iFrame of our site a bad signal to Google? It's not something we've done, so I'd like to know before getting it removed. Thanks!

Multinational SEO
Hi all The situation: We have a .com website that is the core of our business over the last 3 years we have built this into a very sucessful brand. Customers are able to purchase products from our website and have it delivered anywhere in the world. As part of the development of our business we want to obviously rank high within serps regardless of what country our potential customer is from. We understand that we will need to translate much of our website to achieve this and that is something that we have in the pipeline. My question is more aimed at the English speaking countries and how we should optimise our website for these. For example: websitename.com.au and websitename.co.uk were initialy setup as 301 redirects to websitename.com, however, we have now set them up as their own domains which display the exact same content as the .com website. So to clarify the content on websitename.com/product1.html is also on websitename.com.au/product1.html and websitename.co.uk/product1.html What would the best way to ensure that our .com.au and .co.uk gain traction within the appropriate country? Is duplicate content still an issue? All our prices are displayed in USD will this go againts? We use US English (with a sprinkle of chinglish) as our websites copy languange should we change spelling for AU and UK? Does anyone have any case studies and or other reports I can read that may help me find the right solution for us. Thanks Danny

SEO - I just do not seem to get it
Hello All, I came to the forum two weeks ago and prior to that studied SEO until my brain almost melted two weeks before. Now, I've read some great articles here on SEOMoz which have been fantastic. Mainly being this one: http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo. So anyway, I genuinely throught I got it about a week ago. Here's what I did: First I decided on my keyword: "PC Repair Sheffield". Then, I made a website and on-page optimizaed as best as I possibly could (Graded A on the SEOMoz on-page exam tool). So I decided firstly to add myself to the Independant newspaper Business Directory, because it's free and has a great domain authority. I then went to Yahoo answers, found a Question i knew the answer too and made a whole article on the question, I provided a really useful answer and put a link to my full answer in the 'Source' section. This was a NoFollow Link. Every week, I write a new article and put it in my 'Blog' page. In the articles, I like to cover some problem that I've encountered throughout the week, if, for example, I write about a Hard Drive I replaced in Sheffield, I write about that and link it to my 'PC Repair Sheffield' page. Every article contains a video from Youtube, which is another 'NoFollow' link. Past that, I just find forums which are preffereably not 'No Follow' links and try to help people by answering their questions, but putting more details on my site for them toi see, with a link. That is pretty much the extent of what I 'Get' so far. But I do read a lot of the posts on here and I'm always seeing the Experts on SEO criticise these things and say it's bad without actually explaining why, or how to improve this, or what to do instead in some kind of simple way? I mean, this blog i'm writing, is there really any point? It's unlikely anybody is going to see it, sharing it is just a rediculous assumption. Nobody shares a page on how to fix a hard drive from a local sheffield site. I don't think that NoFollow links are a waste of time, but that's my personal assumption. I think that makes it more natural in a way.. 'Write Fresh Content' and get natural links is a crazy suggestion, nobody is ever going to share it. It's just not the way the world works for small businesses. No task is easy, but none are impossible either, i know that I could do SEO, i'm just not entirely sure 'what to do'.

Seo for Q&A site
Hi, I am working on a newly launched Q&A site. We have very few questions and users right now and very very low seo traffic. In order to increase the number of users and seo traffic we intend to create a number of pages containing potential questions. Each page would have the following structure: Question. Ex: "What are the top wholesale suppliers of coffee in China?" Some content. Ex: Are you looking for wholesale suppliers of coffee in China? Post your question here? Question form Some additional content So there would be a page for wholesale suppliers of coffee for every country. We would publish the pages gradually and the content would be unique but yet similar (ex: only the Country changes). What do you think about this approach? Is it a good idea or can it be dangerous? We don't want to incur in any kind of penalization, we just want to give the possibility to people who are looking for specific information to find us and be able to post the request on our website.

Critique My Site For SEO
Hi Everyone, I was wondering if someone might critique my site and let me know what you think. I've done pretty much everything I know to do proper seo for my site. I'd love to hear some critiques about what I am doing wrong. I'm not sure if my titles are okay, being that they are similar amongst pages. The other thing is that for all the javascript buttons on the top I have no followed them since they don't have any anchor text. The way google will crawl my page is through the links in the footer. I was thinking of moving them throughout the body of the page since I hear google isn't giving as much weight to footer links. I also wanted to hear what you think about putting a blog on my site and updating with fresh content as opposed to creating a separate blog and then linking back to my website with anchor text. Thanks for all the help. And glad to be a member Bill
