Why my good links disappeared from gWMT?
-
Hi
Last night some of my good links suddenly stopped from being display displayed at the WMT list of links
Any thoghts?
Thanks
-
Jason,
Thanks for the update.
Yeah it seems pretty clear that it's a bug at this point. Not fun while it lasts though
-
There's an updated response from Googles John Mueller:
"Thanks for the report, Anne (and thanks for escalating, Stevie!). This looks like an issue with how the data is displayed in Webmaster Tools, it shouldn't affect your site's crawling, indexing or ranking. I don't have any specifics at the moment, but the team is looking into the details to see what we can do here. Thanks for your patience & sorry for the confusion!"

It could be...I guess the only way to verify is to wait and see if those links reappear in GWT then measuring traffic/ranking data before and after
-
I was wondering if by error they are only showing the links that count, to be clear.
As for some reporting loss of ranking, this may be coincidental or imaginative.
Just a thought
-
Alan,
My only questions are, (if GWT reports links that "count")
What would account for some sites reporting loss of ranking and other sites reporting no loss of ranking?
If this were simply a cosmetic change within GWT than no one would see change in ranking b/c deleted links didn't count to begin with, right?
Unless Google has changed what links "count".
-
Could it be, that's these are the only links that Google actually counts?
-
Jason,
Thanks for the quick response and informative link. I hope you are right, it does seem like you are, but we will have to wait and see in the meantime. And I'll have to just keep on looking for other traffic sources. Best of luck
-
It looks like when this happened back in August of 2011 it took up to two weeks to fix.
http://www.seroundtable.com/google-links-bug-13886.html
I have to imagine that it's just a temporary hiccup because my site lost links from major media institutions like Bloomberg and Forbes. I can't image those links would have been "devalued". Give it some time and watch your traffic. Mine is normal today and I imagine that it would have cratered if all my links had actually disappeared.
Good Luck,
Jason

My site has been affected by this issue (loss of links) as well, with pretty decent hits to rankings and traffic, in particular my main keywords. Generally speaking how long/what does it take to take reach some consensus as to whether it is an update or a just a temporary hiccup?
-
My corporate site went from 140K+ links on Webmasters tools to 133 overnight. I lost links from Forbes, Bloomberg, and some universities so they were good links. It has to be an error. My brand new site is down from several hundred links to showing no data at all.
I'll wait it out but traffic doesn't seem to be affected one way or the other.
-
From what I read here, it seems to be a error, https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/webmasters/webmaster-tools/_r3YwCyJvB4%5B1-25-true%5D
I have sites that have lost most of their links, but rankings remain the same.
-
Lots of people are reporting this in the forums. Barry Schwartz writes a post about it on Search Engine Roundtable at http://www.seroundtable.com/google-webmaster-tools-link-count-16315.html.
-
Just saw on another post that they are having problems. Will wait another day or two...
-
Beytznet - I've had exactly the same problem, except ALL my links are gone - It's so frustrating!

Links from a penalised site.
Hey Mozzers, Recently we have had a series of agencies in to pitch for work, one group mentioned that due to our association with a possibly penalised product review website, any links and activity associated with the brand would hinder our SEO. We currently have a good rating, but we are now no longer pushing our customers to the site as we move to a new platform. The current link back from this website is also no-followed. Any thoughts on how this could impact us? And how the agencies determined the site was penalised and causing us problems. Cheers Tim

Reasonable to Ask URL of Link from SEO Providing New Links before Link Activation?
My firm has hired an SEO to create links to our site. We asked the SEO to provide a list of domains that they are targeting for potential links. The SEO did not agree to this request on the grounds that the list is their unique intellectual property. Alternatively I asked the SEO to provide the URL that will be linking to our site before the link is activated. The SEO did not agree to this. However, they did say we could provide comments afterwards so they could tweak their efforts when the next 4-5 links are obtained next month. The SEO is adamant that the links will not be spam. For whatever it is worth the SEO was highly recommended. I am an end user; the owner and operator of a commercial real estate site, not an SEO or marketing professional. Is this protectiveness over process and data typical of link building providers? I want to be fair with the provider and hope I will be working with them a long time, however I want to ensure I receive high quality links. Should I be concerned? Thanks,

Linking from purchased businesses to my own
Hi All, An SEO and Google guidelines question. We've recently purchased several local businesses that have websites. Legally, we've put a disclaimer saying we've purchased those businesses, the question is whether we should link from those sites to our main site. Will this bring a manual action from Google? It's legitimate that we'd like the visitors from those websites come to our main site because those business no longer named the way they were. So, is it OK to link from these sites to ours? Will this violate Google's guidelines regarding backlinking? Should we even link and if so add the rel:nofollow tag? Thanks!

Linking to URLs With Hash (#) in Them
How does link juice flow when linking to URLs with the hash tag in them? If I link to this page, which generates a pop-over on my homepage that gives info about my special offer, where will the link juice go to? homepage.com/#specialoffer Will the link juice go to the homepage? Will it go nowhere? Will it go to the hash URL above? I'd like to publish an annual/evergreen sort of offer that will generate lots of links. And instead of driving those links to homepage.com/offer, I was hoping to get that link juice to flow to the homepage, or maybe even a product page, instead. And just updating the pop over information each year as the offer changes. I've seen competitors do it this way but wanted to see what the community here things in terms of linking to URLs with the hash tag in them. Can also be a use case for using hash tags in URLs for tracking purposes maybe?

Worthwhile to have global footer links?
About Us, FAQ, Site Map, Terms & Privacy - I know rarely viewed by users (at least on my website), so why keep in global footer across all pages, since one could argue it will dilute some link juice to more important pages? Why not just keep on homepage only? What is argument for having links to these pages across all pages on a site? Is there any SEO value?

Link Building on a small budget
Hi Folks I'm looking for recommendations from the community that can help me tic the requirements below; Looking for link-building services for a small start up. Prefer to work directly with the person doing the work. Prefer that they speak English 🙂 Have a small monthly budget so not looking for big organisations, rather a expert who is working on his/her own, and can have a phone conversation with me before engagement. Any-hoots I may be looking for a needle in a haystack here but any recommendations on people would be highly appreciated 🙂 PS: I know SEOmoz recommends some folks, but wow they are expensive ... can't afford that

Linking to Authorities
Hello, I know that if its good for the user, its not a bad move. But for this question I am specifically asking for how it affects my ranking. Does it help my ranking to link to appropriate authority sites?
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | tylerfraser
Have you done any tests to see if linking out to authoritative sites like .gov info pages, industry leaders, etc. help with a sites ranking. I am thinking about taking of all of these outgoing links and just link to my important pages. Thank you, Tyler0
