New website and new domain
-
Hi,
We have a domain with current e-commerce site on, about 5 years old.
We have a new website being built with a different company and a new domain name.
We are transferring our old domain over to new provider and 301'ing the domain to new domain.
However, we can not take the current website with us, so we lose all our links/pages etc..
How important would it be to take a wrap of our current website to keep all the pages alive?
Is there anything we can do so oldurl.com/brand/tshirt/ doesnt lose its rank? Can we 301 individual pages if we dont have the actual website? Just the domain name.
Any help be great.
Thanks

Hi,
We are not using the same domain name as its not user friendly. It is brandname-online.com rather than brandnameonline.com or brandnameonline.co.uk. Its a pain in the arse for emails, telling people over the phone and general stuff regardless of the SEO side of it. Many people dont use the -
We own the domain name but we can not take the website. So my thinking was that if we cant take the website, then we cant take all the links we have out there that go to anything other than the root domain brandname-online.com.? Is this correct?
My problem is I dont think we can 301 all the individual products pages (some of which will have sold out anyways) to the new website? Rather we can just 301 the current domain to our new domain? Do I have that wrong?
In brief...
We have a website and a domain name
We can not take the website itself
We CAN take the domain nameWe have bought a new domain name
We plan on 301'in the current domain to the new domainDo we have any work around for individual pages on current domain to get them to the new domain ? Or will our 301 on the current domain send all traffic to current site to our new websites homepage?
THanks

Howdie,
While I've gotten much better at technical SEO due to necessity over the last 4 years, I still don't consider it my "forte." That being said...Are you maintaining ownership of the old domain or have you sold it? If you still own the old domain, I dont see any reason why you can't 301-redirect individual pages from the old domain to the new domain. Moz.com just went through this scenario...quite successfully it seems. If you aren't maintaining ownership of the old domain, I think that was a mistake and agree with Lesley. Hold on for the ride because it's about to get ugly.
Sorry, I don't mean to be negative, but domain migrations are scary even for the best in the business. If there's any way in hell to do it, 301 your old pages to new "equivalent" pages on the new domain. Even if you do that, hold on for the ride. It will still most probably be ugly for a few months.
Good wishes and I hope all goes well!

Why are you not using the same domain name? I think you are going to have ranking problems and customer trust issues by changing the domain name.
On the other hand since you own the domain, I would run a tool like screaming frog on it to spider it. Then when you move the hosting, write 301 redirects from all of the old products and pages to the new corresponding one.
But if there is any chance that you can keep the 5 year old domain and it is not penalized, I would. Domain trust is an important factor.

Seperating Different Parts Of The Website
Hi There, I have a client with two parts to his business both for different types of customer with different language and copy needed. At the moment they have one website and I am trying to figure out the most search engine friendly way to present these different types. So for example if a client came in looking for service A, he would see the home page for service A and if he came in looking for service B he would come across the home page for service B. I know I could have seperate service pages for each service he provides, but I think it would be off putting to come to a home page of a site and see completely unrelated services on one page. I hope I am explaining myself here. As far as I can see the options are:- subdomains for servicea.examplesite.com, serviceb.examplesite.com and a split page (see attachement) where you click which you are interested in (don't like this idea) seperate websites a home page which shows all the services (too confusing) Any advice would be most grateful. Moving servers which means moving ip address but using the same URL. Would it harm the website's SEO?
Hello everyone, The server (in-house) which we use to host our website is a bit old. We are using CDN77 for our static content. What if I move all our website to the CDN service? meaning I use their storage capability and just have our url point to the IP address they provide. Would that hurt our rankings?

Website Drops Some Traffic after Redesign. What's Happening?
What it is NOT: No Link was broken. I have used Moz, Screaming Frog, Excel, etc - there are not broken links. We have not added spammy links. We kept the same amount of links and content on the homepage - with an exception of 1 or 2. All the pages remained canonical. Our blog uses rel=prev rel=next, and each page is canonicalized to itself. We do not index duplicated content. Our tags are content="noindex, follow" We are using the Genesis Framework (we were not before.) Load time is quicker - we now have a dedicated server. Webmaster tools has not reported any crawl report problems. What we did that should have improved our rankings and traffic: Implemented schema.org Responsive design Our bounce rate is down - Average visit length is up. Any ideas?

Parallax websites - good for SEO?
A client of mine is redesigning their site using a vertical Parallax & upon doing some research I've stumbled across Drew Barrymore's site: http://flowerbeauty.com/ - which also uses Parallax. What I like in particular is that the site changes URLs as you scroll down. If you go direct to one of those URLs you'll notice unique meta data (albeit poorly optimised). All pages are indexed fine in Google (https://www.google.com/#bav=on.2,or.r_cp.r_qf.&fp=f8873f78dfbb8c5e&q=site:flowerbeauty.com) I'm just wondering if this is considered ok as the user experience is good and they're not doing anything manipulative, however, there's duplicate content and a potential case of cloaking at hand. I think this approach may be ok for my client for a product features page or a global office locations page since I can break up the sections nicely and split a really long page featuring a lot of content into separate URLs. Whereas Flower Beauty have done it across the whole site... i.e. one page of HTML = the whole site. What do you guys think?

Http://www.domain.com/services/city or http://www.domain.com/city
Hi, I have a website created on a WordPress Platform. My site is in the "Service" industry and we perform the same service for many different "cities." My question pertains to the Navigation Bar and SEO. Is it better to have a "Service" tab on the navigation bar - that has sub navigation that lists all the cities on a drop down menu. When this happens the URL string looks like http://www.domain.com/service/city The other choice would be to create individual TABS on the NAV bar, by doing this the URL string would look - http://www.domain.com/city . I could be wrong, but I am assuming the http://www.domain.com/city is better than http://www.domain.com/services/city for SEO purposes, ....if I am correct is there a way to make SUB Menu URLS appear as http://www.domain.com/city ? Any input as always would be appreciated best regards, Jimmy

Website redesign testing environment
An external company is redesigning our website. They have a draft version active in a folder on their website to enable us to view it (example: www.externalcompanywebsite.com/ourwebsite/). There is no permission required to view the website, anyone with the url could just go there. I am not sure if they're using the robots.txt to block crawlers, or if they're blocking specific ip addresses. If the engines are allowed to crawl their website and they index pages of our draft website, does that affect our website negatively in the future once we host it on our domain?
