Narrowing keywords or build more pages - Startup
-
I provide local services to a number of small cities and am trying to decide the best way to attack local keywords. I need to decide if I should target all 4 cities or narrow it down to 1 or 2. I used the google keyword tool and none of my keywords have enough results to show data so I am left guessing by using the nearest major city and population sizes.
Anyway, I have read over and over about how keywords in the title / description are imperative. Well, thats tough to accomplish without being spammy when you offer two services for four cities. I don't think lakeville snow removal, apple valley snow removal, eagan snow removal makes for a good title of a page. Also, it's not an easy task to get any kind of keyword density in the content as well. So how do you recommend I attack this?
I have seen sites that create a page for each keyword with basically the same content excpet replacing city x with city y and they do well. I find this spammy and hope that eventually they get penalized for it. I guess I would be willing to do it, but would prefer a more natural solution.
One more question, if I do keyword a single city, say Lakeville, what is the prefered way to keyword the home page compared to the service pages. Example, I have a snow removal page that the keywords would be lakeville snow removal and a lawn care page with the same.. So what is the target for the home page?
Here is the results of my keyword research.
** Monthy Google Searches** Minneapolis lawn care - 880 Minneapolis lawn service - 590 Minneapolis lawn mowing - 260
Minneapolis Snow Removal - 590 Minneapolis Snow Plowing - 320 Minneapolis Snow Removal services - 58
Service Area Data (Minni has Pop of 385K)
Lakeville - Pop;56K Income;86K Apple Valley - Pop;49K Income;74K Burnsville - Pop;60K Income;60K Eagan - Pop;64K Income;74K Northfield - Pop;20K Income;62K

This is the point where SEO becomes as much art-form as science. Creative implementation is the challenge you're talking about and there is no single "right" answer.
I can tell you that in some niche's and some cities I have seen sites that go the spammy route penalized over time, though yes, it is still possible to get away with it in some situations. personally I don't encourage it because all that effort could not only be lost overnight, but recovery could then be more challenging afterward.
Single Town approach:
Minneapolis lawn care - 880 Minneapolis lawn service - 590 Minneapolis lawn mowing - 260
Page Title: Minneapolis Lawn Care | Lawn Service Minneapolis
H1 tag: Minneapolis Lawn Care & Mowing Service
("Minneapolis lawn mowing" being the third phrase you'd want to integrate)
Minneapolis Snow Removal - 590 Minneapolis Snow Plowing - 320 Minneapolis Snow Removal services - 58
Page Title: Snow Removal Services Minneapolis | Snow Plowing
H1 tag: Minneapolis Snow Removal & Plowing Services
Multi-town approach:
This is more challenging given the ability to only go so far to integrate phrase variations. Just one consideration might be:
Page Title: Minneapolis Lawn Care | Lawn Service | Lakeville | Apple Valley
H1: Lawn Care & Mowing Service covering Minneapolis, Lakeville, Apple Valley & surrounding areasPage Title: Snow Removal Minneapolis | Snow Plowing | Lakeville | Apple Valley
H1: Snow Removal & Plowing covering Minneapolis, Lakeville, Apple Valley & surrounding areas
In both of these examples, I ensured to keep the Page Title within reasonable length for viewing in Google results, opting to cut out a 2nd tier word in exchange for additional town references.
NOTE: I would not attempt to optimize more than that on any single page - that's the upper limit because it could get stupid, dilute SEO, and annoy prospective readers.

Competing Pages for Ranking Keywords?
Hey there, My client has this existing page which ranks for rentals-related keywords that are product type specific - i.e. electric wheelchair rentals, mobility scooter rentals, etc. https://mobilityequipmentforless.com/pages/rentals I recently made a rentals page for each product type to try and really target those keywords that the rentals page is ranking for. Is this a problem? Is the potential nature of the pages competing for the keywords a real issue? Any help is appreciated. Thanks! Mike

Does Google do keyword matching when deciding whether to rank a page?
Hi, another newbie question on keyword research and selection (can't find any information on-line with this low level of detail)... If I've decided that my primary keyword for a given product page is the product name, something like 'AquaPower wet and dry cordless vacuum cleaner', can I assume that it isn't worth additionally optimising the page for 'cordless vacuum' as this has a phrase match in the primary keyword? Is it still worth additionally optimising for 'wet and dray vacuum' which has a broad match within the primary keyword or is Google bright enough to drop the intervening word 'cordless' when deciding whether to rank my page? Thanks for any guidance on this.

Does Anchor Text in Links Count When Google Looks at Overall Keywords on the Page?
So, on our site, we have a list of related blog posts on a page that focuses on bamboo flooring. These blogs posts have anchor text like "What's the best bamboo flooring?" "How to install bamboo flooring." "Yada yada bamboo flooring yada." Because the main keyword for the page is bamboo flooring, would the presence of these words within anchor text on the page be considered as keywords on the bamboo flooring page, affecting that page and possibly stuffing within that page?

Tag usage based on Google keywords
We are making a site that will be a database of publicity stunts. We used the Google Keyword tool to find a bunch of words related to this. The term itself has similar keywords such as [pr campaigns]. And also there are some derivative keywords as [bad publicity stunts], [famous publicity stunts], [celebrity publicity stunts]. Each bringing in 20-50 monthly searches for the exact term. Some concepts appear slightly differently such as [famous pr stunts] and [famous pr campaigns]. We'd love our pages to appear on as much of these keyword searches as possible (overall we expect about 3k-4k searches /month on exact matching). And we're planning to use these keywords as a our taxonomy for our post tags. That way the keyword appears in each stunt page AND there is a page for each type of publicity stunt. As a general policy, what would be the best way to write our tags?

Ranking Reports for New Keywords
I added new keywords to my campaign. They do appear in my ranking report. But I am not getting any ranking data on the new keywords. It looks like they are yet to be crawled. For my initial set of keywords, i see the specific rankings in each search engine and for some it says "not in the top 50." For the new ones all I see are zeros. Will the ranking data eventually appear?
