Index Page Content
-
Mozers,
I am of the believe and as a person who puts the utmost emphasis on the index page of any website I am trying to rank, especially with a new domain ... insuring content is relevant, structured, optimized and we have some link juice flowing in.
I find once we get the index page ranked, Google's little bots then start to index and rank accordingly the rest of the website ... and we start producing results.
We also develop websites (dare I say its where we expertise in) and unexpectantly the client has asked us to carry out SEO work additionally to their web development.
Problem lies here, their index page, has absolutely no written content at all, just one large image with a logo (Fashion Website) ...Which I identify as a huge issue as per my explanation is paragraphs one or two.
I am sure withe the many more qualified SEO experts and gurus within the SEOmoz community, you have also come across this issue
So a few questions, if you don't mind adding advice.
1 - Am I putting too much emphasize on content within the index page, in terms of indexing and actually ranking ...yes I appreciate that terms within the website will be ranked against other pages other than the index page, but will it harm us for having no content at all within the index page
2 - If so, and yes is the answer to above, how do we handle it, we have spoke with the client and he is pretty adamant that he want the index page as is, he has been through out the whole website building process.
As suggested, any advice would be really appreciated, its a difficult market to rank within a it is, and i can only see this index page making the task a lot more difficult
Cheers

Hi John,
No it's very far from a text spinner it's a fantastic way to get fresh relevant content onto the site and know that the words will relate to each other and work with new Google's algorithm as well.
I'm glad I could be of help. Good luck with your site and I'm certain it will be great.
all the best,
Tom

Thanks a million Thomas ...
Your advice is very much appreciated ...
I had never came across Scribe, at first I thought it was another text spinner .... but watching their video, it seems a lot more ...
Cheers again

Hi John,
in my opinion you will be all right if you follow the correct steps. Definitely use rich snippets
https://developers.google.com/webmasters/richsnippets/
they can say a lot without showing up on your page showing up.
Another tool I would highly suggest if you want to make your words as relevant as possible is
it is able to be used with Microsoft Word and via the browser alone so you do not have to be a WordPress user to take advantage of it.
If you give it a good enough description along with a high-quality site map and don't forget to name your internal links with keywords as you really don't have much to play with you have to use what you got.
If I can be of more help please let me know. I think if the website is good enough you will rank very well. I have seen flash websites for good companies rank very high and that is we know has nothing behind it in terms of what the Google bot read.
sincerely,
Thomas

Hi Thomas,
Thanks for the reply
Yes, I mean Front Page when I refer to index page (should I take my web designer old school web designer hat off :D) .... We had suggested using text as opposed to his logo, but the font is an issue (always something) ,so unfortunately we are left with using an image.
We will optimize meta tags correctly ,as with the two alt tags we will have, we purposely decided not to use JS for the resizing of the front image full page and will target each monitor size with a different image through CSS ,thus allowing us a second alt tag along with the one for the logo.
But here also lies the problem, its essentially an e-commerce website, we have built it the website and incorporated Foxy Cart (shameless plug for amazing software for any developers out there), allowing us to dictate all URL naming extensions and so on
But content internally is not great either, but that's something we know we need to address. We will include a structured blog style section within thew website, which we are sure will give us a lot more scope in relation to targeting phrases. Its the only road we can go down in realtion to getting content within the website
But refreshingly, you give me hope if you say that it wont be detrimental to the project that lack of front page content
Regards
John

when you say their index page. Are you referring to their homepage?
If it is only one page you may not have an issue. However, I would use my alt text wisely. In addition, I would make any words that are written at all real words. Not a photograph just place the type on top of the photo if you can.
Look up some of the ways people have ranked flash pages I know it has been done successfully I don't know how successfully but I know it has been done
I would hope the rest of the website has some content? if not I would imagine you would have a hard time ranking in Google.

Static content pages ranking dropping all the time
Hello all. I have been working three months in my current job in the hotel industry. I have been publishing a lot of content to our website (mainly articles), which in general have been ranking well and really boosted our website traffic. The problem that I am facing, though, is the fact that our static pages' rankings are basically constantly dropping. Especially one of our main pages, which is this hotel page. I haven't been doing any real changes to the content, but the ranking (with keywords "hotelli helsinki" [Hotel in Helsinki in Finnish]) has plummeted from 13th position all the way down to 19th... What has been happening during these last three months is that we did change to a new domain and we have done all the redirections and also informed Google about this change through search console. I have also done some minor changes to the on-page content, such as changing the meta titles and descriptions as well as the page title and some of the text content to more natural ones instead of clumsy SEO texts and optimizing the images. This hasn't helped at all though and the rankings seem to steadily drop all the time. What would YOU do with this page? Maybe add more text content to the page to be more informative? All tips would be highly appreciated.

Duplicate content from page links
So for the last month or so I have been going through fixing SEO content issues on our site. One of the biggest issues has been duplicate content with WHMCS. Some have been easy and other have been a nightmare trying to fix. Some of the duplicate content has been the login page when a page requires a login. For example knowledge base article that are only viewable by clients etc. Easily fixed for me as I dont really need them locked down like that. However pages like affiliate.php and pwreset.php that are only linked off of a page. I am unsure how to take care of these types. Here are some pages that are being listed as duplicate: Should this type of stuff be a 301 redirect to cart.php or would that break something. I am guessing that everything should point back to cart.php.

https://www.bluerayconcepts.com/brcl...php?a=checkout These are the ones that are really weird to me. These are showing as duplicate content but pwreset is only a link of the KB category. It shows up as duplicate many times as does affilliate.php: https://www.bluerayconcepts.com/brcl...ebase/16/Email

Keyword Appearing on Home Page - Moz Page Grader
Hi Today I entered www.partydomain.co.uk through the Moz Page Grader and found that the Home Page is Ranked B. I noticed that an Area we could improve on is the amount of times we are using our main keyword "Fancy Dress" on the home page. Please can you take a look at www.partydomain.co.uk and scroll to the bottom of the page were the tabs are containing losts of content. I am thinking about removing all of thoose Tabs. Our Competitors dont have any content as such on the home page and are ranking higher than Party Domain for "fancy dress" What do you think ? remove all the tabs to be like the others that rank better? Or cut the text right down ? Thanks Adam

Pages exclusion
Hi there! I don't want to "make relevan"t 3 of the pages my website has. Should I give them a title and a description even if I dont't want them to be shown in the SERPs? Is there any penalty from google if I don't do so? I guess no but just to confirm. Thanks!

Old pages
I have a site where I have 5,000 new products each year, I never waned to deleted the old pages due to links pointing to them and keywords. But I now have 20,000 plus pages, does having that many pages spread out my link juice or does it effect me in any other ways over having a site with 5,000 pages or should I keep not deleting old pages so I dont loose any links? Along with that I currently do not link to my old pages from my site so Im guessing google does not get to them very often if at all, if you agree to still keep them should I link to them somewhere? Because the products are not that simiiar and they do bring added value I dont think canonical would work here

Framed Pages and Dynamic Pages
Has anyone else had experience with different CMS's for Ecommerce . Ones that create static pages and others that dynamically create pages. What differences have you seen with rankings on google with the two. Here are two examples of sites using static framed pages and one with a system that dynamically creates pages - http://www.gardeningexpress.co.uk/ - static frames and http://www.floraselect.co.uk - dynamically

Woah, my A-grade optimized pages that were on the first page have all vanished outside the top 50 in Google... is this Panda?
Yep as mentioned, I had some pages hit the top ten pretty quickly after ensuring they were A-grade for pretty uncompetitive keywords however, today, all bar 2 have just vanished from the top 50! All were ranking in Google.co.uk and I know we were predicting the Panda update to hit soon but WOW! My client is understandably a little upset, what on earch do I tell him and what should I do about it? Cheers! jT
