Building an optimised friendly website
-
We are in the process of having a new website built and was wondering what factors do we need do we need to instruct our web company to include, at the build phase, to ensure that we can easily optimise it for SEO purposes. They have designed us a previous site that has excessive duplicate URLs and they haven’t given us access to the code so we can’t add 301 redirects etc and would like to avoid this in the future. I look forward to hearing from you

First off in my opinion you should always have full control over your site.
First of all, depending on what's the purpose of the site, find a good CMS which will allow you to manage your site.
I'd suggest you to read the following in order to have an idea of how things should be put in place in a SEO perspective

http://moz.com/blog/the-web-developers-seo-cheat-sheet-2013-edition
These three resource should give you a good understanding of best practices and things to consider in order to create a search engine friendly website.
Also check out webmaster tools help to find information about more specific and technical info.
If you have any Q's let me know.

Most modern day Content Management Systems handle this. Talk to your developer and see what system they are using to develop your site. Encourage them to go with one of the more popular ones. I have used Wordpress and Joomla in the past. Both are Optimized for SEO, and are extremely flexible in what they can do and how they look. They both have flexible backend systems which will allow you to add or change pages, or put in redirects, etc. If the CMS themselves can not do it there are usually add ons which can. Good Luck

Disadvantages of Migrating Website to New URL
Hi There, I am currently struggling with the ranking of my website. No matter how many initiatives I try (backlinking, blog commenting, social posting, etc.) I can't seem to make any progression in Google Search. I've done competitive metrics through Open Site Explorer and can't seem to really find the reason why my site is not ranking as well as my competitors. The only one possible glaring element I've thought about is my website URL. This company is in the heating and cooling industry and majority of my competitors have either "heating" or "cooling" or both in their website URL's but mine does not. Does anyone have any thoughts or recommendations on if changing my URL and then redirecting my current URL would be a step in the right direction help me to climb the rankings in Google Search? Thanks!

Disavowed links, updated website etc - still no ranking improvements
Hi, Could anyone take a look at www.artificialgrass4u.co.uk - a few years ago it used to rank highly for 'artificial grass' ... then when Google rolled out its algorithms punishing websites with poor links it lost all it's rankings. We've disavowed almost all of the bad links, and have been adding new optimised content etc over the past few months but rankings still haven't improved. Is there anything I'm missing? Thanks

How do I avoid duplicate content and page title errors when using a single CMS for a website
I am currently hosting a client site on a CMS with both a Canadian and USA version of the website. We have the .com as the primary domain and the .ca is re-directed from the registrar to the Canadian home page. The problem I am having is that my campaign produces errors for duplicate page content and duplicate page titles. Is there a way to setup the two versions on the CMS so that these errors do not get produced? My concern is getting penalized from search engines. Appreciate any help. Mark Palmer

Impact of website redesign when changing to wordpress
Agency designed website and not sure what platform was used. Are now working minor redesign of site but wants to do so in word press. I don't have any problem with word press but don't want to start over ranking for key phrases. I don't want to change URL from mysite.com for the home page. What is the right way to make sure this is done correctly. I could not find a resource on the site. I don't mind researching this but am not sure what to search for to find info. Thanks
