Why is the Page Authority of my product pages so low?
-
My domain authority is 35 (homepage Page Authority = 45) and my website has been up for years:
Most random pages on my site (like this one) have a Page Authority of around 20. However, as a whole, the individual pages of my products rank exceptionally low. Like these:
http://www.rainchainsdirect.com/products/copper-channel-link-rain-chain (Page Authority = 1)
http://www.rainchainsdirect.com/collections/todays-deals/products/contempo-chain (Page Authority = 1)
I was thinking that for whatever reason they have such low authority, that it may explain why these pages rank lower in google for specific searches using my exact product name (in other words, other sites that are piggybacking of my unique products are ranking higher for my product in a specific name search than the original product itself on my site)
In any event, I'm trying to get some perspective on why these pages remain with the same non-existent Page Authority. Can anyone help to shed some light on why and what can be done about it?
Thanks!

A very strong home page will help out wack landing pages. If you have the time to breeze through chapter 7, it may help to grow the popularity: http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo.
There are way too many factors in trying to find out why one page ranks over another.
And let me tell you one thing.... always remember this.... OSE is not that accurate, but it's the next best thing to have since you can't get your competitors username/pass to GWT. Compare your GWT inbound links to OSE's inbound links to see if there is a difference.
My recommendation is work on your pages. Jesus Christ! If you were Google, would you rank a page with only 3 sentences? http://www.rainchainsdirect.com/collections/todays-deals/products/contempo-chain Those pages are probably bringing down the rest of your site.
Sorry to sound so blunt, but that's my answer.

Hey csblev, like I said page authority is largely determined by backlinks, both internal and external. If you run your pages through Open Site Explorer you will see that there are more links going to the higher page authority page compared to the lower ones.
Again, if you want to increase page authority, you can either link to the products more prominently from your high authority pages (like your homepage) or get external links to them.

Hi Takeshi,
Yes, I understand the basics of SEO in terms of linking. However, my point is that lesser pages (also with little or no inbound linking to them) are outranking my pages. Even though these very pages are based off of my very product.
Also, other pages on my site that don't have external linking have much better Page Authority. So my question is: why do these pages have exceptionally poor Page Authority as compared to similar pages (in terms of their link profiles) that have much better Page Authority.
It's almost as if the structure of these kinds of pages are demoted in terms of authority. I am trying to understand why.

The best way to improve page authority (and rankings) is by getting links, both external and internal. For internal linking, highlight your most important/popular products on your home page and other high page authority pages. For external links, try to get people to link to your inner pages & product pages, not just your home page. That will improve the page authority for those pages.

Author schema and Wordpress Author Page
Hi everyone, Has anyone tried using the author schema on their Wordpress author page or on their G+ profile or on their Moz profile? Would it be a good idea to always use it where you publish? I publish on several blogs Thanks Carla example: Use it here - http://www.posicionamientowebenbuscadores.com/blog/author/carla/ http://moz.com/community/users/392216 It seems like I would be over doing it.

Is the Authority of Individual Pages Diluted When You Add New Pages?
I was wondering if the authority of individual pages is diluted when you add new pages (in Google's view). Suppose your site had 100 pages and you added 100 new pages (without getting any new links). Would the average authority of the original pages significantly decrease and result in a drop in search traffic to the original pages? Do you worry that adding more pages will hurt pages that were previously published?

Pages extensions
Hi guys, We're in the process of moving one of our sites to a newer version of the CMS. The new version doesn't support page extensions (.aspx) but we'll keep them for all existing pages (about 8,000) to avoid redirects. The technical team is wondering about the new pages - does it make any difference if the new pages are without extensions, except for usability? Thanks!

Server Vs Authority
Deciding on whether to go for a Sub directory or CC tld structure. So the tradeoff would be one server location (which can affect local rankings if the server is outside the country) VS a better passing of link authority. What factor is more important?

Best URL Structure for Product Pages?
I am happy with my URLs and my ecommerce site ranks well over all, but I have a question about product URL's. Specifically when the products have multiple attributes such as "color". I use a header URL in order to present the 'style' of products, www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-GIB-LPCCT-LIST and I allow each 'color' to have it's own URL so people can send or bookmark a specific item. www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-GIB-LPCCT-ANCH1 www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-GIB-LPCCT-WRCH1 I use a rel canonical to show that the header URL is the URL search engines should be indexing and to avoid duplicate content issues from having the exact same info, MP3's, PDF's, Video's accessories, etc on each specific item URL. I also have a 'noindex no follow' on the specific item URL. These header URLs rank well, but when using tools like SEOMoz, which I love, my header pages fail for using rel canonical and 'noindex no follow' I've considered only having the header URL, but I like the idea of shoppers being able to get to the specific product URL. Do I need the no index no follow? Do I even need the rel canonical? Any suggestions?

Page rank 2 for home page, 3 for service pages
Hey guys, I have noticed with one of our new sites, the home page is showing page rank two, whereas 2 of the internal service pages are showing as 3. I have checked with both open site explorer and yahoo back links and there are by far more links to the home page. All quality and relevant directory submissions and blog comments. The site is only 4 months old, I wonder if anyone can shed any light on the fact 2 of the lesser linked pages are showing higher PR? Thanks 🙂

If you only want your home page to rank, can you use rel="canonical" on all your other pages?
If you have a lot of pages with 1 or 2 inbound links, what would be the effect of using rel="canonical" to point all those pages to the home page? Would it boost the rankings of the home page? As I understand it, your long-tail keyword traffic would start landing on the home page instead of finding what they were looking for. That would be bad, but might be worth it.
