Google penalty
-
Hi, I've seen a steady improvement in my google search referrals since optimising my site and keeping an eye on SEO over the last few months.
I'm only getting relatively small numbers of referrals, around 120-130 a day, but this has steadily increased from about 40 before Christmas. It's been a fairly consistent increase until 4 days ago when suddenly my referral numbers were cut in half.
I'd be surprised if google was penalising me since I'm such a small site, but are there any obvious signs I should look out for?
Oh, and my site is www.madegood.org should that be of help.
Thanks!
Will

I agree with Chris that 4 days is not enough to make any serious assumptions about what is happening.
There were no known major algorithm updates so it is unlikely that Penguin or Panda has affected you (unless Google released one and didn't tell us, but I think that's unlikely because usually when that happens there is a big spike in people complaining about loss of traffic on a particular day.)
A drop from say, 120 to 60 could be something as simple as a loss of 1 or 2 positions in the SERPS for a main keyword. And that can happen for a number of reasons. A competitor could be outperforming you. Or perhaps the algorithm just changed and favours you less.
Sometimes Google will drop a site a few places (or even a couple of pages) in the SERPS and then a few days later will boost you up higher than you once were.
I wouldn't make any major changes at this point. If it doesn't get better though then you may need some digging into your analytics done to determine where the drop is coming from.

Nice one Chris. I'll keep an eye on things.
You've been very helpful!

My last thing was:
4.) In this case four days is not enough time to make a sound judgement about whether there's a problem or not. That doesn't mean you can't or shouldn't be looking closely at what may be happening.
40K links from 300 sites though.... That may be a precarious balance. I'd say stay focused on generating social engagement while you work to build out the number of linking domains, not just the number of links.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for your response. I never did get a particular large number from a specific keyword, it seems to be across the board. My branded keywords don't seem to be sending any traffic any more ('madegood', 'madegood bikes' etc) but I suppose that could be a coincidence.
My inbound links have been increasing, including some really good ones from guardian.co.uk (x6) and inhabitat.com (x1). Webmaster Tools tells me I have 39,862 from 262 domains, and this has been increasing steadily too.
I know this sounds odd, but the drop coincides directly with enabling webmaster tools data within my analytics account. Could this be related!?
Is it possible that google might be just trying things out and it could return to normal, or do I really need to fix this?
Thanks again

Hey Will,
A couple of things:
1. Size doesn't matter when it comes to penalties--except that it might take a little longer to get caught, with an emphasis on "might".
2. Are you doing anything that you might get caught for? A three-fold increase in referrals is nice--whatcha been doin' to make that happen?
3. Have you investigated the sites referring you to see if anything has changed there? What site(s) that was referring you traffic is now referring less? If it was typical website, are the links still in place? Maybe it was penalized or dropped in rankings for some terms and they're no longer getting traffic that they can refer to you. If you mean search engine referrals, was it a specific keyword that stopped sending you traffic or was it an across the board drop and have your keyword rankings dropped? Have you lost any strong links in the recent past.
These are some of the things you want to look into as you work on figuring this out.

Google Analytics / Facebook UTM
Hello, I have a quick question. I am setting up conversion tracking for my Facebook ads, so I am giving each ad set a tracking URL (UTM) in order to see which ads are converting etc. Is it possible to see on analytics how much I am spending on these ads or a cost per conversion? Or does the tracking merely track general analytics data such as bounce rate, exit rate, revenue generated etc? Kind Regards, James

Increase in Direct traffic, drop in Google traffic, after updating Google Analytics settings.
I made some changes to our Google Analytics property settings (see notes in screenshot). As a result, there was an equal drop in Google traffic and increase in Direct traffic. Has anyone else seen something like this before? I'm wondering if I should revert. jE7buO6

Which one should I use...Google Analytics or AFS Analytics
Hi There, I am about to implement analytics for a customer site and I am wondering if I should use Google Analytics or https://www.afsanalytics.com ? I am leaning towards Google since it's pretty mainstream but I would love some feedback on the AFS ! Thanks everyone! Gary

Does Google encryption of keyword data impact SEO revenue reporting in Google analytics?
Hi there, I know Google has been encrypting SEO keyword data which they rolled out in September 2013. My question is - will this impact SEO revenue figures reported in Google analytics? I have been monitoring SEO revenue figures for a client and they are significantly down even though rankings have not lowered. Is this because of Google's encryption? Could there be another reason? Many thanks!

Why does Google dislike us so?
Hi all, Over the past 18 months one of the sites I look after, www.english-inns.co.uk, has taken a massive dip in Google rankings (as per the graph attached). To give you an idea of what the site is about, we're effectively the largest directory of inns in England and have a mixture of exclusive offers direct from member inns but also have some affiliate links thrown into the mix. In terms of steps taken to remedy our falling out of grace with Google, these have included: A complete website redesign Removal of any duplicate content 'Adding value' by including interactive maps, better search functionality, promoting exclusive offers, etc. Unfortunately none of this seems to have helped our situation and we are now sitting at some pretty horrible places in Google's SERP's. For example, even for the keyphrase "english inns" we only rank #5 and this is a term associate with our brand! Perhaps I'm missing something obvious here... can anyone see any glaring issues with the site? Any help would be most appreciated Mozzers. Cheers google-analytics.png

500 errors and impact on google rankings
Since the launch of our newly designed website about 6 months ago, we are experiencing a high number of 500 server errors (>2000). Attempts to resolve these errors have been unsuccessful to date. We have just started to notice a consistent and sustained drop in rankings despite our hard sought efforts to correct. Two questions... can very high levels of 500 errors adversely effect our google rankings? And, if this is the case, what type of specialist (what are they called) has expertise to investigate and fix this issue. I should also mention that the sitemap also goes down on a regular basis, which some have stated is due to the size of the site (>500 pages). Don't know if they're part of the same problem? Thanks.

Google Analytics - paid & unpaid visits messed up
I guess Google Analytics messes up my paid and unpaid visits. In the list of top 10 kw's sending non-paid traffic it shows 5 very short kw's that we don't rank for at all (checked with RankTracker - we are not in first 50 search results). But these are the kw's we advertise for... One more proof: Webmaster Tools 'Search queries' shows 10 times less 'Clicks' from organic search than Google Analytics. Is there anyone who is experiencing this kind of problems with GA? Is there anything you can do with it?
