Content Marketing for Local Businesses
-
Hey guys!
As someone who works with a number of local businesses (with localized target markets) I find that developing ideas for content marketing can be VERY difficult. I like the idea of creating local guides, local event info etc, but what other ways can we create content for a localized target market? For example: I have an OBGYN client that we'd love to create content for that is related to their niche (women's health), but don't want to promote or create content for national audience. That would seem incredibly wasteful.
Would love to hear ideas on how to create targeted content for a local audience!
Thanks

Hi Ricky,
Egol's suggestion regarding interviews is really a good one and, if done with care, would produce some very high quality content.
Another suggestion: if the medical practice has a blog, how about a weekly or monthly roundup-type post of local women's health/fitness events? Things like marathons, free yoga classes, healthy cooking classes, free lectures on relevant topics, volunteer opportunities, breast cancer fundraisers, etc. If the blogger can set up alerts on things like this, he/she can aggregate the data and then go a step beyond this by adding something fresh to each roundup - a personal perspective on the week's/month's opportunities for better living for local women.
Just one idea, but something that could be added into the mix to improve the usefulness of the website to local women.

I was looking at it from more of a social media / inbound perspective. So, you might show up in the 7th-9th spot from Venice, but you wouldn't get much traffic organically - as you suggested.
One thing that have been successful for me locally is doing interviews with the event organizers. I ask them to post the interview on their social media, and link to it from their website. Most non-profits are more than happy to do that in turn for increased exposure. Running event organizers, especially for new events, are usually open to doing the same. I do this with car dealerships quite often, and pretty much everyone hates car dealerships.
You could do a mixture of local and informational content to get the best of both worlds.

Hi Cody,
I agree that local guides etc. won't do much in the way of building your reputation as an expert, but they are often great ways to attract relevant traffic from your target market while exposing them to your brand and brand value proposition. I know that the competition for local terms is less, but how do you put a local angle on a post relating to "What Age Should Girls Should Start Going to the Gynecologist"? If we create content like that, we'd be competing nationally. I know Google biases search to local business, but not for informational type content, right? That would leave us competing nationally vs top health sites that had content related to the topic. With Google Hummingbird I see less and less impact moving forward on creating content specifically for exact match long tail phrases.
I guess creating informational type content and publicizing the content locally could work, but I don't think we'd have a chance to attract much traffic from search doing that. It would have to be mainly a case of content publicity locally...

The intent for content marketing is to educate your audience, as well as demonstrate yourself as an expert in the field. Writing about the local dog park won't exactly do either for you.
I'd suggest writing about what people are actually interested in in relation to whatever your client does. You can get ideas for content by going through different Women's Health Forums, and Yahoo Answers.
Just doing some quick research I see that there are tons of searches for long tail variations of "How often should I go to the gynecologist." When you boil that down to just your city there is far less, but it is still something women have shown interest in. Just off the top of my head I would suggest writing content for things like "What age should girls start going to the Gynecologist," "What to expect at your Gyno examination" and "When should you go to the Gynecologist."
One of the Chiropractors I work with posted a few videos on a specific treatment he does that not everyone can do a while back. He has had people travel great distances to get that treatment from him, and it even helped him get a foot in the door to be a Chiropractor for some of the Winter Olympic athletes. All from creating content he knew his readers would like to see.

Women's health issues can vary geographically. Those of concern in your area can be different from those in other areas.
In most communities there are a few physicians, professors, social service workers, who are experts on this type of topic. They might be found at universities, hospitals, physicians offices, home health providers, county/city government.
You could develop a content plan that includes interviews with several of these types of professionals, each sharing his/her expertise on one or more issues in your area. The physicians or administrators at your client's office might be able to help select these people for a number of topics. Perhaps they would want to do the interview instead of you because they are conversant on these topics and familiar with these people.
The professional being interviewed can be a source of the questions because they know the issues and know what message they want to get out. This might even be done by questionnaire, asking them to identify a few important issues and elaborate. IMPORTANT: Each interview should conclude with "where to get help / more information" on the issues covered.
Their website could become a rich source of information. It could have charts/maps/time lines showing issues compared among age groups and other demographic variables. It might be referenced by government agencies, schools, health care organizations. If done superbely it would be a real white hat for the client to wear.

Change of content
Hello, When you do a major change of content on a page I know it takes time to start seeing some results in terms of ranking. Let's say I make a change today expecting to see the first results of that change 2 months from now. Let's say in a month I decide to add some content and make again some minor changes. Do I have to wait another 2 months starting on the date I made my 2 nd changes to see some results or will I see the results of the 1 change as originally planned 2 months after my major content change ? Thank you,

Content Below the Fold
Hi I wondered what the view is on content below the fold? We have the H1, product listings & then some written content under the products - will Google just ignore this? I can't hide it under a tab or put a lot of content above products - so I'm not sure what the other option is? Thank you

Content Audit Questions
Hi Mozzers Having worked on my companies site for a couple of months now correcting many issues, im now ready to begin looking at a content review, many areas of the site contain duplicate content, the main causes being 1. Category Page Duplications
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | ATP
e.g.
Widget Page Contains ("Blue Widget Extract")
Widget Page Contains ("Red Widget Extract")
Blue Widget Page Contains ("Same Blue Widget Extract")
Red Widget Page Contains ("Same Red Widget Extract") 2. Product Descriptions
Item 1 (Identical to item 2 with the exception of a few words and technical specs)
Item 2 Causing almost all the content on the site to get devalued. Whilst i've cleared all moz errors and warnings im certain this is causing devaluation of most of the website. I was hoping you could answer these questions so I know what to expect once i have made the changes. Will the pages that had duplicate content recover once they possess unique content or should i expect a hard and slow climb back? The website has never receive any warnings from Google, does this mean recovery for penalties like duplicate content will be quicker Several pages rank on page 1 for fairly competitive keywords despite having duplicate content and keyword spammy content. What are the chances of shooting myself in the foot by editing this content? I know I will have to wait for google to crawl the pages before i see any reflection in the changes, but how long after google has crawled the page should I get a realistic idea of how positive the changes were? As always, thanks for you time!0 -
How does google recognize original content?
Well, we wrote our own product descriptions for 99% of the products we have. They are all descriptive, has at least 4 bullet points to show best features of the product without reading the all description. So instead using a manufacturer description, we spent $$$$ and worked with a copywriter and still doing the same thing whenever we add a new product to the website. However since we are using a product datafeed and send it to amazon and google, they use our product descriptions too. I always wait couple of days until google crawl our product pages before i send recently added products to amazon or google. I believe if google crawls our product page first, we will be the owner of the content? Am i right? If not i believe amazon is taking advantage of my original content. I am asking it because we are a relatively new ecommerce store (online since feb 1st) while we didn't have a lot of organic traffic in the past, i see that our organic traffic dropped like 50% in April, seems like it was effected latest google update. Since we never bought a link or did black hat link building. Actually we didn't do any link building activity until last month. So google thought that we have a shallow or duplicated content and dropped our rankings? I see that our organic traffic is improving very very slowly since then but basically it is like between 5%-10% of our current daily traffic. What do you guys think? You think all our original content effort is going to trash?

Duplicate Content For E-commerce
On our E-commerce site, we have multiple stores. Products are shown on our multiple stores which has created a duplicate content problem. Basically if we list a product say a shoe, that listing will show up on our multiple stores I assumed the solution would be to redirect the pages, use non follow tags or to use the rel=canonical tag. Are there any other options for me to use. I think my best bet is to use a mixture of 301 redirects and canonical tags. What do you recommend. I have 5000+ pages of duplicate content so the problem is big. Thanks in advance for your help!

Pages with Little Content
I have a website that lists events in Dublin, Ireland. I want to provide a comprehensive number of listings but there are not enough hours in the day to provide a detailed (or even short) unique description for every event. At the moment I have some pages with little detail other than the event title and venue. Should I try and prevent Google from crawling/indexing these pages for fear of reducing the overall ranking of the site? At the moment I only link to these pages via the RSS feed. I could remove the pages entirely from my feed, but then that mean I remove information that might be useful to people following the events feed. Here is an example page with very little content

Local SEO - Business name and web address different
Howdy Local Experts, I'm hoping you can clear up something for me.. I'm setting up some places for a company that's spread across 5 cities. I am creaitng 5 separate locations for this. The company name is not the same as the website name. All the SEO efforts are for the website name ( the brand ) not the parent company name., so... 1. When creating the places do I enter the business name in "company/organisation" and put the brand name in the web site field? Or is it better for seo to have the brand name here as the company name too? 2. Are all 5 listings more or less going to be the same except for the address and phone numbers? I suppose unique photos etc for each location is better here? 3. When creating citations i am essentially going to be building 5 separate "links", one for each place is that correct. So adding the specific location details into the matching state and city business directories etc? 3. The exact business category doesn't accurately show up in the list. Do i select the closest thing here or create custom categories to better match the business. Apologies for the lenghty question, Derek
