Paid Yahoo Listings - I Need This, Right?
-
With the help of a 3rd party contractor, our company has been claiming and curating local listings for several months across dozens of advised platforms. After months of nightmares with Yahoo support, I see that they no longer support free basic local listings and you must buy enhanced listings at $9.95.
I'm correct in proposing this to my supervisors, right? We have 70 locations so that's a pretty penny (and have already dropped some funds on our initial efforts), but isn't this a necessity? Not just because it's a top 3 search engine, that it's a major part of the local ecosystem, but that they also have partnered with Yelp and are ramping up their local search efforts?
I know there are new tools out there right now (Moz Local, Yext, Locu, etc.), but I only need Yahoo and they don't fit in with our needs at this time.
Please advise - thank you!
-
I'm not in the tool, so I'll leave that to those in the know. However, to clarify you can still do free basic listings. So maybe that's what they're doing, and that's what you're seeing.
I'm referring to whether I should pay for listings so that I can get the specialized attention I need for 70 locations that are giving me grief. So it's within that frame that we are weighing whether they carry enough influence to be worth it.

Hi Sarah.
Fast response! Thanks.
When I use the check listing functionality, I see Yahoo listed on the bottom right.

Donna, Yahoo isn't included in Moz Local. Unless I'm missing something ...
Update: I based that on the page where they list their partners, which does not include Yahoo. I guess even though they aren't a partner, you can populate your Yahoo listings with this tool? If so, I apologize for the misinformation.
-
Wondering why the new Moz Local tool bothers to include Yahoo then? Why don't we just drop it entirely if "they are not a major player in local search"? Are there other players listed in the Moz Local tool that we can ignore as well?
-
Thank you Miriam - good stuff! I did feel strongly until I started asking around. Now I'm on the fence. I'm getting the impression they aren't a big enough player to justify the investment, although I initially thought the recent Yahoo announcements meant this could change. Maybe I assumed too much too soon. Maybe we wait it out. The fact that it's a top search engine also had me assuming hands-down this was a necessity. Glad to have a place to throw out these questions.

Hi Sarah,
Good discussion going on here. If you feel you need to pay for support, then I suppose you'll have to pay for it. I want to add to this discussion a recommendation that you check out a couple of posts of 2013 by Nyagoslav Zhekov on the state of Yahoo! Local. Their local product definitely has some issues:http://www.ngsmarketing.com/yahoo-starts-pushing-yext-powerlistings-white-labeled-aggressively/

Hope these provide some extra food for thought!

Hi Bryan,
I am currently using that option. Unfortunately, they no longer offer customer service to free listings and I require a lot of assistance. Of my 70 locations, there are many, many that need help. For one, the PINs our locations are receiving for verification purposes aren't even working. Other listings are rejected, pending forever, etc. and I have no idea why and have no means for finding out.
Thanks,
Sarah -
Greetings Sarah,Yahoo tries to get you to pay for listings, but you can still create a free listing and claim it with a post card (just like g-local).
It is hidden on their page, but you can find it here: https://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/local-listings/
Bottom-right hand option is what you'll want.

Cool. Thanks.

Hey Sarah,
If you are targeting Apple, go with Yelp and/or Yext. They are the major players in the Apple world.
-
Jimmy,
How about Apple Maps? That's one thing I haven't looked at ...
-
Yep, we've done all of that.
Just making sure I've done my due diligence. And I was just advised by a trusted source that purchasing those Yahoo listings is, essentially, ill-advised.
This is why I love Moz.
-
Looking at that info I would hands down go with Google Local. Then YP, Yelp, Superpages, Foursquare (all which offer free listings that will get you the results they are referring to.)
Yahoo Local isn't really a player at all with Apple and that is something to think about.
I just don't see why paying Yahoo is worth it. They are not a major player in local search. Nobody I know uses them. Even the people I know who use Yahoo mail don't use them for search.

I don't see why you "NEED" Yahoo. We don't use them for our clients and other SEO companies that I am close with don't use them. Why do you feel you need to use Yahoo and pay them? Google has the majority of search traffic. Yahoo is just a little blip in comparison. I am curious as to why you feel so strongly? Especially after you stated "After months of nightmares with Yahoo support, I see that they no longer support free basic local listings and you must buy enhanced listings at $9.95."

Adding Multiple Country Locations for Google Business Listings
Hi Moz community, I hope everyone is well. I would like to ask for your advice on how to show a Google Business listing in both the UK and US for our brand. I understand that you can add multiple locations to your Google listing under the 'Manage Locations' tab but I wasn't quite sure how it worked in practice. I have a couple of questions below: If we have 2 registered locations/offices (one in the UK and one in the US) are we able to create 2 separate locations that will show our business listing correctly in the right-hand margin when people search for our brand in the US and UK respectively? If so, when a user finds our business listing in the US, are we able to serve them our US website version when they click the 'Website' button, as opposed to showing them our UK website? Our US website has been created as a sub-directory from our main UK site and can be seen as: www.example.com/us/ I hope someone is able to help, and thank you in advance.

Categories for Google My Business pages - do they need to match terms on website?
I have a chiropractor client with three locations. Because the Chiropractor category is very competitive, whomever originally set-up their GMB pages elected to use the category "Pain Control Clinic" for two locations, and "Medical Center" for the third location. They rank badly for these categories. Their website does not contain many signals for pain control or medical center; it is very much chiropractor focused. Is this something Google takes into consideration when deciding how to rank GMB pages?

Indivdual Property Listings
In Missouri real estate once a home hits our MLS it sydicates out all over the world. The question is this: How do I help each listing rank high organically over trulia, zillow, realtor and nationally owned companies such as Remax or Bershire Hathaway. We are a local firm who dominates our market and our website is the highest ranked in the area. The listings are not. Thoughts?

Local Search and Schema.org - Do I need to tag up the "same as" Property to all my citations to help with local rankings?
Hi All, We have implemented Schema.og on our website and this also includes the local business schema for all of our branches. However I've read an article (see below ) which says we should also be doing "same as " property and linking this to ALL of our citations such as google plus page , yelp , bing places, city search etc etc as this will help with citations. I am wondering if anyone has done this ? - And if so , has this helped with local rankings etc - I don't really want to invest the extra costs to get this done if I can't find anywhere that says its made a difference - The article from whitespark - says - "when you create new citations for your business (or for your client’s), it’s a waiting game hoping that Google and the other search engines will find your new citations quickly and make the connection between those listings, the business, and the website. The “sameAs” property can help make that process much quicker _and _easier. Schema.org explains that the “sameAs” property is used along with the “URL of a reference Web page that unambiguously indicates the item's [or business’] identity.” By using the “sameAs” property in your NAP schema markup, you can tell search engines that the business you’ve marked up is the same one found at a certain citation URL Of course, Google+ isn’t the only important citation source. There’s also Bing Places, Facebook, Yelp, Citysearch and a few others. The nice thing about many schema.org properties is that you can use them multiple times in your markup." I am wondering what peoples thoughts were and whether they has implemented this and if so , did it help ? thanks Pete | [sameAs](http://schema.org/sameAs) | URL | URL of a reference Web page that unambiguously indicates the item's identity. Help tracking phone number calls from Google Plus & Yahoo Local
Hi, I own a business in United States and serving multiple locations around US. I have listings for all my locations in Google Business as well as in Yahoo Local. To track the phone calls that are made through Google & Yahoo, I have provided a 2 different phone numbers in these listings in order to track it effectively. Recently, I read that even the tracking phone numbers will rise an inconsistent NAP in Google local ranking factors. If such is the case, how can can effectively track the phone calls separately from these business listing? Does anyone have any better idea for this? Thank you,

Listing a physical address on an ecommerce website?
Hey Mozzers! Got a question for you. I’ve been assigned my first ecommerce client. He doesn’t want to list his physical business location, as he fears that including his address will hurt him on a national level (he ships all over the world). He’s not particularly interested in ranking locally, although he wouldn’t mind it. He only wants to show a PO box address. Will this help or hurt him? I believe it’s the latter. Also, he has 16 shipping points across the U.S. Is it helpful to add these cities and states to the site? Thanks in advance! -Kanya
