Pages Linking to Sites that Return 404 Error
-
We have just a few 404 errors on our site. Is there any way to figure out which pages are linking to the pages that create 404 errors? I would rather fix the links than create new 301 redirects.
Thanks!

Thanks. I will check them out.
I really appreciated your help on this!

I see what you are saying now.
Google Webmaster Tools will show you both internal links that are broken/bad, as well as inbound links pointing to your site.
SEOmoz Crawl Diagnostics will show you, "4xx status codes are shown when the client requests a page that cannot be accessed. This is usually the result of a bad or broken link."
So if you are receiving 404 errors on your website using the SEOmoz tools, that means that you have a broken internal link.
To diagnose finding the broken link, you can try running ScreamingFrog, which "should" be able to point out the bad link.
Hope this helps.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for your prompt response. That was helpful. Google Webmaster does not show the same errors as SEOmoz.
I think some redirect that I got fixed yesterday may also have taken care of these errors, which would mean the SEOmoz last crawl may be outdated. If SEOmoz keeps showing these errors, should I just ignore them since Google is more relevant?
Thanks,
Ricarda

Hi Ricarda,
You should be able to use Google Webmaster Tools > Crawl Errors to view a list of 404 pages and the websites that are linking to those pages.
Hope this helps.

Webmaster message - increase in 404 pages
I've had a message in webmaster tools: Increase in “404” pages on http://www.ethicaredental.co.uk/There are 1000 pages in the crawl error list. But all of them direct to t a 404 page, i.e http://www.ethicaredental.co.uk/search?searchword=toothwhich, which as far as I can tell has all the necessary features of a good 404 page (clear message saying the page doesnt exist anymore, navigation, and business details. The webiste was built in Joomla previous to a re-design in Wordpress. Is this a Joomla issue? How can I satisfy webmaster and Googles crawl to understand these are decent 404 pages? Or dop all 1000 pages need to be 301 redirected.??Any thoughts appreciated

Removing a large number of unnecessary pages from a site
Hi all, I got a big problem with my website. I have a lot of page, duplicate page made from various combinations of selects, and for all this duplicate content we've be hit by a panda update 2 years ago. I don't want to bring new content an all of these pages, about 3.000.000, because most of them are unnecessary. Google indexed all of them (3.000.000), and I want to redirect the pages that I don't need anymore to the most important ones. My question, is there any problem in how google will see this change, because after this it will remain only 5000-6000 relevant pages?

Do DoubleClick DART Tags degrade link juice to your site?
My site has a content distribution agreement with Yahoo Finance for the daily articles we publish. It's delivered to them via XML, and while we don't have in-line links within the article, we do have 1. Clickable Logo image 2. Standard language at the end of the article with a link back to our registration page We use DART clicktags (http://ad.....) that redirects to our homepage combined with ?src=YahooFinance&affiliateId=77 query strings that are generated by these clicks to measure registration and sources My question is twofold. 1. Are the doublclick clicktags hurting the valuable linkbacks from Yahoo Finance for picking up our content 2. What should be done with the query string extentions once people land. We still want to see that data in our Google Analytics, so is a rel=canonical the appropriate solution?

Old proudct pages - eComm Site
Hello, Geeks.com currently has approx. 194k pages in Google index. (approx. 30k suppl.) http://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Ageeks.com+inurl%3Aadditem&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a#sclient=psy&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=Ltp&rls=org.mozilla:en-US%3Aofficial&source=hp&q=site:www.geeks.com%2F&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&pbx=1&fp=876898a2ea0c82c7&biw=1512&bih=641 We have many thousands of old product urls which have gone out of stock, never to "see the light of day" again. 14 years worth! Should we be 301'ing all old products pages that go out of stock, if we know for certain we will never carry that SKU again? If we were to do a "mass" 301 of 30k+ urls how would google or other SE's react to that? Could there be any negative implications to doing so? What is considered best practice for eComm sites, as I imagine we are not alone with this type of situation. Thank you in advance. Michael B.

How to find links to 404 pages?
I know that I used to be able to do this, but I can't seem to remember. One of the sites I am working on has had a lot of pages moving around lately. I am sure some links got lost in the fray that I would like to recover, what is the easiest way to see links going to a domain that are pointing to 404 pages?
