Two sides of my business
-
Hi,
I have a website for my business which does nicely in the rankings.
I have recently created a new separate website to target a specific niche area and have put this under a different URL. I'm going for a whole different look, feel, style and layout here so didn't want to just add a new page to my existing site.
The content between the new and existing sites is 95% different, although my contact details (phone, email, address, etc) and some images/logos are the same. WIll Google mind this at all? Thanks!
-
By putting your contact details in your 2nd site as a jpeg - therefore not readable - you can overcome the problem.
-
One thing I would keep in mind is whether the search engines might pick up your sites as separate businesses. If local search ranks aren't a big consideration for you, then I wouldn't worry about it. If they are, you might want to find some way to differentiate your address/phone.
-
i recommend not interlinking at all, but if you do, only one way link the lesser site the the main site.
are they hosted in the same place? that's a dead giveaway also domain registrar
address on the new site can be put in an image
-
This should be ok - if you're going to link between the two sites (I've seen lots of site networks interlink between them in the footer) I'd recommend not using keyword rich anchor text in your links between the sites but rather your brand name as the anchor text or the clean url and not use anchor text at all.
I've seen lots of sites/networks get hit due to this overoptimized site wide anchor text in the footer, so link cleanly.
But I don't think you'll have an issue of duplicate content in the regular algorithms.
For Google Local, you may want to consider getting a unique phone number (and address) if you want a separate place listing, but that may not be enough and you may need more unique info - see this blog post from Mike Blumenthal for more info
Good luck,
Mark

Hi,
As long as you have different content on your new website then everything should be fine. I don't believe having same images will affect your ranking because a lot of people are using Stock Photos or pictures from Flickr. Furthermore, Google can't crawl images. As long as you have a different Alt Text or save the image in a different name, everything should be fine.
I believe the major factor that affects ranking is the content itself. SInce 95% of your contents are different, you should be safe from Google.
Hope this helps!

Are there any negative side effects of having millions of URLs on your site?
After a site upgrade, we found that we have over 3.7 million URLs on our site. Many of these URLs are due to the facet options. Each facet combination yields a different URL. However, we need to do a deeper analysis into these URLs to see if this is the only reason why so many are returning. Does anyone know if there are any negatives of having so many URLs crawled, other than the fact that Google only spends so much time crawling a site? Is the number of URLs something that should be concerning? Any insight appreciated!

Combine two websites or keep them separate after Penguin 3 ranking drop and gain
Since 1995 we had one website which combined our wedding and portrait photography business.(website A) Three years ago we created a new website and new domain name for the portrait photography side. (website B) We did not delete the portrait information from website A. Both sites were ranking well on page one. After Penguin 3 website B is no longer ranking at all. Website A is still ranking well and one of the original portrait pages on the website A is now ranking on page one also. I am wondering what to do and considering the below options: 1. Should I go back to a combined wedding and portrait site? (and delete website B) 2. Should I create a "301" from the original portrait page on website A that is now ranking, to website B that is no longer ranking, and delete all portrait content from website A? 3. Will having a combined wedding and portrait site be harder to rank as they are competing against each other, or will they help each other rank? Any comments or advice greatly appreciated. Thanks

Anyone using Adobe Business Catalyst and Fixing SEO URL Blog Updates?
Does anyone else have experience with the current update Adobe Business Catalyst has announced for their blog features? Florin at BC offered the code below: http://www.graeagle.com/images/fb_blog_og_img.jpg" /> However nether myself nor another commentator can figure out how to make it work: I added the meta data to my template but it seems the tags are not correct. For example, the tag {tag_blogpostmetatitle} does not automatically include the SEO title that I've called out in my individual blog post. So, it appears the browser is ignoring the tag and just including it as is. When I view the source for my live blog article, this is what I get for the lines that I've added the code in the tag: Also, I cannot get schema metadata to work on the BC blog. For example, I have used it on this page: http://www.homedestination.com/_blog/Real_Estate_Blog/post/things_to_know_before_building_a_new_home/; which yields the following in Google's Rich Snippet Tool: Extracted structured data rdfa-node property: title: {tag_blogpostmetatitle} description:__{tag_blogpostmetadescription}

Small business sites banned by google. Please help.
Hi. My 2 sites http://www.painterdublin.com and http://www.tilers-dublin.com were banned by google update in November 2012. Both were ranking fairly well in search results: painterdublin generating cca 600/month and tilers-dublin cca 300/month organic traffic from google. After update it is about 70% less. Is there anyone willing to take a look at my pages and give me some advice about what to do to improve the situation? thank you very much

Penalty on two primary keywords
Hi Seomoz, I have been strugling to get www.texaspoker.dk out of what seems to be a keyword specific penalty (we are on page 5 on "poker" and "online poker"). First I thought it was Penguin related, but I'm not so sure any longer. I have removed all the bad links to my site possible (it's not easy to get other people to remove links, I can tell you), and I have reported all the links that I would like google to "ignore" (reconsideration request) ... all in all I have requested for reconsideration 5 times, and - despite some small changes - I got the same answer every time. We violate the quality guide lines and we should be looking for unnatural links pointing to our site. If any one - by having a look at our site - have any idea what could be wrong, please don't hold back, we would love to hear your point of view. Right now we are in the middle of making our partners take off their site wide links to us (the partners you'll find if you click the flags to the right in the top of the home page). On Texaspoker.dk we only link to the partners from the home page, but maybe we should consider to take of even these links? No one is really clicking on them anyway. Another thing, which is only under consideration, is to ask our partners from Betxpert.com (with whom we have exchanged our news feed - you will find their feed if you schroll down the home page) to set the feed to "no follow" and do the same our selves. What do you think of this thought? As far as I can see, there is nothing wrong with the on page optimization, but maybe some one can see what I don't see? Again - what ever thoughts you guys may have - shoot ... i'm ready to take all bulets 🙂 Thanks in advance! Nicolai, Texaspoker.dk
