If you discount a subscription when the client links to you, does that classify as a paid link?
-
For example, we all subscribe to MOZ, but if we received a 25% discount on our subscription if we linked back, would that be considered by Google as a paid link, or would it be seen as a sales tool / promotion?

Hi Jonathan
Although Google's guidelines don't explicitly mention "discounts" I do feel this would be considered a paid or manipulated link as the company is offering a monetary benefit in exchange for a link.
Google's Guidelines state that any link that is paid must be disclosed in a machine readable format and nofollowed

Technically, it is a paid link, but how would they know it is? Not really something you need to worry about as long as the "link" is done differently, so they dont leave obvious footprints.
Pretty sure lots of people will disagree with this, but it's the truth.

Basically yes. Any form of payment received in return of a back link is considered a paid link and will be penalized.

Are these links helping
Hi, We have had a few new links for a client and we are hoping that we can get some feedback on whether these have any link juice. We dont want to waste our time with links that dont benefit the website. We have recently receive linek from one website. The site is quite very powerful for the word we try to rank, however the link is kind of wired. This is how it looks like: http://villasdiani.com/?db The webmaster of the site said that he ads (?db) on the end so as we would see on our analytics the traffic from his site.. Also the link is from footer...is this good or it does not have value

Obtaining Links from Forums?
How good is a link from a forum? Do you guys know of any forums in the shopping, jewelry, wedding, or fashion industry that accepts links within their signature or within the post? I know some forums are very strict about this and others allow you to add your link as an incentive to post on their forums. Generally, how effective is this in your opinion and any good recommendations of quality forums?

Total Links vs Ext. Followed Links
Hi I'm fairly new to SEO and SEOMOZ. I've created a campaign for my own site and I've added 3 competitor sites. There are 1,385 total links to my site and a massive 49,450 links to one of my competitor's site. However under "Ext. Followed Links", there are 1,045 to my site and only 911 to the same competitor site. Am I correct that it is the "Ext. Followed Links" which are more important from an SEO point of view as the other links have the "no follow" attribute set? Or have I got this wrong? Thanks James
