Nofollow images to sculpt internal anchor tags
-
One of my client tags image-links with nofollow if those links are before a regular HTML link in the source code, e.g.:
.
.
.
Check our page aboutreally cool shoes. They do this to "better pass anchor tags" to the page /page-about-shoes.html.
My question: Is this a good practice to do?
Thanks

Hi Sebes,
Good question. There's a lot of outdated information around the "only the first anchor text" count rules. In general, this is to believed true for text links. A couple years back a smart SEO specifically tested if the rule holds true when the first link is an image alt, and he found that the rule did not apply to images when the image was the first link. Unfortunately, this was quite awhile ago and I can no longer find the research.
To my knowledge, it's high time for another experiment in this area, so I wouldn't say for certain whether this rule is true today or not.
What I can say is that anchor text sculpting using the technique you described probably doesn't help much. In fact, by making the image link followed, you have the opportunity to vary your anchor text to your target page (if indeed Google does count both anchors when the first is an image).
Like I said, we need more experimentation. But I would wager your clients traffic and rankings will not drop if they make those links followed.
Keep us posted!

This "practices" does not work. There were several experiments published, that lead to this conclusion.
Google always takes the first alt / anchor text, no matter if it is nofollow / dofollow.
A workaround is to switch the positions in the source code. (first the textlink and than the imagelink). In most cases this is possible (css -> float) without changing the "optical" order on the page.

Are you saying there's an image "alt" tag, but no src="something.jpg" ? That is a the darkest shade of gray if not completely black hat. I would definitely avoid it. This is a classic, simple, easy to detect case of over optimization, whatever else you may want to call it.
I would strongly suggest not to do it. We are in 2012. This might have worked in 1997 when Google was just born and it was primarily Dogpile.com and Altavista.com
Get them cleaned.

I really want to answer this question but I don't actually have any proof either way.
I am however fairly confident that it's total junk.

How to find all broken images?
Are there any free tools that will crawl a full website and report back on any broken tags? My site recently added several thousand previously archived posts, many of which contain old tags that no longer exist. ScreamingFrog's crawl is too limited to reach most of these posts, and I haven't been able to find another free tool to get the job done. If there's no free tool, does anyone know of an affordable paid alternative?

Title and Heading Tags
Firstly I would like to comment on how helpful this site is. I haven't posted much before but have been reading tonnes of answers for many months now and have been finding it really useful. I used the SEOmoz scanner and the main problem highlighted was duplicate content so I started to add 'customer product reviews' I had received and unique 'further information' to each page (hopefully this was the right thing to do to solve duplicate content! : ) ) Then I looked at heading and title tags. Currently I set title tags for each product page to be "Brand Name- Product Name" but after doing some research we are thinking of putting Keyword Description of Product | Product Name | Brand Name (around 60 characters long). So is this the advised thing to do and create unique titles that are relevant to each specific product page for over 200 pages we have? In addition, any advice on setting optimum tags would be great. We keep reading varying tips online. I gather ideally h1 needs to be a shorter keyword rich version of the title tag? Many Thanks

Anchor Texts on Internal Links on my Site Question
[Hey folks, Anchor text question for internal links on my site. We all know that proper anchor text is important for rankings, both in links pointing to your site and links on your site. Google webmaster tools is showing my top internal anchor text links to be letters. This is because of navigation on the site which is in a global footer on hundreds of thousands of pages. Do you think that this dilutes or minimizes the relevance of the real anchor texts that we are targeting which trail behind these, or if this went away it would have no effect on the rest of the anchor texts on the site. How would you handle this, we can just get rid of this navigation because it's passing PR and helping the pages get spidered. Thanks in advance. How would you optimize thousands of images?
The majority of our images are not optimized for search. Specifically, the alt text and image title are blank. The image filenames are also not using descriptive keywords. We publish content quite frequently and this issue will be addressed within the production work flow for all images moving forward. As for the images currently existing on our site, what are some ways to scale the optimization for thousands of images that need to be optimized for alt text, title and filename? We're thinking about mechanical turk, but the problem is that we are a business magazine and have a lot of head shots of entrepreneurs that the mainstream might not recognize. Any insights would be appreciated.

Best Way To Host Images For Image Optimization
I need an image optimization expert to tell me whether or not we are hosting images properly for SEO. Currently, we upload all images to Picasa and then call them out with a webpart in our content management system. See example here - http://www.tennisnow.com/Photos/2011-BNP-Paribas-Open-Day-5.aspx Here's an example of the url that is attached to each image - http://lh5.ggpht.com/_1Oyc-Zgkrpk/TX5H-Pfyd7I/AAAAAAAARbc/nG3Cw-G5tsY/s400/1215548409_FU9xA-L.jpg We have a lot of images, and we've hosted them on Picasa for speed purposes based on a recommendation from our developer (makes the pages load faster). I've read that Google can now factor page load time into its ranking parameters. We are not seeing the images from each photo gallery being indexed on images.google.com. We are torn. What should we do to rank for these images?
