Stopping slow steady decline
-
I work for an ecommerce company and I have been tasked with trying to understand our lack of organic traffic. For the past two years our organic traffic is in free fall. We have 80% drop in organic visits since summer 2011. I can't put my finger on what is causing it. Here are a few hypothesis I've tried.
Penalty - I don't think it is a penalty because we still have some first page results.
Penguin- I know in the past (10 years), we haven't used gray hat (paying for blogging) strategies. But I don't see a steep decline that would lead me to think its a penguin update.
Panda - For the past two years we have been re-writing content for our 10,000 products and creating videos. But even though our content is better than every, we haven't had any uptick in organic traffic.
Does anyone have any suggestions on where / how to investigate these issues further?
I've attached our organic traffic graph. October 2011 we launched a new site, saw a large dip in traffic. It slightly rebounded, and then has slowly suffocated ever since.

You should get an Advanced Google Analytics Consultant to figure out what is happening. I know if I were in this problem, I would be running a lot of Advanced Segments. Every business is different so there's no canned responses. Also the reason I say to hire someone for an analysis is if what you say is true and you don't believe the site has a penalty, then you can be losing traffic for many other reasons.
You need to find out "why" conversions are lower.

Did a new competitor enter your vertical? You usually don't see a slow death like that unless you are slowly losing your ranking to someone else. I'd look at your webmaster tools to see where you are ranking for specific keywords. It has it broken down by position in there, as well as just average ranking.
For example, every time I checked a specific phrase with a tool I ranked #1. Yet, I was only getting 10% of the traffic from that word. So, I dug deeper, and it turns out I was popping up #1 50% of the time, but the rest of the time I was somewhere in the top 5.

Google indexing is slowing down?
I have up to 20 million unique pages, and so far I've only submitted about 30k of them on my sitemap. We had a few load related errors during googles initial visits, and it thought some were duplicates, but we fixed all that. We haven't gotten a crawl related error for 2 weeks now. Google appears to be indexing fewer and fewer urls every time it visits. Any ideas why? I am not sure how to get all our pages indexed if its going to operate like this... love some help thanks! Direct To Site Traffic Decline
Hi Everyone, My company's site went from Http to Https and responsive design last year. After 6 months passed, we noticed a 40% decline from direct visits but revenue saw an increase. Could the 301 redirects from Http to Https cause the drop in direct traffic? Thanks!

Google stopped crawling my site. Everybody is stumped.
This has stumped the Wordpress staff and people in the Google Webmasters forum. We are in Google News (have been for years), and so new posts are crawled immediately. On Feb 17-18 Crawl Stats dropped 85%, and new posts were no longer indexed (not appearing on News or search). Data highlighter attempts return "This URL could not be found in Google's index." No manual actions by Google. No changes to the website; no custom CSS. No Site Errors or new URL errors. No sitemap problems (resubmitting didn't help). We're on wordpress.com, so no odd code. We can see the robot.txt file. Other search engines can see us, as can social media websites. Older posts still index, but loss of News is a big hit. Also, I think overall Google referrals are dropping. We can Fetch the URL for a new post, and many hours later it appears on Google and News, and we can then use Data Highlighter. It's now 6 days and no recovery. Everybody is stumped. Any ideas? I just joined, so this might be the wrong venue. If so, apologies.

What can I do to stop ranking for a keyword that has nothing to do with the companies website?
A website that we maintain keeps ranking for the keyword 'homeless shelter'. The company is UTILIS USA and they produce heavy duty shelters for military personnel. They have nothing to do with homeless shelters but continue to receive traffic concerning the phrase.

How do I stop www.mysite.com/ showing as a duplicate of www.mysite.com
I have run the campaigns software over a site and it is showing that www.mysite.com/ is a duplicate of www.mysite.com, how do I correct this? Is it a genuine duplicate page? My first thought was to use rel canonical but there is no page called / to put it on. Your suggestions welcomed Sean

Htaccess redirects how many can i have and does it slow site down
I have had to redesign my site this year www.in2town.co.uk because my hosting company made a huge mistake while trying to update the joomla on my site which resulted in me losing thousands of pages and links. What i would like to know is, i have put some of the old urls in my htaccess file but i would like to know how many old urls i can have in my htaccess file as i am unsure how to use it properly. my idea was, to have some of the lost url links to my site and put them in my htaccess file and have them pointing to similar pages. not sure if this is a good idea or not. i think i have lost a few hundred good links but i would like to know if these urls in the htaccess file would slow down my joomla site any advice would be great.

Sudden SERP stop for main keyword.
Hey guys, I have a website with about 30 Google indexed pages. Most of my pages are perfoming well for my keywords. My homepage recently started doing extremely well. Number 4 overall for a highly competitive keyword/niche. Then after a week it dropped completely off the map. It still shows for secondary and tertiary keywords. But my primary keyword does not rank anywhere. I checked as deep as 50 pages. It's been 3 weeks now. Any ideas of what might have happened? Is there really a sandbox? Could I maybe have been Panda slapped? Or do you think it is more likely just a technical/SEO issue. It just seems odd that it jumped so high and then disappeared??

How to stop Search Bot from crawling through a submit button
On our website http://www.thefutureminders.com/, we have three form fields that have three pull downs for Month, Day, and year. This is creating duplicate pages while indexing. How do we tell the search Bot to index the page but not crawl through the submit button? Thanks Naren
