On Jan 28 - 2013 google dropped many of our keywords from its index. Here is the history of Rank
June 24 2012 - RANK 2 Nov 18 2012 - RANK 8 NOV 25 2012 - RANK 15 JAN 6 2013 - RANK 10 JAN 13 2013 - RANK 21 JAN 20 2013 - RANK 9 Jan 27 2013 - RANK 6 JAN 28 2013 - DROPS OUT OF GOOGLE

The ON PAGE is an A for the homepage, errors and warnings are all DOWN over time.
Would the last Google Update have caused this?
Bing and Yahoo went UP and google dropped right out

The red box is the keyword in question, but many others dropped out of top 50
Anyone have any ideas on what I should look for or which update could be responsible?

Seems like it could definitely be over-optimization then. That doesn't seem like a natural link profile at all. See if you can get rid of some of the lower quality links, and focus on getting high quality links with varied anchor text.
-
The page is the homepage which was hard coded to be a subdirectory years ago
That home URL has 9000 links to it
Summary 1st
ALT TEXT
There are 3295 cells with 1 or more instaces of "hydroponic" in 7000 links
lots of which are spammy directoriesPAGE TITLE TEXT
There are 1560 pages with "hydroponic" included in the PAGE title of a link
TARGET URL - 5000 or more of the links goto the homepage
-
Is that number of links to a specific page, or total number of links? What is the ratio of anchor text links vs non-anchor text links for the specific page you are trying to rank for? And where are those links coming from?
-
for hydroponics
36 Linking Root Domains Containing Anchor Text 153 Links Containing This Anchor Text
That doesnt seem like a lot
hydroponic only 10 and 59
Totals are
413 Linking Root domains
10,000 linksBut of the top 50 keyphrases this is #1 more or less / 50
and then almost all the other links HAVE those two words in the phrase
90% of the links that are not the company name such as
hydroponic flowers
hydroponic gardeningetc
-
Sounds like it could be over optimization then. Take a look at the backlinks for that page, and see if 60% or more are using your keyword as the anchor text. If you've built any low quality links see if you can remove or disavow them.

Hi Takeshi
No we don't buy or sell link.s
Tons of low quality links - over time its possible there are about 1500 root linking domains some are good some are just directories and stuff like that. Exact match no. It's a single word in this case "hydroponics". Google is indexing the site fine, and all other keywords were left in the index, only the general keyterms
hydroponic
hydroponicsThese two just vanished, things I can think of are over optimization for this word? It ranked top 10 for years then BOOM gone. The title and meta didn't change for 2 years or more.
Its not a normal drop, they DEINDEXED those 2 keywords specifically not drop from 10 to 20 , just de-indexed those 2 keyterms

The drop in rankings don't seem to correspond to any named Google updates (Panda/Penguin), but Google is constantly tweaking their algorithm and rankings for sites fluctuate all the time.
It's impossible to tell what happened to your site, without knowing more about what happened. Have you purchased or sold links? Have you built tons of low quality links with exact-match anchor text? Did you make any technical changes to your site that may have caused indexation problems? Did you lose any high value links? Etc. There are countless reasons why sites drop in rankings, including just random fluctuations of Google.

Strange Google SERP Layout: Anyone?
I haven't been able to repeat this, but I just saw a strange Google SERP layout. The screenshot is attached below. Has anyone else seen something like this? I kind of rubbed my eyes and wondered 'if it was kicking in'. ca2JqaP

Did Google update the length of characters allowed in Meta Description?
Hey all, I do SEO. I'm currently working with another SEO firm on a project. The lady mentioned to me that Google recently updated (couple months ago) and changed their font causing them to lower the meta description to 55 characters. Is this true? I have not heard of this. Could she be confusing the meta description with the title tag? I didn't know Google could have even update the Title tag too.

Google Dropped 3,000+ Pages due to 301 Moved !! Freaking Out !!
We may be the only people stupid enough to accidentally prevent the google bot from indexing our site. In our htaccess file someone recently wrote the following statement RewriteEngine On
Algorithm Updates | | David_C
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^mysite.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.mysite.com/$1 [L,R=301] Its almost funny because it was a rewrite that rewrites back to itself... We found in webmaster tools that the site was not able to be indexed by the google bot due to not detecting the robots.txt file. We didn't have one before as we didn't really have much that needed to be excluded. However we have added one now for kicks really. The robots.txt file though was never the problem with regard to the bot accessing the site. Rather it was the rewrite statement above that was blocking it. We tested the site not knowing what the deal was so we went under webmaster tools then health and then selected "Fetch as Google" to have the website. This was our way of manually requesting the site be re-indexed so we could see what was happening. After doing so we clicked on status and it provided the following: HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently
Content-Length: 250
Content-Type: text/html
Location: http://www.mystie.com/
Server: Microsoft-IIS/7.5
MicrosoftOfficeWebServer: 5.0_Pub

Connection: close <title>301 Moved Permanently</title> Moved Permanently The document has moved here. We changed the screwed up rewrite mistake in the htaccess file that found its way in there but now our issue is that all of our pages have been severely penalized with regard to where they are now ranking compared to just before the indecent. We are essentially freaking out because we don't know the real time consequences of this and if or how long it will take for the certain pages to regain their prior ranks. Typical pages when down anywhere between 9-40 positions on high volume search terms. So to say the least our company is already discussing the possibilities of fairly large layoffs based on what we anticipate with regard to the drop in traffic. This sucks because this is peoples lives but then again a business must make money and if you sell less you have to cut the overhead and the easiest one is payroll. I'm on a team with three other people that I work with to keep the SEO side up to snuff as much as we can and we sell high ticket items so the potential effects if Google doesn't restore matters could be significant. My question is what would you guys do? Is there any way we can contact Google about such a matter? If you can I've never seen such a thing. I'm sure the pages that are missing from the index now might make their way back in but what will there rank look like next time and with that type of rewrite has it permanently effected every page site wide, including those that are still in the index but severely effected by the index. Would love to see things bounce back quick but I don't know what to expect and neither do my counterparts. Thanks for any speculation, suggestions or insights of any kind!!!0 -
Will signing up for Google Places affect my national rankings
OK, Here is a question which I can't find but think people have thought about. I would like to know others opinion. I have had a site that ranks well under generic national keyword terms. (not geographically specific) Its a small website, only 10 pages. We get 85% of our business from online applications. These applications come from all over the united states. Our SERP rankings generate 70% of all our traffic. My question is this: we operate in a state where we don't do business. We are a virtual business. Should I sign up for google places? Will It hurt my national SERP rankings?

When did the New Google Algorithm Come into Force in the UK
On March 3rd, the hits on my UK site crashed to 40% of the previous number. I am guessing it may be down to the google algorithm change:- http://wisestartupblog.com/seo/google-algorithm-change-february-2011-losers-winners/5081 However, I am aware this happened on 25th Feb in the US. Do you know when it happened in the UK. Could it have suddenly started affecting me on March 3?
