Why Is This Page Not Ranking?
-
Hi Mozzers,
I can't rank (the page is nowhere on the Google grid that I can find) and I've not been able to move the needle at all on it.
The page is http://www.lumber2.com/Western-Saddle-Pads-s/98.htm for keyword "western saddle pads."
I'm inclined to think I'm cannabalizing the category with the products so I removed the word saddle from the majority of the product names on page.
However, saddle pad or saddle pads is in the meta title for most if not all of the products.
Do you think I'm cannabalizing with the product titles or is there something else going on?
Thanks for any help.

No problem happy to help

Thanks everyone for taking the time to dig in the page and give me some actionable feedback.
I appreciate it!

In my opinion, your page is over-optimized for your primary keyword. I would look into some variant keywords you can optimize this page for. Here is what I see as "Over-Optimized" for that exact keyword:
Page Title = OK, could use some customization
Description = OK
Breadcrumbs = Exact Keyword along with the Exact Title Tag (Sort of okay, I'd say)
H1 Tag = Exact Keyword. As well as a Title Tag to your H1 Tag ? That's too much. That's clearly there for SEO and SEO Only.In that 1 paragraph of copy, you have the same keyword in Bold, twice. The image with a good filename and alt tag is okay.
What I'd look into is, what are some other long tail keywords that you can optimize your page for. That would help you in 2 ways.
1. Remove the Over-Optimization
2. Help you rank for that low(er) hanging fruit.Unrelated to this keyword/page, but overall:
You don't need the following tags on every single page:
I hope this helps.

Thanks Mike. I'm looking into the issue on our forums at Convergent 7.
I don't want you to go out of your way. Just thought I'd ask in case you knew off-hand.
I don't have the developer/tech acumen.

ill do some research on it for you
-
Thank you Mike.
I follow you on everything except the tables. I'm assuming our CMS eCommerce software generates these tables automatically (Volusion).
Is there any way to strip those tables or will that foul the page displays across the site?
-
Greetings,
A couple of items at first glance
1. The URL structure looks awkward not sure what the "98" or "-s" is
If i were to do this it would be something like
lumber2.com/western-saddle-pads/leather-sadles.html
Ok so here is what i see
**Here is your site **
and this is your number 1 ranking competitor
get rid of the tables and you probably could rank.
Here is your site on Opensiteexplorer
http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site=www.lumber2.com
Here is ChickSaddlery on opensiteexplorer
http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site=www.chicksaddlery.com%2Fpage%2FCDS%2FCTGY%2F1060
and almost everyone of their links are internal links which speaks volumes.
so honestly you could move the needle in these 2 ways:
1. Improve internal linking strucutre
2. 10 - 20 solid organic links with relevent sites -
Do you know your current position in google if you search "Western Saddle Pads"? If yes, did you track your progress?
Also, depending your competition, your pagerank might not be high enough? (2/10 on the home page is below average)
The page itself looks ok, it's probably tweakings and getting quality inbound links with Western Saddle Pads as anchor text that will make a difference.

Inner pages not ranking well
Hi Guys I'm currently working on a website and scratching my head. It seems certain pages of the website rank absolutely fine. The homepage, certain pages on footer and the primary navigation pages are ranking fine. Pages, however, that sit on the inner navigation (e.g 3rd level navigational pages) - do not rank well at all. Looking in webmaster, it is apparent these are fluctuating in and out of the Google index - sometimes they are there - sometimes not. I fully understand issues with Google penalties but I don't believe this is case as other pages are ranking fine. Link building has been done to these pages but to no effect. We have also increased internal links e.g by putting the pages on the footer - but still nothing. One thing that may impact the ranking is possibly the URL structure The website URLs are all www.Example.com/widgets - even if they sit on the 3rd level of the user navigation. Could this be a reason why? Would it help if 3rd level pages had the URL structure www.Example.com/services/widgets ? If anyone can provide help that would be great!!! thanks, Duncan

2 pages ranking for the same term
Hi everyone, I have had two pages ranking on page two of Google for a while now for the same term. I have tried dedicating a page to it but as the other has a url with the search term in Google is ranking both it seems. How can I without deindexing one of the pages help better tell Google which one to rank? I imagine if it only ranked one page I would get a higher result rather than 2 weaker ones? On-site has been done and so has links to the homepage, but the innerpage still ranks also as it has the search term in its url. Would a canonical tag be worth it here? the page is however getting some traffic itself for other terms so I am reluctant to do that. Any help much appreciated.

Page Count in Webmaster Tools Index Status Versus Page Count in Webmaster Tools Sitemap
Greeting MOZ Community: I run www.nyc-officespace-leader.com, a real estate website in New York City. The page count in Google Webmaster Tools Index status for our site is 850. The page count in our Webmaster Tools Sitemap is 637. Why is there a discrepancy between the two? What does the Google Webmaster Tools Index represent? If we filed a removal request for pages we did not want indexed, will these pages still show in the Google Webmaster Tools page count despite the fact that they no longer display in search results? The number of pages displayed in our Google Webmaster Tools Index remains at about 850 despite the removal request. Before a site upgrade in June the number of URLs in the Google Webmaster Tools Index and Google Webmaster Site Map were almost the same. I am concerned that page bloat has something to do with a recent drop in ranking. Thanks everyone!! Alan

An affiliate website uses datafeeds and around 65.000 products are deleted in the new feeds. What are the best practises to do with the product pages? 404 ALL pages, 301 Redirect to the upper catagory?
Note: All product pages are on INDEX FOLLOW. Right now this is happening with the deleted productpages: 1. When a product is removed from the new datafeed the pages stay online and are showing simliar products for 3 months. The productpages are removed from the categorie pages but not from the sitemap! 2. Pages receiving more than 3 hits after the first 3 months keep on existing and also in the sitemaps. These pages are not shown in the categories. 3. Pages from deleted datafeeds that receive 2 hits or less, are getting a 301 redirect to the upper categorie for again 3 months 4. Afther the last 3 months all 301 redirects are getting a customized 404 page with similar products. Any suggestions of Comments about this structure? 🙂 Issues to think about:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Zanox
- The amount of 404 pages Google is warning about in GWT
- Right now all productpages are indexed
- Use as much value as possible in the right way from all pages
- Usability for the visitor Extra info about the near future: Beceause of the duplicate content issue with datafeeds we are going to put all product pages on NOINDEX, FOLLOW and focus only on category and subcategory pages.0 -
Google is ranking the wrong page for the targeted keyword
I have two examples below where we want it to rank for the targeted page but google picked another page to rank instead. This is happening a lot on this site I just recently started to work on. Example 1 Googles Choice for key word Motorcycle Tires: http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/cl/50/Tires-and-Wheels What we want Google to choice for Motorcycle Tires: http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/c/49/-/181/Motorcycle-Tires Other pages about Motorcycle tires: http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/d/12/Motorcycle-Tires We even used the rel="canonical" for this url to point to our target page. http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/c/50/-/181/Motorcycle-Tires Example 2 ATV Tires We want this page to rank http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/c/43/81/165/ATV-Tires however google has decided to rank http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/t/43/81/165/723/ATV-Tires-All that is acutally one folder under where we want it.

To land page or not to land page
Hey all, I wish to increase my sites rankings on a variety of keywords within sub categories but I'm unsure where to be spending the time in SEO. Here's an example of the website page structure: General Home Page > Sub Category 1 Home Page
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | DPSSeomonkey
> Searching / Results pages
- Sub Category 1
- Sub Category 2
- Sub Category 3
- Sub Category 4 > Sub Category 2 Home Page
> Searching / Results pages
- Sub Category 1
- Sub Category 2
- Sub Category 3
- Sub Category 4 We've newly introduced the Sub Category Home Pages and I was wondering if SEO is best performed on these pages or should landing pages be built, one for each of the 4 sub categories in each section. Those landing pages would have links to the "Searching / Results pages" for that sub category. Thanks!0 -
Deep Page is Ranking for Main Keyword, But I Want the Home Page to Rank
A deep page is ranking for a competitive and essential keyword, I'd like the home page to rank. The main reasons are probably: This specific page is optimized for just that keyword. Contains keyword in URL I've optimized the home page for this keyword as much as possible without sacrificing the integrity of the home page and the other keywords I need to maintain. My main question is: If I use a 301 redirect on this deep page to the home page, am I risking my current ranking, or will my home page replace it on the SERPs? Thanks so much in advance!
