We were penalized for a specific key phrase due to incoming links. How long to come back?
-
We were penalized for a specific key phrase, I had included a link using that phrase to the targeted page in a header on another site. This resulted in hundreds of identical lincoming links using that key phrase to the page, so I'm guessing that's what did it. I've since rectified the problem but about how long do you think it will take for the penalty to be dropped? We were knocked down about 10 places.
-
Well this penalty actually occurred back in February and I think we did add a paragraph or two of descriptive text at the time which may have been slightly over optimized but has also been fixed. The specific page is "http://www.absoluteautomation.com/driveway-alarm.html" <-- it's been penalized for the phrase "driveway alarm" it's still doing alright for driveway alarms, driveway sensors, etc.

It definitely doesn't hurt to completely remove the links from their site if you suspect that it could be hurting you. it's the exact anchor text in the links? Is the site that the links are on penalized?
Did you do any on page content changes recently?
-
Darn, thanks. I thought for sure that had been the problem, all other keywords were unaffected, but there was that 10 position drop on one specific key phrase. I thought that must have been it.
-
I agree that this is not your problem or a penalty.
Sitewides are discounted by Google anyway and one site is not enough to get you penalized. If you get penalized you will also be kicked back further, usually to the 3rd page or 5th page or sometimes completely off the map. Always avoid sitewide links though. Ask them to make it a homepage only link if possible.
Look somewhere else for your rank slipping problem

Was this link in the header of only one website? If yes then I think it's very unlikely you've been penalized for one site wide link, or else it would be far too easy to get your competitors penalized. It's more likely that you're been bumped down from one of the recent Google updates in which case you will need to work to get your rankings back.

Sitewide links
Hi there, We operate about a dozen websites that are part of the same parent company. All these websites are in the same vertical, and link among each other in the footer section. The anchor for each link is the brand name, so we are merely doing it to show what other products the parent company has to offer. My question is: do you think this is still advisable, or it might trigger a penalty? Also, what would you choose between: Sitewide footer links from each site to the other sites. A single footer link on the homepage from each site to the other sites. A presentation page on each website, one click away from the homepage, which presents the company's other websites. Thanks.

To Fix An Incoming Link Or Not?
I recently received a unnatural link notice from Google. The thing is, I haven't done any link building in the last two years. So, I looked at my latest links report within Google Webmaster Tools and see where one of our dealer's website has been updated recently and now includes a site-wide link to us. Site note: My brand name as the anchor text ... no keywords nearby. I think this is what may be causing the problem because nothing else within the report really jumps out at me. Also, it lines up with the timeline. It looks like they changed their site to include the link at the beginning of April. Google was noticing the links throughout April and to the present. I got the notice May 19th. Now, I have a good relationship with this dealer and can have him change anything I want at the drop of a hat. The question is, by having him change it am I admitting to Google wrongdoing and thus hurting myself by inviting further scrutiny. Should I leave it as is since it truly is a legitimate link? Google having false positives like this really muddies the water. Thanks guys!

Link building during link removal
We were advised by out outsourced link removal vendor not to build any links while they are removing links pointing to our site. I am worried that our site will lose significant traffic if we dont build any new links while waiting for them to remove links that caused our site to be penalized. What are your thoughts?

Are the following considered bad links for Link Building.
I've been doing a lot of research lately on link building & I've read a lot about having a diverse amount of links. Social links, Blog links, comment links, footer links, No follow links, Directory links as well as links with Anchor text URL match, brand match, partial brand match, non-descriptive, and with keywords. But there is a lot of talk of removing those links that look like a site that's built just for link building purposes.... but Directories are basically built for link building are they not? I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if they feel links from the following directories would be bad links. (Non-Paid) http://www.yoganza.com http://www.wkool.com http://www.wee-directory.com http://www.voicelet.com www.hotfrog.ca http://www.webdirectorieslist.com http://multiplelistingboard.com http://mozdirectory.net http://freedirectorypr.info Industry specific below: http://bestautolinks .com http://automotivedome.com http://automobilebuzz.com http://craigsautolinks.com Thanks so much for the help!
