When Penguins Attack...
-
I'm hoping for a couple of second opinions of my conclusions here before I shoot 60% of our link profile in the head...
a) I've not needed to deal with an angry Penguin before,
b) it's not as black and white as most of the blog posts seem to find.Domain is www.world-text.com
The Penguin Google Says...
● We have no unnatural links warning in WMT
● We have dropped out of the top 50 for all keywords except three. Those three are a couple of pages down.
● We still own page 1 for a brand search (World Text), though we lost the bottom result.
● Overall traffic down 25%, organic down 50%, SERPs impressions down 50-70%I'd love to know where the remaining organic Google traffic is coming from as we currently rank for nothing (useful anyway); the analytics doesn't show the usual off a cliff to nothing, more a few quiet weeks.
Several other players in the sector appear to have been obliterated too - searches on several keywords are a total mess with total unknowns and spam showing up on page 1 SERPs.
Adwords traffic is up markedly which I put down to the mess that is SERPs
Our adwords are nicely optimised and our top keywords are hitting quality scores of >=8, mostly 9 or 10.
Why did the Penguin Peck?...
Simple. Opensiteexplorer should make it blindingly obvious what the issue is.
We have a horrible link profile that I have been muttering about for 18 months or more.
● Long before I joined seems they got a 5,000 search friendly directory submissions package or equivalent
● Sadly not a single one of them was from the long obsolete SEOMoz directories list, or worth keeping.
● Every single last one of them has identical anchor text and description. Still, makes for easy analysis.
● The anchor text used isn't likely to be searched often
"World-Text.com Text Messaging Services"
● 3 of 4 originally submitted sites/directories have since expired, removed links etcFindings
740 judged bad domains:
All the identical anchor text SEO directories
a couple of others picked out as unwanted
the domains serving malwareOnly 235 class Cs in these
144 have 0-2 indexed pages - not useful for a directory!500 judged maybe:
No links found even though in WMT (a lot of these)
down, suspended etc (a lot of these too)
parked
links that are less than ideal but not identically anchored spam.
(for instance someone who had linked to us has had their site scraped and dropped on dozen or more forums including our link)another pass of these in a week or so, just in case some come back to life...
400 judged good (well harmless):
Natural links
real directories
all the assorted alexa like scrapers, domain valuation junk etc.Executing Penguins and other vermin...
Apparently pretending to know nothing doesn't help, so...
● Disavow the three discovered sites serving malware
● Remove where possible every last one of the SEO directory entries avoiding any extorted payment. Track contacts and responses.
● Disavow the rest{Reconsideration request}
I KNOW this is for manual penalties, and we don't have one, BUT I've seen countless sources suggesting reconsideration for Penguin. Really?
Anyway that was far longer than intended, so thanks for making it this far! I look forward to comments!

Hi Matt,
It sounds like you ran Link Detox? If not, then it is possible to get a $50 for two evaluations deal with them that will give you pretty reliable list of bad links to compare to the one you created.
I also suggest you read this Moz Blog article called It's Penguin-Hunting Season: How to Be the Predator and Not the Prey
...and then test a few of your sub-pages that used to rank well at the program used in this article which is called the Penguin Analysis Tool. I say sub-page because it needs a single keyword phrase you want rank that particular page for so it do the anchor text analysis. And that works better on focused sub-pages than on general homepages. $10 will let you fully evaluate two pages and see if the data helps you.
I did a Disavow months ago and got a little recovery, but not 100%. Fortunately I only got nailed for a few keywords that did not convert very well anyways. After testing a few of my own pages in the tool above, I wonder if maybe I Disavowed too many of one type of link and not enough of another type.
About doing a Reconsideration Request. I tried it just for the heck of it after submitting my Disavow. An hour or two later I got an automated email response saying that their was no manual penalty and therefore no action was needed. So it probably doesn't hurt, but evidently doesn't help either. Basically they are for those who get a notice.

Quick question (I'm in the same situation) can you actually file a reconsideration request if you don't have a manual penalty against you? If so- please tell me how as I can't find how-to anywhere and I'm thinking of doing the exact same thing as you.
I disavowed a lot of my links a few weeks before the last penguin update and therefore I'm not sure whether I've simply deleted links that were actually giving us good value.
Sorry for the hijack- I'd just be interested to know!

Is it possible to reverse a G algo update (Penguin/Panda)?
...if yes, how? Can you share resources / blogs / etc... I want to reverse my site's rankings. Here's the gist of it: I recently purchased a website that has 600+ pieces of aged content on it. Domain was ranking great about 10 years ago (1M uniques a year) It apparently got hit by a G algo update in 2012/2013 (Penguin and Panda?), because the rankings have tanked (10 hits a day) In the past two years, the previosu owner published about 100+ off-topic blog posts and it appears been using the site as a PBN. The UX sucks and there's a ton of 404s. (NOTE: I am in the process of removing that content and have cleaned up the 404s). Domain stats: 20+ years old (1998) and DA 32, linking domains 850+, inbound links of 16k+ What I've done: disavow (550 domains), fix all the 404s What I'm doing / about to do: remove spammy content write new/fresh on-topic content update the site UX start a backlink building campaign My questions: is it common to bounce back from a G algo update? is it hard / am I over my head / am I a sucker trying to get the site back alive? are there articles about bouncing back that you can share so I can learn more about this process? Or agencies / consultants, etc that you recommend? what other recommendations / suggestions do you have that would help reverse this 8-year-old penalty?

Penguin 4.0 update: drop in results end of September
Has anyone noticed certain drops in keyword rankings on/around 29 September? Has this to do with the Penguin 4.0 update? I read that this hasn't come "bug-free". Will this be adjusted the upcoming weeks? Or is this drop content-based based on the new algorithms and the content needs to be adjusted/updated?

Penguin 2.0 has hit business
Howdy,
Reporting & Analytics | | MarzVentures
I represent a UK based workwear company called myworkwear.co.uk and our rankings have fallen following Penguin 2.0. We are a relatively small company compared to many competitors and have noticed the arrival of large companies in the serps. Many are not even in the workwear sector and pretty irrelevant which is annoying. We have not received any correspondence from Google, but our fall from grace particularly for the word workwear has been big. Do you think our link profile is an issue? Click here: Link Profile Is it worth emailing Google? We have attempted to remove bad links, is it worth using disavow? My feelings are we should: 1. Email Google via Disavow tool about the links we have already tried to remove with proof of attempt.Go through link profile with fine tooth comb and contact an even wider range of webmasters for link removal. Then email Google via disavow tool (best to try removal via email to websites first).2. Begin to build new content and links, even guest blogging is now coming under scrutiny from Google – There really is no bluffing Google anymore.3. Build site conversion.4. Develop a competition theme (10 years old anniversary) combined with say MyWorkHero, etc. Use this for social networking.5. Increase social networking, but is this experts are predicting this is the next kick up for seo.6. Having improved conversion, trial adwords.7. Continue to develop the site in a structured, non manipulative manner. – Look at it as a good site is a successful site in the eyes of Google and the rewards will follow. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.0 -
Are Panda/Penguin Penalties not Global but only fired for specific Google CCTLDs?
An international portfolio of web sites has been suffering from Panda and Penguin over the last months. Essentially many of the international sites completely disappeared from the top 50 when before we had many Top 5 positions for competitive key words. Today we noticed that it appears that for all this time rankings for local keywords have not been affected for domains outside of the most relevant Google CCTLD for the page. To give an example: Domain.it / Keyword 1 (IT) = Italian Competitive Keyword Google.it: Keyword 1 (IT) April 2012 Position 4

Google.it: Keyword 1 (IT) December 2012 Position --- Google.com: Keyword 1 (IT) April 2012 Position 1
Google.com: Keyword 1 (IT) December 2012 Position 1 Google.de: Keyword 1 (IT) April 2012 Position 3
Google.de: Keyword 1 (IT) December 2012 Position 4 Have other people observed such behavior? Does this give any pointers towards how the recovery strategies should be drafted? We have experienced that the more search volume a keywords has received the harder the Panda/Penguin impact. So one hypothesis could be that because the international Google domains do not receive overly significant traffic for the localized keywords Panda/Penguin protection algorithms are not being applied with the same force. Any thoughts are welcome. /Thomas1 -

Strange traffic - panda, penguin? Screenshots attached.
Hi, I'm unsure if I've been hit by penguin/panda. I've attached screenshots below. The first one is April 1st to today. The second is all of April and the 3rd is 1st June to today. The site was offline at the beginning of July which explains no traffic. My traffic took a dip though on April 6th which as I understand it wasn't a panda/penguin roll out? I then got hardly any traffic for May to mid June. Then the site was offline due to a server problem but when it came back on traffic was the highest it has ever been. Today however I am getting zero search engine traffic? I can't figure out what's going on. Can anyone shed any light on the issue? DTJXE DTJXE Dpj21 qHTpj

Woes in organic ranking... Post Penguin issue?
Hello all, First post here. Site:http://www.symbolphoto.com I'd done a ton of work to get my SEO where it needs to be, however, after looking at my traffic post April 15-22nd, it's gone completely downhill. I don't rank organically, which i'd like for one single term 'b*ston wedding photographer'. What am i missing? I'm assuming Penguin may be a part of this, but i haven't participated in any link schemes... am i being penalized and if so, is it evident why? Help is much appreciated! replace * with o.

Glitch or Penguin?
Hi all, Our queries in GA have bombed, strangely since Penguin. We've gone from 12,000 impressions to none. Traffic is ok, we've not seen a decline. IS this a GA glitch or should we panic? Thanks
