Is my competitor up to no good? Strange site-explorer results.
-
I'm researching a competitor using site explorer and the seomoz toolbar and getting some strange results.
When you search by the domain name in site explorer you get no results, but the toolbar shows 170K incoming links.
http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site=www.augustagreenlawns.com
I noticed the top referring page was a strange internal url so I ran that through site explorer and discovered 19 links.. When you put the strange link in a browser, it redirects to the home url;.. At this url the toolbar shows 220 links and semoz shows 19

What is up with that url? What are they doing? This is a site ranking #1 for my local search term even though he has about 50 pages of almost duplicate content. See link below. I'm really scratching my head here.

Derek,
PS you would get a much better rank and the site would look sharper if you swapped out YouTube for http://wistia.com/
videos they have S EO site map and you get 5 for free for life.
All the best,
Tom

hi Derek,
sorry about that I really didn't mean to be sarcastic I honestly read it in the top left corner and then him half asleep so I apologize. I realize now you categorized under white hat black hat not under your profile as I have seen in the past from people sorry again.
If you are no what your competitors are up to check out compete.com
I think Spider mate, rave tools, SEM rush along with spyfluw
will keep you up to date on their shenanigans.
Sorry about that man I didn't mean to be a jerk.
All the best,
Tom

I would do a http://www.alexa.com/siteaudit
Then get your site on a more SEO friendly framework like WordPress
I wanted to show you what just what SEMRush was showing me as far as back links and where you rank. For the keywords given.
Get rid of ?all=categories
I hate to ask but the white hat/black hat is that a joke or is that really how you practice it if so that is how the rank might look all over the USA
Alexa shows better keywords http://www.alexa.com/site/linksin/augustagreenlawns.com
Your site has not been hacked http://sitecheck.sucuri.net/results/www.augustagreenlawns.com/
please look at your links in the URL as you have no sitemap.xml
All the Best,
Tom

Here are the links in the site footer. Missed them: Site Map | All Cities
They've obviously optimized a page for each service in each town.
I am not seeing them show up #1 for various services within towns but I'm in Maine so not sure what affect that has on local search.
-
Looks like the "?all=categories" forces a different display in the content region of the page. The default homepage does not include this information as you noted.
"?all=categories" is basically a landing page that drives the google bot to town-specific pages dedicated to their services. If you note the copy they've customized each page to drive local SEO to the specific town.
Don't forget to log out of Google or use an alternative browser that you never log into to see anonymous results for your search. I sometimes have to remind myself of that.
There sitemap.php file is empty so not sure how that ?all=categories" link is getting indexed as I can't find it in the navigation either.
Competitor kind enough to share keywords he's trying to optimize for:
<meta name="<a class="attribute-value">keywords</a>" content=" <a class="attribute-value">Snow Removal, Sanding Services, Roof Raking Services, Fall Cleanup, Lawn Mowing Service, Fertilization Services, Dethatching Services, Tree and Shrub Care Services,</a>" />

Traffic going down in all sites in a niche
Hello, A client has three Ecommerce sites in a niche. Because of competition and a (possibly) non manual penalty due to doorways and paid links (though I think it's mainly competition too) our traffic is going down. What are the keys to increasing traffic at this point. Feel free to include tricks that cost money. A Hrefs (I love Moz though!) has some neat content tricks. Please give me the best tricks in the industry to increase traffic. We're adding content to the main site of the three and maybe that's what to focus on, but we're having trouble driving serious traffic with the content. We need serious traffic. We are experts in our field and capable of almost anything as far as information goes in our field. Thanks.

Somebody took an article from my site and posted it on there own site but gave it credit back to my site is this duplicate content?
Hey guys, This question may sound a bit drunk, but someone copied our article and re-posted it on their site the exact article, however the article was credited to our site and the original author of the article had approved the other site could do this. We created the article first though, Will this still be regarded as duplicate content? The owner of the other site has told us it wasn't because they credited it. Any advice would be awesome Thanks

How should I use the 2nd link if a site allows 2 in the body of a guest post?
I've been doing some guest posting, and some sites allow one link, others allow more. I'm worried I might be getting too many guest posts with multiple links. I'd appreciate your thoughts on the following: 1. If there are 50+ guest posts going to my website (posted over the span of several months), each with 2 links pointing back only to my site is that too much of a pattern? How would you use the 2nd link in a guest post if not to link to your own site? 2. Does linking to .edu or .gov in the guest post make the post more valuable in terms of SEO? Some people recommend using the 2nd link to do this. Thanks!

Google is giving one of my competitors a quasi page 1 monopoly, how can I complain?
Hi, When you search for "business plan software" on google.co.uk, 7 of the 11 first results are results from 1 company selling 2 products, see below: #1. Government site (related to "business plan" but not to "business plan software")
White Hat / Black Hat SEO | | tbps
#2. Product 1 from Palo Alto Software (livePlan)
#3. bplan.co.uk: content site of Palo Alto Software (relevant to "business plan" but only relevant to "business plan software" because it is featuring and linking to their Product 1 and Product 2 sites)
#4. Same site as #3 but different url
#5. Palo Alto Software Product 2 (Business Plan Pro) page on Palo Alto Software .co.uk corporate site
#6. Same result as #5 but different url (the features page)
#7. Palo Alto Software Product 2 (Business Plan Pro) local site
#8, #9 and #10 are ok
#11. Same as #3 but the .com version instead of the .co.uk This seems wrong to me as it creates an illusion of choice for the customer (especially because they use different sites) whereas in reality the results are showcasing only 2 products. Only 1 of Palo Alto Software's competitors is present on page 1 of the search results (the rest of them are on page 2 and page 3). Did some of you experience a similar issue in a different sector? What would be the best way to point it out to Google? Thanks in advance Guillaume0 -
Why is this site not being punished!?
I guess this is the usual reaction to a seeing a domain rank above your own website is "They must be cheating"! However... in this case I feel more than justified. The website is aircon247.com they rank top 3 in the UK for "air conditioning" and other quite generic terms in the industry. I'm interested to know your thoughts and what (if any) action should be taken. Technorati links. good? or bad?
Hi all After an unnatural link warning I am about to do my third reconsideration request after having my previous two turned down. I have manually removed hundreds of spammy links (thousands if you include sitewide) and used the disavow tool on hundreds more where I could not get them manually removed. The backlinks I have remaining now all seem to be genuine. There are quite a few backlinks from technorati, I thought these were ligitimet links but am now thinking should I remove/disavow them. Does anybody have any opinions?

Good link networks?
Hey Mozzers, quick question about link networks. I've identified quite a few, like these: Build My Rank Unique Article Wizard Authority Link Network Article Ranks EZ Article Link Socialadr Linkvana SEO LinkVine Does anyone have experience using any of these? The basic premise is they own or their members own tons of different blogs. You write an article, give it to them, they publish it one one of those blogs. You include a link in your article. Done. They charge a monthly fee to use and all that, so is it worth it? Anyone had any success with them? Finding mixed things on forums online, and since many of their websites like awfully spammy, wanted to poll the Mozzers and get your thoughts.
