Facebook Likes, What are your thoughts on people begging for them?
-
Hi There,
I'm seeing more and more businesses (especially small businesses) setting up Facebook pages and then almost begging people to like them with lines such as "lets see if we can get to 200 likes", etc etc.
What are your thoughts on this does it really help and do you think Google will find a way to not count them as spammy?

I think that if you can't naturally get likes and have to ask for them, then there's bigger business issues to address. But given that they can't make a value proposition as to why I should like their page, I don't expect these people to be smart marketers.

I don't like to see people asking for likes, it does sound kind of desperate. There are also lots of groups on Facebook where people help each other out by liking each others pages. In fact, I think there are even groups on linked in geared around getting people to like each other.
On balance, most of the people I have spoken to don't like to be asked for likes. The want to like a page because they like a page.
As far as I understand it, likes, plus ones etc don't really count for a great deal in social signals. Shares, retweets are believed to carry more weight.
I've attached a link to an interesting article on social signals, breaking them down into post, comment, vote (like, +1), reshare and bookmark.

Hopefully this will give some food for thought. I think we need to keep a close eye on social signals.
I will say though, that I pulled off an interesting report on a client the other day and found a site with low DA and PA but had been +1'd a few times (and liked) and it was surprising higher up the rankings than sites with far higher DA and PA and better on page reports (A's and B's)

"What are your thoughts on this does it really help and do you think Google will find a way to not count them as spammy?"
This really is not "spammy" possibly not the best marketing tactic, but hard to call it spammy, as this person most likely only has a base of friends and family anyway. So it is well within the "community" basis Facebook rules are based in.
But I do agree, that this is not a tactic as what "value" is this business providing by posting this to users - What is the reason they want to get to 200 likes, and how can they tie that to a campaign would be a way I would look at it.

Facebook Name Change and Effect on SEO
Hey Mozzers! Trying this one again as my timing was probably pretty bad with Easter. Working with a company who has about 20K followers on Facebook and about 500 backlinks to their current facebook page. They want to change the name of the page to better reflect the business. I need to advise on this but I'm not sure of and how it will effect them. Any one had any experience in this area?

Best option for Facebook Page/Usernames?
Hey guys My first post here! currently trialling seomoz and impressed so far 🙂 My question relates to a choice of Facebook page/username for a client whose preference is to refer to their online business name by the domain name, where this business name includes his two most important keywords. So as an example: firstsecondthird.co.uk Now in terms of seo that's fine as search engines factor in keywords in the domain name, and even referring to domain name in website copy does not seem to pose too many issues. However on Facebook I've noticed that if we go with page name of: FirstSecondThird (obsiously we can't add .co.uk - I've used camel case for readability) then when using the facebook search the page does NOT get listed for any of the keywords as it appears it only matches on whole strings. So I'm going to recommend that he changes Faceook page name to First Second Third (with spaces) even though client does not really like this option. Do you guys think that makes sense? Also if I do make that change should I also go with fixed Username of First-Second-Third i.e. with hyphens or stick with one long string i.e. FirstSecondThird, which matches the domain name? Any advice appreciated. PS hope this is under right topic- several others seemed applicable Thanks

Facebook Account Architectures (Pages, Groups, etc)
I'm looking for help with how to setup/manage a community on Facebook. Here is the scenario: You have a bike store owner. Out of the store he also organizes different biking training groups, for people who want to be able to meet certain personal goals. These groups like to interact with the other members inside their groups, but not across groups. Does the following architecture make sense? The business would have 1 Company Page. Then for for various different training groups, the company admin would create Facebook 'Groups' which allow for interaction amongst members that way. Does that make sense? Or is there a smarter way to do this? It seems like this isn't very unified, because there could be a bunch of different groups. Is there a way to set this up inside the business' page itself? Any other thoughts?

Facebook Page Options
I know that facebook allows you to change your personal profile to a page. But now they have something else and I don't know what it is. It's another option that might be better than a page. This is for a company. Anyone know what I'm looking for? Thanks!
