Where Does Blogging Fit Into SEO
-
I read an article yesterday that said blogging comes under the heading of social media, which is at the top of the so called SEO pyramid. I have taken this to mean less time should be spent in social media compared to other areas of SEO.
Yet content creation was at the bottom of the pyramid (more time allocation here). Isn't blogging part of content creation?
I would have thought there is a limit to what can be done for service/product & landing pages. Whereas blogs are a great way to produce more unique content for a website.
Any clarification would be appreciated.
Thanks - Christina

Thanks for the clarification, that makes more sense.

I think that depends who you ask and how they build their blog into their website.
To me, a blog post is a way to publish quick content.... communicate in a couple of sentences or write a short article that can be done in a hour or two.
Real content (at least to me) is something more substantive - 500 to 5000 words accompanied by photos, charts, data.
If you do a little work to integrate your blog posts into your website then blog posts can be a lot more. They can be incorporated into FAQs, used in "related content" boxes that display across your site, be integrated with images and snippets into your category pages, and linked to for "more information" on your product pages... then you have more than a blog, you are using it like valuable content.

Thanks Andre, that's the opinion I had before I read the article.
Must be the amount of sun the UK is being exposed to, which is making me question my SEO knowledge.
-
I use my blog in the same way, I try to solve customers problems as well as my own, email it out to subscribers and share on social media channels.
However, the article I read made me wonder is there some weird difference between content and blogging.
-
The take away i assume you should have got from that article is that blogging is both a part Social and SEO.
- Google is attracted to fresh content. The more you blog, the more Google visits your website which in tern adds more content to its index resulting in more organic search traffic.
2.) Blogging on your site is a great way to engage with your customers and visitors on your site. The same way you engage in Social media. Blogging and sharing the content on social platforms is essentially a part of your social strategy.
In a nutshell, creating blog posts oftent increases the engagement you have with your audience (on social channels as well as comments on your blog) and at the same time improves the over all SEO of your site.
Hope that helps!

Here is how blogging works for me...
On a retail site I have a blog where I post on topics such as"how to use the product"... "how to select the product"... "how to fix the product".. "show what was made with the product"... "history of the product".... "answers to the most common questions we get about the product":.. "off-the-wall stuff about the product and trivia".
Then we have a big FAQ page that helps people find the blog post they need to answer their question.
For SEO, this blog generates content for non-transactional queries. In some niches there is more search for non-transactional queries than their is for transactional queries. When someone lands on one of these blog pages we have house ads and links to pages where they can purchase the product that they read about or the supplies that they need or a book.
These blog post attract traffic that was non-transactional but we get transactions out of them. They also get us into the SERPs that our competitors have not even thought about - because they are so focused on transactional queries and are too damn lazy to write helpful stuff for their customers. As a result, we have more informative content than all of our competitors combined. Then when people land on our site they say.. "WOW"... and many tell us that they purchased from our site because we have so much information.
On an information site I have a blog that tracks industry news and gets up to 30 very short posts per week. I post a couple sentences about a news story and link to it. It has an RSS feed and an email feed that people can subscribe to. About 20,000 people subscribe because three times a week they get an email message with 8 to 10 links to news links (on other websites) about the industry that the work in.
The news posts are noindexed because they are so short and would cause panda problems. However, each news posts goes into at least two categories (topic and geographic location). We have 150 categories and they bring in tens of thousands of visitors per month. Some people subscribe to the feed for some of the category pages instead of the general feed. Lots of industry websites link to this blog, some republish the feed in a widget - a few on their homepages.
When we have a new article on this site we give it prime position in the blog and the feed and that immediately shows new content to thousands of interested people, some of them share it right away, other email it... so it gives new content on our site a great lunge out of the gate. Occasionally we include a sales item as a post and that pulls in a few immediate sales.
If we have any problem with this it is that so many people bug us because they want us to feature their content or shout out their product or include information about promotions, obits, etc. We have to say "no" to a lot of people because nobody wants to read their personnel announcements or follow a link to their chest thumping blog post or land on their linkbuilder crap. A few people are very helpful and send us great stuff and that reduces the work for us.

Pagination & SEO
Hi We have automatically created brand pages based on which brand they have in their attributes. At the moment, developers have restricted the ability to properly optimise these for SEO, but I also wanted to look at how we should handle pagination. Example: http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/brand/manutan?page=1 http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/brand/manutan?page=2 http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/brand/manutan?page=3 Should we do any of the following - which I've found in an article: Put no follow on all links located on pagination pages Should we no index these pages as they are wasting crawl budget? - Don’t show links to page 2, 3, 4, 5… 10, 11, 12… at the end of your content but only a link to the next and previous pages so that you won’t dilute your page authority. Or does anyone else have any tips on how to handle these pages? Thank you!

Onsite SEO vs Offsite SEO
Hey I know the importance of both onsite & offsite, primarily with regard to outreach/content/social. One thing I am trying to determine at the moment, is how much do I invest in offsite. My current focus is to improve our onpage content on product pages, which is taking some time as we have a small team. But I also know our backlinks need to improve. I'm just struggling on where to spend my time. Finish the onsite stuff by section first, or try to do a bit of both onsite/offsite at the same time?

Domain Forwarding - SEO Impacts?
I have a site that has been active for years - thinkbiglearnsmart.com. Awhile ago I had purchased about 50 domain names that were relevant to my company. I still have those urls and would like to use them to point to different pages on my site - just because they have good key words in the URLs. For example - one is dreamweavertrainingclassesonlinelive.com. Currently they are all redirecting to my homepage. A. is that hurting me? B. I would like to redirect to the more relevant page. ie the page dedicated to Dreamweaver training (http://thinkbiglearnsmart.com/dreamweaver-creative-cloud-training-course/ ) Will this hurt my Dreamweaver keyword for example because there is already a 301 redirect on that page from a very old Dreamweaver link which was something like thinkbiglearnsmart.com/dreamweaver C. On my hosting account where I can select where the URL forwards to - it has an option for "Location forwarding" and "Frame forwarding" - currently they are set to Frame forwarding - which one is best? Any help is much appreciated!!! Thank you!

SEO: Subdomain vs folders
Hello, here's our situation:We have an ecommerce website, say www.example.com. For support, we use zendesk which offers a great platform that makes publishing FAQ and various resource articles very easy. We're torn between publishing these articles on our actual website, or publishing them via Zendesk. If we publish them on our website, the url would be something like:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | yacpro13
www.example.com/articles/title_article.html On the other hand, if we publish them via zendesk, the url would look like:
support.example.com/articles/title_of_article We would like to publish them via Zendesk, however, we do no want to miss out on any SEO benefit, however marginal it may be. Doing it this way, the domain would have all of the ecommerce pages (product and category pages), and the subdomain would have ALL other types of pages (help articles and also policies, such as return policies, shipping info, etc etc). I know a long time ago, folders were preferred over subdomains for SEO, but things change all the time.Do you think setting up all the ecommerce pages on the domain, and all content pages on the subdomain, would be a lesser solution? Thanks.0 -
Suggestions for a SEO Review
I think it would be beneficial to have a third party seo review of the network of sites my team and I manage and was wondering if any of you had suggestions for what sort of tests should be done or that we should expect to see done during one of these reviews. We are a small team who has varying seo experience and have been working hard to make improvements to our sites in the past year. Most of our sites have been completely overhauled in the last 12-16 months and seo work that had not been done in the past has been setup, along with some corrections that may have been harming seo. We believe we are on the right track and have learned a good amount about seo in that time, but it would be nice to have some "expert" feedback outside of our office to get a clearer picture on anything we may be missing or some suggested improvements. A sort of double check on the work we have done.

Redirect posts from a wordpress.com blog over to a self-hosted blog
Hi All I started a wordpress.com blog with a few posts on it, and these have been shared using social media so links to these exist on Facebook and Twitter. I've decided that its going to be better and more effective to have the blog on my primary domain. How would I setup a redirect from the wordpress.com blog to my self hosted blog? Normally I'd write a .htaccess file but I'm unable to do that over at wordpress.com. I can't even see an option to install plugins, otherwise I would have used the "Redirector" plugin.

Server cache and SEO
I have a question about server cache and seo. For example. www.chanel.com.cn , the server is in US, and uses China Cache to improve local Chinese users access speed, so what do you think this way will work for search engines spiders too? when a spider is crawlling the website, does the content it crawl on US server or China cache? what's best practice for those kind of SEO on server side? thanks Boson

Critique My Site For SEO
Hi Everyone, I was wondering if someone might critique my site and let me know what you think. I've done pretty much everything I know to do proper seo for my site. I'd love to hear some critiques about what I am doing wrong. I'm not sure if my titles are okay, being that they are similar amongst pages. The other thing is that for all the javascript buttons on the top I have no followed them since they don't have any anchor text. The way google will crawl my page is through the links in the footer. I was thinking of moving them throughout the body of the page since I hear google isn't giving as much weight to footer links. I also wanted to hear what you think about putting a blog on my site and updating with fresh content as opposed to creating a separate blog and then linking back to my website with anchor text. Thanks for all the help. And glad to be a member Bill
