Moving from a static HTML CSS site with .html files to a Wordpress Site while keeping link structure
-
Mozzers,
Hope this finds you well. I need some advice. We have a site built with a dreamweaver template, and it is lacking in responsiveness, ease of updates, and a lot of the coding is behind traditional web standards (which I know will start to hurt our rank - if not the user experience). For SEO purposes, we would like to move the existing static based site to Wordpress so we can update it easily and keep content fresh.
Our current site, thriveboston.com, has a lot of page extensions ending in .html. For the transition, it is extremely important for us to keep the link structure. We rank well in the SERPs for Boston Counseling, etc...
I found and tested a plugin (offline) that can add a .html extension to Wordpress pages, which allows us to keep our current structure, but has anyone had any luck with this live?
Has anyone had any luck moving from a static site - to a Wordpress site - while keeping the current link structure - without hurting any rank?
We hope to move soon because if the site continues to grow, it will become even harder to migrate the site over.
Also, does anyone have any hesitations? It this a bad move? Should we just stay on the current DWT template (the HTML and CSS) and not migrate?
Any suggestions and advice will be heeded.
Thanks Mozzers!

That's a little disconcerning, but having said that it has got some stellar reviews.
Furthermore, people in January this year have been saying the plugin is still working a-ok:
http://wordpress.org/support/view/plugin-reviews/html-on-pages
That's encouraging if it still works well for WP 3.5.
If you've got the time, I'd maybe a run a test on this - see if you can set up a dummy site, or use an old site you may have, and see if it works for you. Best way to test and debug any problems is always to do it yourself.

Thanks Tom!
The plugin I tested can be found in the Wordpress Plugin Directory ".html on PAGES" // I am somewhat weary of it because of the lack of updates that it has had. No updates in 2 years.

Hi there
Now, I've not used that plugin before, but I have helped to successfully migrate a legion of 8 sites to a new CMS, in the process going from .HTML to .asp keeping the rankings in tact (actually improving a little with fresh content), so hopefully I can help.
We ended up 301 redirecting the old URLs to the new ones, which worked for us. It was made a hell of a lot easier by keeping the same link structure, which I see you're planning on doing. I can't stress this enough, it helps so much if you can do this and replicate the structure.
We ended up dropping a few pages in the migration. We asked two questions of these pages - a no to both resulted in letting it return a 404, which is OK (don't be afraid of returning a few). If the page was either a) bringing in traffic at the first point of entry or b) carrying some link "juice" from external links, the page was 301 redirected to the nearest equivalent page in the new structure.
Now, none of this involves that plugin - I'd be curious to see if anyone has used it. I like the idea of it if it effectively means your URLs stay exactly the same. However, I'm just here to say that 301 redirecting has worked for me in the past. We've read recently that a 301 will pass all the previous strength of the link, which is also some comfort.
As I said before, it was made infinitely easier by keeping a consistent URL structure. If you can do that, which you're aiming to do, minus the new extensions, it can be a quick and fairly painless process. If you want some advice on how to quickly get the 301 lists ready, let me know (hope you like excel!).
Hope my input helps, but I'm definitely joining you in wondering if anyone's used that plugin. Failing that, 301s can help preserve rankings.

Just moved to CDN and site dropped in Google
Hi there, I have been modifying a clients site for months now trying to get higher up in Google for the term "wedding dresses essex" on the website https://www.preciousmomentsbridalwear.co.uk/ It's always ranked around 7th / 8th place and we want to try and get it into 4/5th position ideally. I have optimised pages and then due to the site speed not being that great we moved it to MaxCDN this week which has made the site much faster, but now we have dropped to number 10 in Google and in danger of dropping out of the first page. I was hoping that making the site much faster for desktop and mobile would help not hinder! Any help would be appreciated! Simon

Hreflang tag on links to alternate language site
Hey everyone! In the interest of trying to be brief, here's the situation in my favorite form of communication, bullet points! Client has two sites; one is in English and one is in Japanese Each site is a separate URL, no sub-domains or sub-pages Each main page on the English version of the site has a link to the homepage of the Japanese site Site has decent rankings overall, with room for improvement from page 2 to page 1 No Hreflang tags currently used in links to the Japanese version from the English version Given that the site isn't really suffering for most rankings, would this be helpful to implement on the English version? Ideally, I'd like each link to be updated to the corresponding subject matter of the Japanese, but in the interim it seems like identifying to Google that the link on the other side is a different language might be helpful to both the user and to maybe help those rankings on page two creep a little higher to page one. Thanks for reading, I appreciate your time.

Link Juice + Site Structure
Hi All, I have attached a simple website model.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Mark_Ch
Page A is the home page attracting 1000 visitors per month.
One click away is Page B with 400 visitors per month, so on and so forth. You get an idea of the flow and clicks required to get to various pages. I have purposely placed Pages E-G to be 3 clicks away as they yield very little traffic. 1] Is this the best way to distribute link juice?
2] Should I point Pages C + D back to page A to influence its Page Rank (PA) Any other useful advice would be appreciated. Thanks Mark vafnchI0 -

Does Google still don't index Hashtag Links ? No chance to get a Search Result that leads directly to a section of a page? or to one of numeras Hashtag Pages in a single HTML page? If I have 4 or 5 different hashtag link section pages , consolidated into one HTML Page, no chance to get one of the Hashtag Pages to appear as a search result? like, if under one Single Page Travel Guide I have two essential sections: #Attractions #Visa no chance to direct search queries for Visa directly to the Hashtag Link Section of #Visa? Thanks for any help

Troubled QA Platform - Site Map vs Site Structure
I'm running a Q&A forum that was built prioritizing UX over SEO. This decision has cause a bit of a headache as we're 6 months into the project with 2278 Q&A pages with extremely minimal traffic coming from search engines. The structure has the following hiccups: A. The category navigation from the main Q&A page is entirely javascript and only navigable by users. B. We identify Google bots and send them to another version of the Q&A platform w/o javascript. Category links don't exist in this google bot version of the main Q&A page. On this Google version of the main Q&A page, the Pinterest-like tiles displaying individual Q&As are capped at 10. This means that the only way google bot can identify link juice being passed down to individual QAs (after we've directed them to this page) is through 10 random Q&As. C. All 2278 of the QAs are currently indexed in search. They are just indexed very very poorly in SERPs. My personal assumption, is that Google can't pass link juice to any of the Q&As (poor SERP) but registers them from the site map so it gets included in Google's index. My dilemma has me struggling between two different decisions: 1. Update the navigation in the header to remove the javascript and fundamentally change the look and feel of the Q&A platform. This will allow Google bot to navigate through Expert category links to pass link juice to all Q&As. or 2. Update the redirected main Q&A page to include hard coded category links with 100s of hard coded Q&As under each category page. Make it similar, ugly, flat and efficient for the crawling bots. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I need to find a solution as soon as possible.

How do I best deal with pages returning 404 errors as they contain links from other sites?
I have over 750 URL's returning 404 errors. The majority of these pages have back links from sites, however the credibility of these pages from what I can see is somewhat dubious, mainly forums and sites with low DA & PA. It has been suggested placing 301 redirects from these pages, a nice easy solution, however I am concerned that we could do more harm than good to our sites credibility and link building strategy going into 2013. I don't want to redirect these pages if its going to cause a panda/penguin problem. Could I request manual removal or something of this nature? Thoughts appreciated.

Do I have to tell WBT site moved to a subdirectory on another internal site?
I am moving content from one site to another and redirecting the DNS from www.oldsite.com to www.newsite.com/old-site. I have put the 301 in place but I wanted to make sure I have to also tell Webmaster Tools to change the old site to the new domain? We still want the old domain name to answer and redirect to www.newsite.com/old-site. Thanks

How to structure your site correctly for optimal juice flow?
Hello fellow mozzers. I have a question regarding structuring a site for optimal link juice flow. If you have an existing website that has for instance a contact page, we know its pointless for that page to have any juice at all. In a hypothetical scenario would it be ok to no index, no follow that page? What happens to existing pagerank on such a page? for instance if you have a contact page with pr 4 and you no index, no follow it, I understand the pagerank will disappear from that page but will it be distributed to other pages on your site? What would be the correct way of handling this scenario?
