Recommended Wordpress themes for great SEO
-
Hi there, I'm trying to decide which theme to use. My main concern is if the theme has been built using a stable framework to ensure plugin compatibility for SEO. Also a general question, does the homepage need to have a certain amount of text content for SEO, or can other pages be SEO optimised with text / keyword? Some of the nicer themes seem to have a sparce text to image ratio on the homepage. I quite like this as an initial 'welcome' but worry this isn't great for SEO. Any suggested themes / advice will be welcome. Thanks

Hi,
Old thread, but wondering if you're able to generate an XML sitemap through Yoast with your Avada theme. There's an open thread on the Theme Fusion forum about the Yoast sitemap returning a 404 error. Just tried and I'm getting the same thing. Wondering if you came up with a workaround.
Thanks

Actually, I just finished a website design using Avada theme - strange coincidence! I just logged into the backend and the traffic lights are working fine. Have you used Yoast before? Avada works fine with Yoast - I just this minute confirmed that. PM me if you have difficulty but if you're entering your post, focus keyword, etc. then hitting Enter on the focus keyword, it should show. I just got a 'traffic light' green though, so it works.

Thanks everyone,
Appreciate the helpful comments and suggestions.
Matt, thanks for the reminder about comparison tools.
I'm new to Wordpress & after a some consideration opted for a Theme called 'AVADA' on Themeforest (http://themeforest.net/item/avada-responsive-multipurpose-theme/2833226). I think it looks great but I wasn't aware of the frameworks e.g. Genesis which Yoast mentions on his blog.
I've added Yoast SEO but the traffic lights don't all seem to work, e.g. content doesn't contain keywords, when the content clearly does. I thought this could be due to a conflict with AVADA not being on the Genesis et al frameworks, but I'm guessing here. There seems to be a general problem with Yoast not accurately displaying the results - anyone else find this and is there any suggestions?
I'm easing over to the Genesis framework to avoid issues. Bede you mention you don't get compatibility problems, ever used Themeforest or Themes outside of these frameworks?
Thanks again...

+1 for Yoast and the comments about it being more important than the theme. I've yet to encounter compatibility issues with the plugin, and we do a lot of development work in WordPress.
Personally, I think a decent paragraph of text is good to have on the homepage. That said, if you've got sub-pages that are more appropriate to your keywords, ranking them is most likely going to yield the best long-term results, even if it takes a bit longer.

I agree with Sara Thesis and Headway but I'd also recommend the Genesis Framework from Studiopress too.
As Matt stated the Yoast plugin is by far the best WordPress SEO plugin to use on your sites.
-
Thesis is a good theme with built in SEO advantages. Headway is great if you are looking for one with the most flexibility.
As Matt said, using Yoast and ensuring everything is set up important is just as important as picking a good theme (if not more)
-
I've had a number of clients ask me this lately and I keep going with the same advice. I recommend the Genesis framework (over Thesis for MANY reasons) and then I recommend making sure your layout is right. Title/logo H1, post titles and related headings H2, subheadings H3, etc.
Check any theme demo against the WC3 validator and Pingdom and run it on one of the many on-site analysis sites, such as http://www.woorank.com/
Once you've seen a demo you like that checks out on those 3 links, Wordpress is mainly a matter of Yoast's Wordpress SEO, a sitemap plugin if you don't like Yoasts. As far as the low text to image ratio, don't forget that most of the themes these days are customizable to let you add more text than you may see to the front page.

Have I chosen the wrong SEO consultant?
Hi all I've very recently started a small chimney sweeping business for which my friend has designed and built a website, kembersembers.co.uk. Not approaching this from a tech-savvy background I have learnt a lot over the past month but am still an utter novice and as such require some form of help to get me up and running. My main and immediate priority (sweeping season starts soon!) was to have it so when my company name, kembers embers, was googled I would come up at the top of the results. I understand this can take a little time but it has been a month now since I indexed and I have been told my domain authority is 0.1% so I have sought help. I don't want to sign up to a 3/6/12 month contract with a firm so I found an SEO consultant local to me who said they could spend a couple of hours doing the right things to hopefully help jump this initial hurdle. I parted with £120 for this which I deemed to be the going rate and they do/did seem honest and professional enough. Upon meeting the consultant he has since told me that he would like to set the website up under a Wordpress template and has cajouled me into changing my hosting over to one he uses also. He says it will take a couple of hours work to do this (there goes my £120) but without this he would hit walls which would be timely to get past and so will save me money in the long run. Do these kind of suggestions ring an alarm bell to anyone? It didn't seem right that a good SEO couldn't work with what I already have so it leads me to the question is this one to avoid? On a side note I have also received bad advice from friends of friends/family who claim to know SEO but have, for example, put me in the direction of a link scheme through fiverr.com which I understand may have done me more damage than good. I am now more aware of white hat vs black hat and wish to proceed with the development of my online presence in an ethical way growing organically. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Newbie SEO ?: Does my About page URL have to contain the word About?
New to WordPress and SEO. Built and launched my website last week. The URL was originally domain/about. However, I installed Yoast plugin and it told me "about" was a stop word. So, without too much thought (my first problem), I changed the url (before Google crawled me) to clearwingcommunications.com/storytelling. Since then, I've noticed that sites I know are optimized have their URL with the word "about." So, is this considered a bad practice? My site HAS been crawled at this point. If I change it back to About and do a 301 redirect, does that hurt reporting? Thanks for your help! Christy

HTTPS, free certificates and Google seo
As we all know, Google decided to give some weight in rankings to encrypted sites. SSL certificate providers are quite a lot out there, but there is also a free alternative (Let’s Encrypt). I've been going over some of these services and compared Godaddy's and the above certificates, and there isn't much of a difference. The question is: using a free certificate would have the same effect as a paid one? I would rather pay for one than be punished for using a free one, but free would be good too.

Phone number for SEO
We have had an interesting question from a client. They have asked if removing their phone number from their website would have an affect on their rankings. Our immediate answer was 'No' but it may affect the Brand, Usability and Customer experience by restricting the methods of contact. This then made us think that perhaps then it could have an effect in the long term. This situation is also complicated by the fact that they do not have a Google Local Plus account for operational, sensitivity reasons (they don't want to openly publicise their address) We believe that there shouldn't be any negative affect but thought we would open a discussion. Thanks in advance for any comments/ideas.

Best website IA/structure for SEO?
What's the current thinking on the best structure of information on a website for SEO? Structure for visitors can be best achieved through navigation menus, but I am more interested in how I should organise my URL structure so Google can make sense of the depth of my site topics. The website is an Asian travel blog so there are essentially two specific types of post on the site. One type is location specific (may be about an attraction, a city, a region or a country). The other type is general (usually about an aspect of travel like travel cash, visas, scams, etc). At the moment, all my general posts are organised like www.asiantraveltips.com/blog/[post-name]. My location-specific posts are organised like www.asiantraveltips.com/[country]/[region-or-city]/[place-name]/ so that Google can see I have depth of topics about each country and region. But I find it hard to keep consistency in this arrangement of URLs and I don't know if I might be better off to just have everything flat and tagged as a blog post like www.asiantraveltips.com/blog/[country]-[region-city]-[post-name]/? What's best practice these days? How are others organising travel blog websites?

SEO Change/Version Control
Hi. Can anyone suggest apps that might be applied for SEO change/version control? I've tried using Excel and Word in the past but both fall short when dealing with multiple client sites. Nothing suitable pops up so far. Specifically I want to be able to log any on-page changes that might impact SEO for historical analysis and possible roll-back (manual) eg change date, page title, headings, url, anchor text, alt image txt, body copy etc. The ability to have one view that can be filtered in various ways including by client and by url would be ideal. Maybe this is something SEOmoz is considering for Pro campaign management? Surely there's demand... Thanks Andy
