Keyword Research: How best to target keywords without using a region as part of the search query.
-
When doing keyword research and trying to rank for a keyword. I am wondering if we need to localize the query by adding a city to it. For example Phoenix Web Design vs. just targeting web design since Google is localizing search results now.
Then when creating content and optimizing the site do we just put the keyword in the title and page content or do we also add the region/city to the keyword phrase?
Any insight would be appreciated.

You are looking at two different types of queries, but yes, you should focus on having the city name plus the product. While Google does localize results based on IP and personalized preferences, it is not not completely independent of keyword optimization.
Another way to think about this is that, lets say that Google only took into consideration the IP of the user versus what the keyword the user typed into the query. How would Google know where you are local to? It is partially due to the keywords you have on the page related to your location.
You should be able to optimize for both your location and product by using a combination of the keyword (and variants of it) and the city
See what the most common term using KW research and then vary off of that. So if Houston Plumbers is the main keyword you can use that and variants of it. (Plumbers in Houston, Plumbers near Houston, Dependable Houston Based Plumbers etc).
I have seen pages that I have optimized using this methodology on large scale Yellow Page type sites for a number of products/services and had the page rank on Page 1 for both types of searches such as "Dallas Plumber" (locality plus product service) and "Plumber" (product/service only). Obviously, your mileage may vary depending on the competition, but, the basic message is that you are going the right direction when targeting locality + product/service vs just service alone. The error in your case would be to leave out the location information.
Good luck.

For your research, you can use the new Keyword Planner in Google Adwords and leave out the region to see how many searches for that term regionally. So, for nail salon Tucson, you can set the Targeting for USA, Tucson AZ or for that DMA OR SMSA, etc. (DMA is just a branded SMSA by Nielsen). I like to look at both with and without the region identifier just to have an idea as to how people are searching. This will teach you what will work if you use enough terms with it.
Now, when it comes to optimizing, there are multiple considerations and I am going to _generalize._First, if it is a situation where you can utilize the 7 pack or whatever pack, you first need to insure you are optimized locally. Then, if you have a url that you are wanting to be in that, you will want one in the organic search not associated with maps (so you need two different urls with different content but the same city identifier). For your title tag do not do Nail Salon Tucson | Tucson Nail Salon | Salon Tucson, etc. Use the city only once there. Then, be sure you do not overdo the city any more than you do the keyword. (KW stuffing).
Also, today only I am giving away two bonus tips and a set of ginzu knives to the first ... (Just kidding, no knives). For the page you want to show in the 7 pack I suggest having the Google map API in that page with address, etc. and I urge you to make sure you have good photos with exif data showing lat/long, etc. For the photos your alt text should have a location identifier and I would suggest an H-1 with a location identifier.
Hope that helps you out,
Robert
Edit, I forgot to add, if you are not using structured data, start.

Hireawiz, You're better off adding your place name and keyword in the title tag and body. It's going to help you rank better for the query whether or not the searcher includes a place name.

How to get local search volumes?
Hi Guys, I want to get search volumes for "carpet cleaning" for certain areas in Sydney, Australia. I'm using this process: Choose to ‘Search for new keyword and ad group ideas’. Enter the main keywords regarding your product / service Remove any default country targeting Specify your chosen location (s) by targeting specific cities / regions Click to ‘Get ideas’ The problem is none of the areas, even popular ones (like north sydney, surry hills, newtown, manly) are appearing and Google keyword tool, no matches. Is there any other tools or sources of data i can use to get accurate search volumes for these areas? Any recommendations would be very much appreciated. Cheers

Title & Keywords
Hi Quick question on arrangement of keywords in titles. I know the order isn't so important anymore, but would there be a real issue if I want to rank for 'Henry Xtra' but my title reads 'Numatic Henry Xtra Vacuum Cleaner' Rather than 'Henry Xtra Vacuum Cleaner' ?? Will it really make much difference? Thank you!

What HREF should be used to target the market of the foreigners?
Usually, foreigners use a local computer (system language), on a local google but are searching in their native language for topics related with their native language. It's a mess for us and google it seems. In example, if a venezuelan person living in France (Paris), on a french AZERTY computer (not literally... 🙂 there is no such thing as a french computer), on Google.fr, search for a venezuelan arepa recipe using the keyword "receta arepa" in spanish of course, he is expecting the result to be in spanish. How could we optimize our pages with HREF or other tricks to rank as high as possible with that configuration? This is obviously just an example, but it represents the problem I am facing.

How to Best Target Two Keyword Phrases for a Business Directory
Our client has medical centers all over the US and we rank really well for the term "DIALYSIS CENTER" as well as all the major markets "DIALYSIS CENTER LOS ANGELES", etc. We need to add in a Second Keyword Phrase of "CKD CENTER" (which is an alternate term for the same medical center). Should we change all the TITLE, H1, etc that we have done to a COMBINED term of "CKD DIALYSIS CENTER" or "DIALYSIS CKD CENTER" and all the local market variations? We can't create 2 pages for one business in the directory, but we're not sure the right way to make sure that the pages are now targeted for 2 terms. Thanks in advance for any help & advice!!!!

Why does my home page show up in search results instead of my target page for a specific keyword?
I am using Wordpress and am targeting a specific keyword..and am using Yoast SEO if that question comes up.. and I am at 100% as far as what they recommend for on page optimization. The target html page is a "POST" and not a "Page" using Wordpress definitions. Also, I am using this Pinterest style theme here http://pinclone.net/demo/ - which makes the post a sort of "pop-up" - but I started with a different theme and the results below were always the case..so I don't know if that is a factor or not. (I promise .. this is not a clever spammy attempt to promote their theme - in fact parts of it don't even work for me yet so I would not recommend it just yet...) I DO show up on the first page for my keyword.. however.. instead of Google showing the page www.mywebsite.com/this-is-my-targeted-keyword-page.htm Google shows www.mywebsite.com in the results instead. The problem being - if the traffic goes only to my home page.. they will be less likely to stay if they dont find what they want immediately and have to search for it.. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Exact keyword URL or not?
Hi all, I have a quick question about the proper use of permalinks. Let's say that I have a website about sports and I want to create an internal page dedicated to shoes. I know that the keyword "shoe" has 15.000 monthly visits, while the keyword "shoes" has 1.000 monthly visits. How do I have to name the internal page? http://www.example.com/shoe or http://www.example.com/shoes (with a final 's')? I would think that by naming the URL http://www.example.com/shoes, the search engine would consider that page for the keywords "shoe" and "shoes", but I am not sure about it. Should I create a URL that only focuses on one specific keyword ("shoe", in this example) or a URL that may encompass more than one keyword ("shoe" and "shoes")? I hope this is clear. Thank you for your time and help. All best, Sal

Local Search without the user typing local?
Hi, I'm a somewhat regionally based voip provider for businesses. So I'm not interested in getting the #1 ranking for voip, but I'd like to get the top for my region. So in this case asheville voip and related searches. However, I know that alot of users in Asheville are not typing in Asheville voip when they google. They're just typing in voip or free voip, or cisco voip. Here's my Google Insight Search: http://www.google.com/insights/search/#q=voip&geo=US-NC&date=today%2012-m&cmpt=q So what I was thinking about doing was in addition to my main site. Building several smaller 'educational based sites' about the benefits of VOIP. Based on google insights something like ashevillevoipphone.com. And use it to capture leads and link to my main site. So my question is this: Is this a good strategy? If people in Asheville are just typing in voip phone, will ashevillevoipphone.com automatically have a better chance at a higher ranking? Thanksd David
