Effect Of Restoring Old Website After Implementing 301 Redirects
-
After redesigning my old Drupal website and launching a new "improved" Wordpress version the new version is performing badly. Ranking is poor and conversions don't occur. I realize that my new design is bad (no call to action, poor structure, text heavy). New business inquiries have ceased. The site contains 450 pages.
After spending $25,000 and a year of my life I see the new version is not an improvement!
What would be the effect of reinstating the old version of the site and doing 301 redirects back to it? Would the old rankings be restored?
I need to decide whether I should revert or focus on fixing flaws in the improved design.
Any thoughts??
Thanks,
Alan -
Hi Chris:
Thanks for your response.
301 redirects were implemented properly. The redirects were to pages that contained the same content as the original ones.
Previously out of 50 target phrases maybe 15 were in Google's top ten ranking. Now maybe 3 are.
You are probably right, no going back need to focus on improving the Wordpress site.
Thanks,

- I'm not getting a sense that you dealt properly with the transition from the old site to the new one. Did you look at the old site's back links and the search traffic it received and make decisions on the 301s that had to be implemented? If not read these:
- Moving your site - Webmaster Tools Help
- Redirection - SEO Best Practices - Moz
- 301 Redirect Relevance
The things you're talking about aren't the typical topics involved in transitioning from an old site to a new one. It may be best to relax a bit, make the decision to move forward with the new site and begin the process of learning the SEO process. The benefit of using a wordpress site is that you can do most everything you need to do yourself, where your Drupal site wasn't that friendly. Still, you'll have to understand what's what, as far as SEO, and proceed in an orderly fashion. A good place to begin is with The SEO Guide From Moz. You can still evolve the site into the one you want it to be but that won't happen by accident--you're going to have to develop your search marketing knowledge and apply it wisely--it's what your competitors are doing, you've just got to learn to do it better than they are. Moz is a good place to figure out how to do that.
If I've misunderstood, and you're more advanced than that

Thanks Chris:
The URL is www.nyc-officespace-leader.com
On an positive note the following is pretty good:
-Code validates
-Site speed is fastThe following is weak:
-Yoast has not yet been uses to optimize for keywords on the vast bulk of the 500 pages
-The way CDN on Amazon has been set up, Google only sees photo filename as alphanumeric tags. Also, I can't edit more than the first ALT tag of photos. The ALT tag repeats on each photo. More than 800 of 1100 images have yet to be indexed. Out of 290 property listings, 110 have yet to be indexed. CDN (Amazon) was supposed to be an improvement. It is turning into a nightmare. DOn't know if it is contributing to the drop in rank.
-My developer did not use useful ALT tags in the header. My name is used for two images. Very wasteful use of SEO real estate.
-In terms of general design, it looks aesthetic but I don't think it is clear to the visitor what they need to do. Very weak design. A nightmare, and an expensive one at that!!Am I missing something really obvious about the site?
THANKS!!!

Kingalan,
If you had reason to leave the old site behind, those reasons will still be there if you return to it. Without knowing any more than what you've said, I'd lean towards keeping the new site, making sure all the transitional SEO tasks were taken care of when you moved to the new site and just press hard on optimizing/marketing the new wordpress. Did you make sure you followed through on all the SEO that had to take place when you moved from the original site?

301 redirecting to anchor points
A client has just given me a list of redirect URLs as requested of them. However, they're wanting to redirect a bunch of pages to various anchor points within the same page. For example: /pages/about might redirect to: /pages/our-story#our-mission And: /pages/history might redirect to: /pages/our-story#history Is there any problem with this? I've never seen or been asked to redirect like this before.

How long does Google take to completely authorise 301 redirect?
Will 301 redirect will have immediate impact once the website or that redirected link got indexed? We have recently redirected few links in the process of link reclamation and ranking dropped few days later. Every link we claimed is related to our topic (matched in content and URL) and they have good DA. Even though why it has happened? What are the general rank dropping factors in the process of link reclamation? Thanks, Satish

Is 1:1 301 redirect required on indexed URL when restructing URL even if the new URL is canonicalized?
Hello folks, We are restructuring some URLS which forms a fair chunk of the content of the domain.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | HB17
These content are auto generated rather than manually created unlike other parts of the website. The same content is currently accessible from two URLs: /used-books/autobiography-a-long-walk-to-freedom-isbn
/autobiography/used-books/a-long-walk-to-freedom-isbn The URL 1 uses the URL 2 as the canonical url and it has worked allright since Moz does
not show the two as duplicate of each other. Google has also indexed the canonical URL although
there is still a few 'URL 1s' which were indexed before the canonical was implemented. The updated URL structure will look like something like this: /used-books/autobiography-a-long-walk-to-freedom-author-name-isbn
/autobiography/used-books/a-long-walk-to-freedom-authore-name-isbn It would be great to have just a single URL but a few business requirement prevents
us from having just the canonical URL only even with the new structure. Since we will still have two URLs to access the same content and we were wondering
whether we will need to do a 1:1 301 redirect on the current URLs or since there will be canonical URL
(/autobiography/used-books/a-long-walk-to-freedom-authore-name-isbn),
we won't need to worry about doing the 1:1 redirect on the the indexed content? Please note that the content will still be accessible from the OLD URL (unless 301ed of course). If it is advisable to do a 1:1 301 redirect this is what we intend to do: /used-books/autobiography-a-long-walk-to-freedom-isbn 301 to
/used-books/autobiography-a-long-walk-to-freedom-author-name-isbn /autobiography/used-books/a-long-walk-to-freedom-isbn 301 to
/autobiography/used-books/a-long-walk-to-freedom-authore-name-isbn Any advice/suggestions would be greated appreciated. Thank you.0 -
301 Redirect from now defunct website?
Hi guys Quick question about 301 redirection between domains. I currently manage a website, lets call it website A. Website A sells a particular product range, however the decision has been made by the powers that be to pull the plug on the business and sell the products previously sold via Website A via another website within the parent companies control.....lets call it Website B. I need to make it clear to customers of Website A that the company no longer operates but want to pass the SEO equity that has been built up over time to the relevant pages on Website B. My plan was to 1. 301 Redirect all key landing pages on Website A to the most relevant pages on Website B 2. Initially keep the website A homepage live but change the message to say "Website A no longer operates, but Website B can help etc. etc." Remove all sub links from navigation. 3. Monitor referral and direct traffic levels and consider 301 redirecting website A homepage to Website B homepage in the long term. My questions: Does this sound like the best approach? If not, what alternatives are there? Will Website A look like a link farm for Website B? I dont want this obviously!

How should we 301 redirecting ecommerce microsite to our larger ecommmerce site? Should we?
We have several microsites (by microsite I mean sites that are basically top-level departments of our main ecommerce site. We continue to run these, without much support, and they do generate a few sales but we simply don't have the resources to grow them or manage them effectively. We have "kicked around" the idea of 301 redirecting them to our main ecommerce site with the idea that any additional SEO value would be greater than the few sales they currently generate. All products that are on our microsites can be found on our main ecommerce site, thus we can redirect products on our microsites to the exact product on our main site. How would you treat these sites? Would you 301 redirect them? If so, how would you do it? What would be some considerations if we decide to 301 redirect? Microsite example: http://www.drinkingstuff.com/ Main site: http://www.prankplace.com/ I would greatly appreciate any tidbits the community could provide us on this. Thanks!
