How to verify a page-by-page level 301 redirect was done correctly?
-
Hello,
I told some tech guys to do a page-by-page relevant 301 redirect (as talked about in Matt Cutts video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1lVPrYoBkA) when a company wanted to move to a new domain when their site was getting redesigned. I found out they did a 302 redirect on accident and had to fix that, so now I don't trust they did the page-by-page relevant redirect. I have a feeling they just redirected all of the pages on the old domain to the homepage of the new domain. How could I confirm this suspicion? I run the old domain through screaming frog and it only shows 1 URL - the homepage. Does that mean they took all of the pages on the old domain offline?
Thanks!

Hi Wayne,
Thanks for the follow up. Unfortunately, I can't get into webmaster tools for the old domain. It says:
"Verify your ownership of http://patioenc.com" Gar. **I guess I'll just ask.
Thanks!**

Hi David,
You need to get into webmaster tools for the old domain. Even though the pages may have been removed you should still be able to see the inbound link reports and hopefully the error reports as well. Here is a screenshot link (it's a clarify link) showing where you would find both of these - http://enzomaticus.clarify-it.com/d/3znqqc
The error report should be your first choice but the linked pages would be a decent second prize.
Let me know if you have any more questions - we've just been through a similar situation and I know what a pain it can be.

Thank you Wayne,
All I have is a SiteMap.aspx file - not an XML. Not sure how to make that work for me.
Do I need to get into webmaster tools for the old domain or the new one? Also, i've looked and looked and cannot find the "404 errors and inbound links section" in webmaster tool. i've tried to figure this out via a Google search but all of the guides are for the old version of Webmaster Tools! Could you please help me navigate to the correct section??
Thanks!

It does sound as if everything was removed from the old domain. Your best bet would probably be to take the old xml sitemap, paste it into excel and use Niels Bosma's SEO Tools to check the http status code of each url. If they have redirected everything correctly it should show 301 status codes. If you end up with a whole bunch of 404 codes you know they didn't implement things correctly.
If you don't have the old xml sitemap then another option is to get into webmaster tools and look for a list of urls in the 404 errors and inbound links sections - that will give you something to work with at least.

301 Redirecting http to https
In the Moz Site Crawl issue, I was seeing an error that said we were temporarily redirecting our homepage to https URLs. So I changed the code in htaccess to make it 301 redirect but I'm still getting the same error. I implemented it last week and we just had a new crawl yesterday. Here is the new code: RewriteEngine on

301 redirects delay in picking up
Hi I have been involved in the redesign/development of a website which has up until now had a lot of international traffic. On day of migration I uploaded all the 301 redirects to the website (wordpress) using Simple 301 redirect plugin. I tested a number of them and they appeared to be working. I also submitted the new sitemaps to Search Console. Since migration international traffic - particularly from countries such as india, Phillipines, Sri Lanka etc have significantly dropped off whereas the local traffic and some of the international traffic such as USA has remained fairly consistent. Looking at Analytics and entrances recently it appears as though search results are/were showing a number of pages with 404's (one in particular which received significant traffic and for which I had created a 301 redirection) - I have checked this page using the old url and it re-directs correctly for me and today asked a colleague in India to also check - he is getting the redirection fine. Does Google.in take a significantly longer time to pick these up in search results? Or am I missing something?

Canonicals & 301 Redirects to new Domain
We will be changing our domain name soon and I want to make sure I'm not painting myself into a corner. Of course, I want to transfer as much link equity as possible. Question #1: Do I need to define a canonical from the old domain to the new domain? Question #2: Do I also need to put 301s in place on the pages with link equity, or is there a way to apply 301s across the entire site on all pages? Any input would be appreciated greatly! Thanks!

Is it good to redirect million of pages on a single page?
My site has 10 lakh approx. genuine urls. But due to some unidentified bugs site has created irrelevant urls 10 million approx. Since we don’t know the origin of these non-relevant links, we want to redirect or remove all these urls. Please suggest is it good to redirect such a high number urls to home page or to throw 404 for these pages. Or any other suggestions to solve this issue.

How to know what pages are 301 redirecting to me?
Hi! It is easy to know if somebody is spam linking your website, looking i.e., looking at open site explorer to analyse the links profile. But, is it possible to know if a competitor of mine is redirecting a bad domain to main with a 301 redirect, thus transfering any bad SEO reputation to me? Best Regards, Daniel

Can I remove 301 redirects after some time?
Hello, We have an very large number of 301 redirects on our site and would like to find a way to remove some of them. Is there a time frame after which Google does not need a 301 any more? For example if A is 301 redirected to B, does Google know after a while not to serve A any more, and replaces any requests for A with B? How about any links that go to A? Or: Is the only option to have all links that pointed to A point to B and then the 301 can be removed after some time? Thank you for you you help!

301 Redirects Change?
Hi, Mozzers- I've noticed pages that are getting 301 redirected are staying out there longer. It used to be that you would implement a 301 redirect and then after a couple of months the old page would disappear out of Google's index. Over the last couple of months I've noticed pages lingering, popping up.... What gives? Thanks in advance! LHC
