Which Blog Extension is the best for a Magento E-commerce Site?
-
Hello,
We have developed our e-commerce site in Magento and we are launching our own blog.
Currently we are using an aheadWorks blog extension, but I was wondering if it is better for SEO to use a Wordpress extension.
What do you think?
Thank you!!
-
Wordpress is the most vulnerable platforms that can be easily hacked info. If you connect your magento store to wordpress via fishpig or any other extension its only a matter of time before your store gets hacked. BEWARE
-
We used Wordpress for our Magento blog but the issue is a difference in static and dynamic pages. The Wordpress blog, because of the time stamps, took priority over our website and product pages. We had to remove the wordpress and create pages/categories manually. We lost a TON of ranking when we added a wordpress blog to our Magento website.
Is there an SEO friendly way around having the blog rank hiring than the website and products?
-
Hi Alejandro,
I was wondering how you got on with this?
I'm currently looking at moving a client away from the Magneto AhedWorks blog extension as the SEO functionality seems very lacking.
I'm looking at the wordpress integration.
Did it work out for you?
Thanks!

I don't know if this is something you're interested or not in but I thought I would let you know. The company that offers the extension also offers these two services I posted below. I would imagine it would only be common sense that you would want your blog to match the rest of your site. As WordPress is still installed as a template you can of course customize the template to whatever look or feel you want it to have. I don't know if this is something that you want to do on your own or if it's something that you'd be interested in taking advantage of at the time of purchase here. However I thought I might just make you aware of it and hopefully be of some help.
UPDATE TEMPLATES TO MATCH YOUR THEME IN WORDPRESS INTEGRATION
Update Templates to Match Your Theme in WordPress Integration
Most Magento eCommerce themes extend the default Magento theme but some sites have bespoke templates that don't quite match. When this happens, your newly integrated WordPress blog might not look as good as you had hoped. If this is the case, we can update the blog templates to match your custom HTML syntax. This will make your blog inherit your Magento styles and look as good as your Magento eCommerce website.

ADD RECENT POSTS BLOCK FOR WORDPRESS INTEGRATION
Add Recent Posts Block for WordPress Integration
One of the great benefits of WordPress Integration is the SEO benefits it offers your Magento eCommerce site. By adding a recent posts block to your website, you will keep your content fresh and updated, which means Google will keep coming back more often!
This service is perfect for Magento store owners who want a nice looking recent posts block adding to their Magento site quickly and without any hassle!

I second what Francisco said. Please let us know how it goes and good luck to you. Sincerely,
Thomas
PS When you get the answer from somebody like Francisco did In the very first reply to this to you it's a customary to give a thumbs up to that person. Just let you know not trying to force anything. So I would give a thumbs up to Francisco
-
Awesome! Let me know how it goes.
-
Thanks for your help Thomas and Francisco,
Just to clarify, we are not trying to change our e-commerce platform, we just want an extension for a blog within Magento.
I think we will try with the wordpress extension you shared in the first link.
Thanks again for the information!
-
I have never used Aheadworks. As far as I know, it's a pretty reputable company that makes many Magento plugins.
-
Hi Francisco,
Have you ever used the Aheadworks blog? I have seen it run but I was not impressed. However I think we're both in agreement that in this case because he's running Maghneto already as the main framework that he's better off to use WordPress just for the blog itself. Over the other
"aheadWorks blog"
PS
I've been lucky then. I use DynECT for transactional emails on WordPress and I suggested for any Wordpress website. Just because even if you have no contact list it's smart to run a SMTP server off of your website you really don't want to mix those A record IP and email IP addresses if you can help it. with the cost of sending transactional email being so little it is well worth it I think it depends on the host as well. I don't mean to get off topic at all however I am all these things have to do with the best practices for e-commerce. Which I think we both agreed transactional email is definitely a must. On with the ability to have a large amount of customers on the site at a time processing that's on the framwork payment gate & where the host has to be great in but using Maghneto I do strongly recommend hosting provider like fire host

I would probably take it one step further and say to use Magneto if you have or expect higher volume sales. Even if a magento site has 10 products, but there are 100 sales per day, it's better than WP.
I use WP everyday as well as Magneto. But we are getting off topic now.

Hi Francisco,
I just responded to this. I apologize, and I did it in advance actually. I know it was my mistake I got a 404 probably didn't copy the entire URL. You are correct I was wrong.
To be honest if you are talking about a very large website I agree with you if you're talking about a medium or smaller I would go WordPress woo commerce is an outstanding plug-in and everyone has there opinions mine is simply different.
-
Francisco, thumbs up you've got it I'm sorry I had written buddy that that was a 404 for some reason I clicked on it twice, and it did not function and now it does so I apologize. wanted to say bravo and I hope that these guys have a good look at

http://www.johnon.com/493/magento-seo.html
I'm sure you guys understand that the speed of your site is directly related to your conversion ratio with e-commerce. Therefore Nginx is much better than Apache-based servers use

Why the link below explains
http://www.magentocommerce.com/boards/viewthread/38134
if you guys don't have an extremely extremely large site I would use WordPress every day of the week.
-
I just checked the link. It works.
WordPress = Static Site/BLog
Magento = eCommerce.
I don't think anyone should be running an ecommerce site using WP, ESPECIALLY if they are doing high volume. Magento is built for ecommerce. Wordpress isn't. You have to find a plugin.
Ecommerce involves transactional emails, tracking numbers, customer accounts, repeat orders, and way more. WP is okay for only a few products.
-
You need to talk to yoast
yoast.comI hope you understand my Magento has no search engine optimization functions built-in.
I would read everything in the links below end make your decision.
Yoast Has done a fantastic job of building the best SEO plug-in for WordPress he has also built a plug-in and more for Magento it is the URL right below. I want to tell you I think in today's age depending on your size of your site you are nuts to run Magento compared to woocommerce build on WordPress as you will read depending on your needs and your site which I don't know you most likely would be much better off search engine wise with a WordPress-based site then Magento

Francisco,
I tried your link, and I got an 404 it could be something I did that's a mistake. Because I know you know your stuff. However I came across this way to integrate WordPress into Magento so I thought it could not hurt to have a backup in case the site did not work for them

I am a huge supporter of WordPress. For SEO it is better then aheadworks everyday In my opinion it is the best blogging platform and web platform made. However there are people that just with my personal opinion but I do know that Matt Cutts agrees that WordPress is good for search engine optimization works good for the Google bot. You really should use a WordPress blog if you've Have already developed the site over anything else on the market because WordPress is free it has tens of thousands of free plug-ins somewhere paid obviously the only thing I would recommend is that you take into account the fact that WordPress has a database and is best served up on a managed WordPress host but obviously you're using Magento e-commerce so I imagine you know the importance of high quality hosting. Maybe take a managed Wordpress host WPengine, Zippykid, Pagely, web synthesis to host the blog they will be worth the cost every time or use a outstanding host look at somebody like firehost, Pair, someone great bluebox.net use a CDN AND BLOG OFTEN.
If I can be of any more assistance let me know. I can strongly recommend high-quality fast hosting for anything that is e-commerce so it should fit nicely in with your WordPress setup and you will love the ability to post so easily and rank well. I would say WordPress is #1 all the way sincerely, Thomas

Redirecting an Entire Site to a Page on Another Site?
So I have a site that I want to shut down http://vowrenewalsmaui.com and redirect to a dedicated Vow Renewals page I am making on this site here: https://simplemauiwedding.net. My main question is: I don't want to lose all the authority of the pages and if I just redirect the site using my domain registrar's 301 redirect it will only redirect the main URL not all of the supporting pages, to my knowledge. How do I not lose all the authority of the supporting pages and still shut down the site and close down my site builder? I know if I leave the site up I can redirect all of the individual pages to corresponding pages on the other site, but I want to be done with it. Just trying to figure out if there is a better way than I know of. The domain is hosted through GoDaddy.

Breaking up a site into multiple sites
Hi, I am working on plan to divide up mid-number DA website into multiple sites. So the current site's content will be divided up among these new sites. We can't share anything going forward because each site will be independent. The current homepage will change to just link out to the new sites and have minimal content. I am thinking the websites will take a hit in rankings but I don't know how much and how long the drop will last. I know if you redirect an entire domain to a new domain the impact is negligible but in this case I'm only redirecting parts of a site to a new domain. Say we rank #1 for "blue widget" on the current site. That page is going to be redirected to new site and new domain. How much of a drop can we expect? How hard will it be to rank for other new keywords say "purple widget" that we don't have now? How much link juice can i expect to pass from current website to new websites? Thank you in advance.

Best practices for structuring an ecommerce site
I'm revamping my wife's ecommerce site. It is currently a very low traffic website that is not indexed very well in Google. So, my plan is to restructure it based upon the best practices that helps me avoid duplicate content penalties, and easier to index strategies. The store has about 7 types of products. Each product has approximately 30 different size variations that are sometimes specifically searched for. For example: 20x10x1 air filters, 20x10x2 air filters, 20x10x1 allergy reducing air filters, etc So, is it best for me to create 7 different products with 30 different size variations (size selector at the product level that changes the price) or is it better to create 210 different product pages, one for each style/size?

[E-commerce] Duplicate content due to color variations (canonical/indexing)
Hello, We currently have a lot of color variations on multiple products with almost the same content. Even with our canonicals being set, Moz's crawling tool seems to flag them as duplicate content. What we have done so far: Choosing the best-selling color variation (our "master product") Adding a rel="canonical" to every variation (with our "master product" as the canonical URL) In my opinion, it should be enough to address this issue. However, being given the fact that it's flagged as duplicate by Moz, I was wondering if there is something else we should do? Should we add a "noindex, follow" to our child products and "index, follow" to our master product? (sounds to me like such a heavy change) Thank you in advance

Strange situation - Started over with a new site. WMT showing the links that previously pointed to old site.
I have a client whose site was severely affected by Penguin. A former SEO company had built thousands of horrible anchor texted links on bookmark pages, forums, cheap articles, etc. We decided to start over with a new site rather than try to recover this one. Here is what we did: -We noindexed the old site and blocked search engines via robots.txt -Used the Google URL removal tool to tell it to remove the entire old site from the index -Once the site was completely gone from the index we launched the new site. The new site had the same content as the old other than the home page. We changed most of the info on the home page because it was duplicated in many directory listings. (It's a good site...the content is not overoptimized, but the links pointing to it were bad.) -removed all of the pages from the old site and put up an index page saying essentially, "We've moved" with a nofollowed link to the new site. We've slowly been getting new, good links to the new site. According to ahrefs and majestic SEO we have a handful of new links. OSE has not picked up any as of yet. But, if we go into WMT there are thousands of links pointing to the new site. WMT has picked up the new links and it looks like it has all of the old ones that used to point at the old site despite the fact that there is no redirect. There are no redirects from any pages of the old to the new at all. The new site has a similar name. If the old one was examplekeyword.com, the new one is examplekeywordcity.com. There are redirects from the other TLD's of the same to his (i.e. examplekeywordcity.org, examplekeywordcity.info), etc. but no other redirects exist. The chances that a site previously existed on any of these TLD's is almost none as it is a unique brand name. Can anyone tell me why Google is seeing the links that previously pointed to the old site as now pointing to the new? ADDED: Before I hit the send button I found something interesting. In this article from dejan SEO where someone stole Rand Fishkin's content and ranked for it, they have the following line: "When there are two identical documents on the web, Google will pick the one with higher PageRank and use it in results. It will also forward any links from any perceived ’duplicate’ towards the selected ‘main’ document." This may be what is happening here. And just to complicate things further, it looks like when I set up the new site in GA, the site owner took the GA tracking code and put it on the old page. (The noindexed one that is set up with a nofollowed link to the new one.) I can't see how this could affect things but we're removing it. Confused yet? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

What is the proper way to display e-commerce product guides? PDF / JPG?
Hi, On each product page in my e-commerce site, I have a link to show a certificate of authenticity for the product. (similar to any guide in an e-commerce site). I also have the details as plain text on the page, but this is required. What is the correct way to show it, using PDF or JPG? Thanks

Best links to gain?
Hi, Just a quick one to see what peoples thoughts are regarding links. I have just gained a free link on a .gov website in the UK. In one of their offers pages, will this provide any link value or domain trust to me and what can the benefits be SEO wise from having a link on a government domain? The link is just the website url with a a few lines of text detailing our address etc... so its not got any anchor text regarding targetting one of our brands. It is equallly, less or more important to target anchor text links to specific brands or to get good high quality links from trusted sites such as the .gov one I have linking to my root domain? The website is a local council website in the UK. And was listed by a member of their staff, who only list in the offer page if your offering discount to council members etc..., so its not a spammed page or anything like that. What are peoples views on anchor text links vs domain url links? Cheers Will

One site or five sites for geo targeted industry
OK I'm looking to try and generate traffic for people looking for accommodation. I'm a big believer in the quality of the domain being used for SEO both in terms of the direct benefit of it having KW in it but also the effect on CTR a good domain can have. So I'm considering these options: Build a single site using the best, broad KW-rich domain I can get within my budget. This might be something like CheapestHotelsOnline.com Advantages: Just one site to manage/design One site to SEO/market Better potential to resell the site for a few million bucks Build 5 sites, each catering to a different region using 5 matching domains within my budget. These might be domains like CheapHotelsEurope.com, CheapHotelsAsia.com etc Advantages: Can use domains that are many times 'better' by adding a geo-qualifier. This should help with CTR and search Can be more targeted with SEO & Marketing So hopefully you see the point. Is it worth the dilution of SEO & marketing activities to get the better domain names? I'm chasing the longtail searchs whetever I do. So I'll be creating 5K+ pages each targeting a specific area. These would be pages like CheapestHotelsOnline.com/Europe/France/Paris or CheapHoteslEurope.com/France/Paris to target search terms targeting hotels in Paris So with that thought, is SEO even 100% diluted? Say, a link to the homepage of the first option would end up passing 1/5000th of value through to the Paris page. However a link to the second option would pass 1/1000th of the link juice through to the Paris page. So by thet logic, one only needs to do 1/5th of the work for each of the 5 sites ... that implies total SEO work would be the same? Thanks as always for any help! David
