Client site is lacking content. Can we still optimize without it?
-
We just signed a new client whose site is really lacking in terms of content. Our plan is to add content to the site in order to achieve some solid on-page optimization. Unfortunately the site design makes adding content very difficult! Does anyone see where we may be going wrong? Is added content really the only way to go? http://empathicrecovery.com/

Thanks Mariah! Ive actually seen that video but this is great! Going to sblhow that to our client to reaffirm our recommendation to add content!

Take a look at this:
It goes over text VS images on google

I appreciate the detailed response! I'm very familiar with all of the strategies you outlined above , but my question was meant to focus solely on the on-page optimization aspect of the site. We haven't started work yet, but besides the obvious meta title/meta desc. h1, image alt etc. are there things we can do to this visual-based site and pages?

Persona Alignment: So there are a few things you can do for this page. First things first though, do you have the organizations customer personas? If so, do you know their search habits? What are they searching for? Performing a keyword analysis might help you refine and improve the copy that is currently on the website. This is always my number 1 go to before I start on any projects.
Competitor Analysis: Who are you competitors? Who is linking to them? What anchor text are they using? This should help you to come up with ideas for your own strategy.
Meta Tags: I took a very quick look at your source code and couldn't find any associated description. Definitely something you will want to add, especially from the usability side.
Link Building / Winning: It appears open site explorer doesn't have your site listed so I'm guessing it is pretty new. This will be a great resource for you though. Start looking at link building options though, are there local organizations who would want to provide this site as a resource? What kind of anchor text do you want to use?
Blogging: I know you are saying you are planning to add more content and that takes time, but blogging is an awesome way to start talking about popular topics around your keywords. Also, for a sobriety clinic such as this, I would say it would be worthwhile to establish yourself as an expert in the field.
Social: Engage socially, it looks like you have recently set up your social profiles, so use these to promote good quality blog content and engage with others in your industry
Local SEO: Use a tool like getlisted.org and make sure you have a local presence! If people are searching for rehab centers locally, they might not find you if you don't have a strong local presence.

Moving to a new site while keeping old site live
For reasons I won't get into here, I need to move most of my site to a new domain (DOMAIN B) while keeping every single current detail on the old domain (DOMAIN A) as it is. Meaning, there will be 2 live websites that have mostly the same content, but I want the content to appear to search engines as though it now belongs to DOMAIN B. Weird situation. I know. I've run around in circles trying to figure out the best course of action. What do you think is the best way of going about this? Do I simply point DOMAIN A's canonical tags to the copied content on DOMAIN B and call it good? Should I ask sites that link to DOMAIN A to change their links to DOMAIN B, or start fresh and cut my losses? Should I still file a change of address with GWT, even though I'm not going to 301 redirect anything?

Better SEO Option, 1 Site 3 Subdomains or 4 Separate Sites?
Hey Mozzers, I'm working with a client who wants to redo their web presence. They have a a main website for the umbrella and then 3 divisions which have their own website as well. My question is: Is it better to have the main site on the main domain and then have the 3 separate sites be subdomains? Or 4 different domains with a linking structure to tie them all together? To my understanding option 1 would include high traffic for 1 domain and option 2 would be building Page Authority by having 4 different sites linking to each other? My guess would be option 2, only if all 4 sites start getting relevant authority to make the links of value. But right out of the gates option 1 might be more beneficial. A little advice/clarification would be great!

How can I rank a national site for local terms
Hi All I have a website that covers all parts of the UK and I wish to be found for terms such as "car for sale London" "car for sale Manchester" and so on. In the past I have created separate landing pages for each town and city but with the quality score of a page becoming more of a ranking factor it is hard to make 300 + town pages interesting and useful. Is it best practice to do what I am doing and improve the quality of each of the pages or would I be better off removing the old pages and using some other technique to rank for the local searches? Thanks for your help

Sites with dynamic content - GWT redirects and deletions
We have a site that has extremely dynamic content. Every day they publish around 15 news flashes, each of which is setup as a distinct page with around 500 words. File structure is bluewidget.com/news/long-news-article-name. No timestamp in URL. After a year, that's a lot of news flashes. The database was getting inefficient (it's managed by a ColdFusion CMS) so we started automatically physically deleting news flashes from the database, which sped things up. The problem is that Google Webmaster Tools is detecting the freshly deleted pages and reporting large numbers of 404 pages. There are so many 404s that it's hard to see the non-news 404s, and I understand it would be a negative quality indicator to Google having that many missing pages. We were toying with setting up redirects, but the volume of redirects would be so large that it would slow the site down again to load a large htaccess file for each page. Because there isn't a datestamp in the URL we couldn't create a mask in the htaccess file automatically redirecting all bluewidget.com/news/yymm* to bluewidget.com/news These long tail pages do send traffic, but for speed we only want to keep the last month of news flashes at the most. What would you do to avoid Google thinking its a poorly maintained site?

Can a Hosting provider that also hosts adult content sites negatively affect our SEO rankings on a non-adult site hosted on same platform?
We're considering moving a site to a host that also offers hosting for adult websites. Can this have a negative affect on SEO, if our hosting company is in any way associated with adult websites?

Hit by Penguin, Can I move the content from the old site to a new domain and start again with the same content which is high quality
I need some advice please. My website got the unnatural links detected message and was hit by penguin.. hard. Can I move the content from the current domain to a new domain and start again or does the content need to be redone also. I will obviously turn of the old domain once its moved. The other option is to try and identify the bad links and change my anchor profile which is a hit and miss task in my opinion. Would it not be easier just to identify the good links pointing to the old domain and get those changed to point to the new domain with better anchors. thanks Warren
