Posting on Forums for SEO benefit

Hi
Is it beneficial to participate on forums in our market place to help become an authority in Googles eyes?
I assume even if we don't get links it still useful in terms of co-citation...
Thanks

already doing FB, just looking for more opportunities.

I'd spend my time in FB discussions instead - forums are spam havens, and FB is safe nofollowed links where you can build your brand awareness safely since this is what you want to do.
Even if a forum looks OK today, word could get out and the next thing you know 200 spammers posted viagra and casino links below you.

LOL, I was gonna respond

Hi
The plan is to join relevant forums and post useful answers to questions and try to help out users. We have good knowledge in our market place. Not to worried about links just getting our name out there....

In a word: no.
There's a rough sort of hierarchy for where links come from. Up near the top, you've got mainstream news websites, reputable blogs and so on. Somewhere near the bottom, along with the likes of free, spammy directories, SEO press release sites and article directories are forum links.
They've been devalued substantially. Even on pages that show a decent PA/DA (just the way the Moz algo works), forum links carry very little strength. If you're using them to build an SEO benefit, then you're wasting your time.
Now, forums that are close to your market/niche and have an active community can be a great way to build potential leads - providing that you become part of the community yourself and are not there to just drop your link and go. I'd certainly look at the possibility of that, should you have relevant forums in your industry.

Negative SEO
I have got some idiot bombarding my site with spam links, most likely a negative SEO attempt. It started off very small and has ramped up to between five and 10 spam links per day. I think it may be having a slightly negative affect although difficult to tell. I can do a link cleanup, but I'm not sure that is a long term solution, I'm just going have to do it again in a few weeks time. Does anyone have any experience?

Optimizing a Forum (phpbb3)
Hi all, Over the last 6 months our small forum has be getting a tiny bit of traffic. We would like to make the forum a larger part of what we are offering (content wise). Regardless, I am wondering if anyone had any recommendations for optimizing a phpbb3 forum as Moz seems to keep telling me that I have 70,000 pieces of duplicate content, duplicate pages, etc. While the site crawl by moz outputs varying results week to week, it appears to be tagging posts and responses to posts as duplicate content. I am concerned that Google may be doing the same. Additionally, are there any recommendations for best practices related to forum meta descriptions and page titling as well? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Jared P.

Where to place your important links to gain maximum SEO benefits . Left or Right?
People spent **more than twice as much time looking at the left side **of the page and that is the reason it's good practice to place your important links in left side.

Syndicated Posts Not Ranking, Possible Solutions?
All, We used to allow users of our legal information site to syndicate content that was published in identical form on their blogs and, in some cases, other sites as well. No surprise that post-Panda, we're not ranking for those syndicated posts, they offer very little value. We still boast a very nice library of original content that drives traffic, however, I'm concerned that those lingering syndicated posts are bringing down our overall domain authority/credibility. Right now, syndicated posts account for roughly 25%-30% of overall site content. I'd like your opinions as to whether I should: 1. Delete the syndicated posts and 301 to an original page; 2. Do nothing 3. Do something I've yet to think of Any insight is welcomed! John
