Why are my competitors ranking higher?
-
I know there could be numerous reasons here why they may be ranking higher but I hope I can get some answers from the details that I provide below
I am looking at one particular page so its
- www.mydomain.com/urlhere.html
- I have page rank 5 on this url
- I have had the domain for 7 years
- I have videos on this page (my competitors do too)
- I have 65 linking root domains
- 14,000 inbound links to this page.
- I have 6 keyword phrases in my title tag
My main competitor has a lot more pages and has been around longer, but has lower page rank and lower inbound links to that page. They also have less words in the title tag.
-
Again, it's really hard to hypothesize without knowing the specific site because there could be a ton of other things at play you may just not be seeing.
Videos are content so if they have a lot of videos, then they don't have 0 content. Especially if they have a transcript or CC file attached to it that can be crawled. And, if they have a video sitemap and how their hosting is set up all factor in to some degree.
Even with the changes to Google's algo, links are still powerful, especially links from .gov or .edu - just a few of those can mean more than tons of links from regular .com sites.
-
As in most cases of seo, there's always a slew of things. i've reduced the 404's but these shouldn't have any implication on my landing pages, the competitor in question certainly has more edu links. But i would not say they freshen the content more.
It is most probably better domain rank in that case, in which I will look into building my domain rank. and improving my on page optimisation (which im yet to figure out which is the best route through the other thread).
-
The strange thing that I find about my competitor is that they do not have great content, they actually have almost 0 content, and it is either filled with a video or a link to a site holding the video. What they do however have is age, they've been around for a very very long time, and have some edu links, but all in all, the site is really bad. Could those links be the only thing propping the page up?
I, in the mean time (in another thread) identified with the help of seomoz private some issues with my site, and i created another thread which relates to video, content and where they should be placed on a page and if ads above the fold hurt serps, but then you have the dilemna of loosing revenue.
I have started updating my content and providing very relevant and useful content.

Great point - the entire domain has influence. It's not just a page to page comparison.
-
I agree with Andrea's comments. I'd also like to highlight the answer from within the question.
"My main competitor has a lot more pages".
Great content, strengthens your entire website. Attracts more social media activity, more shares, more time spent on site etc etc. So If I were you, I'd see what I can do to provide useful content. Find the gaps. Look at your analytics, see what keywords people are using to come to your website. Do you update your content ? Is there an opportunity there ? If you can, see what people are looking for in your site-search.
I hope this helps.

It could be a whole slew of things, as you know, and if you'd share actual domains, it could help uncover reasons. Better on page optimization? Fewer 404 errors or technical hiccups? They may have fewer inbound links but do they have more .edu or .gov which have more credibility? Do they freshen their content more?
Less words in the title tag is a moot point - do they have better keywords? You say "lower inbound links to that page" when if, as a whole, they have a better domain rank (vs just page rank), that can influence.
There's a lot of ways that this can be sliced.

Lost ALL my rankings
Dear experts, We have suddenly lost all our positions on our keywords, I’m talking for example from position 2 to 35 in one huge drop ☹ . Even when you search for our name and domain name namely “KV16”, the main page does NOT come up. (We do however still get the local business / map result on the right side!) I have looked in google search console, but nothing to see here – no penalty. However, I need to mention, that we just now, after the issue, setup the google search console – so maybe that is why there is no information about a penalty!? (If the problem is a penalty, btw we have not been doing any link building!) One year ago, we made a permanent redirect from our old site, www.kontoret-gammeltorv.dk, because we moved our coworking office, to a new location, and needed a new name – (because the old name is referring to a location, hence no longer made sense.) This worked flawlessly, and we got all the link juice, and the new site ranked just as good as the old one. Aprox four months ago, we made some changes to the site, where we amongst other things, changed the title description on the frontpage, focusing more on another keyword – and doing this we unknowingly change the permalink to the frontpage (in WordPress). I have read that this can do some real damage, however its so long ago, that it seems unlikely to be the cause!? Please help!? Thanks a million, in advance. Cheers, Christian pJp4Uyx

How to rank a transactional query
I have a webpage about bike tours in France with a list of bike tours in France. I imagaine people don't want a big paragraph about what a bike tour in France is because this is a transactional query and not an informational query. How do I go about ranking this page ? Would a good title tag and good description be enough to rank that page ? Thank you,

Search engine keyword rank - easiest way to check the keywords that rank across website
What is the best keyword ranking tool you have used? I have used various tools by which I am expected to identify and input the keyword I want to track... However, recently I was introduced to Searchmetrics, which I think automatically pulls in the keywords a website ranks for, without the need for manual input from the SEO (I haven't used this tool yet, so apologies if I am incorrect!). Do any other rank trackers work like this? Thanks, Luke

Website Suddenly dropping rank
Morning Moz Fans: My URL is: http://goo.gl/Dhbjwj According to MOZ, which we are tracking this URL with, somewhere between the 3rd Feb and 10th the domain went from being fairly well indexed to being dropped to pages further back than 6-7, for pretty much everything, even the company name was only registering at the bottom of page one. Around this time we were transferring the website from .php into wordpress, so we were creating new pages, called by the same names and all the same content but we created the wordpress area in a sub domain of the website. Again around this time we had an issue with the blog area and had to take it down for 4-5 weeks due to some errors which meant google wouldn't have been able to crawl these pages properly, but the rest of the website was up and running. We also discovered recently that the company have and use this domain http://goo.gl/5JvDUH So my question is, what do you think caused the problem? has it been premaritally penalised? is there a way I can get google to specifically look at it and is there any more i can do?Thank you for your help

What is better for web ranking? A domain or subdomain?
I realise that often it is better put content in a subfolder rather than a subdomain, but I have another question that I cannot seem to find the answer to. Is there any ranking benefit to having a site on a .co.uk or .com domain rather than on a subdomain? I'm guessing that the subdomain might benefit from other content on the domain it's hosted on, but are subdomains weighted down in any way in the search results?

Homepage ranks worse than subpages
My homepage (www.mach7t.com) is optimized for "enterprise imaging solutions", but only ranks #55 in Google. The rest of my subpages rank much better than that for their respective keywords, many on page 1. Any ideas why this might be?

Stability in the rankings - Domain mapping
Tues domain mapping of multiple (more than 180) urls to a single address can harm rankeamento these urls? I have the following scenario… Mapping domain addresses: www.meusitecidade01.com www.meusitecidade02.com www.meusitecidade03.com ... www.meusitecidade181.com to: www.meusite.com where I have a index.php page which will assemble according to the url mapped. This could be hurting my SEO in any way? There has been a lot of stability in the rankings (not google dance) some of these urls for some keywords and unique pecularidade see that, relative to other site, is the above scenario.
