How do I know if I have been hit with a Google penalty
-
How can you tell if you have been hit by the Panda update as I have a Page rank 3 Homepage, several 100 other pages but no page rank is flowing through to these pages they are all zero?
Thanks
-
PageRank is a pretty outdated way of looking at a page's worth, especially because it's updated irregularly, and often fudged / inaccurate. Google realised a while ago that people used PageRank as a metric to buy and sell links, meaning that them making it very accurate was helping fund an industry they very much didn't like.
That said, 2.5 years with no internal PR showing up on any URL seems slightly odd. Do the pages show decent Moz metrics, like Page Authority?
Does the site sit on HTTPS URLs exclusively? At least a little while ago, that used to stop toolbar PR from showing up but it didn't mean that pages wouldn't rank.
It's also possible that the site receives few or no links from elsewhere, meaning that there is not much authority to be passed through the site from the home page or any other target page. Does this seem likely to you, looking at the site's links? As others have said, there could also be internal linking problems that halt the flow of authority, but 2.5 years is a while to show no internal tbPR whatsoever.

Thanks for the replies
Sorry I dont think I have been very clear the pages have not been assigned pagerank
The domain 2.5 years old with several 100 pages
-
Could be your internal structure. Has anything changed or are you just not raising in the search engines as quickly as you would like? Judging by your earlier followup it sounds like more of the later, which would indicate you just need more good links flowing to your sub-pages.
As David said your backlinks probably all point to your homepage so that would be natural for it to rank much higher.
-
The first place to look at is your backlinks. If they all point at your homepage, its natural that it will have a higher pagerank than the subpages.
I doubt it was hit with a penalty, unless you have noticed a large drop in rankings. When you are hit with a manual penalty, Google will notify you via webmaster tools, so be sure to check that or if you dont have an account, set one up.
Also, how is the page interlinking set up? Do you constantly promote linking to your subpages using well placed anchor text? If the home page does not link to other pages, could be Google is not seeing them. Does the site have a sitemap submitted in webmaster tools?
-
Are you just looking at pagerank? Page rank doesn't tend to get update very often (once/twice a year ish) so i wouldn't use it as a metric try Moz's domain & page authority if you are concerned about flow.
quick one here are some of the previous updates to show you:

Hi Guys Thanks for the reply I have run site:ourdomain and the correct number of pages are showing, I have also checked the robot.txt is fine and cannot see any cliff like drop in analytics? Thanks
-
Robert gave some great advice, you can also check here - http://moz.com/google-algorithm-change and see if you have a large cliff like drop in Google analytics. It also depends how long your site has been active etc. as many people cry wolf with updates but it may be other things like robots.txt as Robert mentioned.
-
Have you tried checking what pages you have cached in Google? search site:yourdomain.com and see what results come up. This should give you a good idea if your site is indexed ok. Also check your robots.txt isn't set to no follow.

Google Index Issue - Indexing pages that don't exhist
Hi All, I have noticed a weird issue when performing a search on Google to show me all the pages it is indexing of our site. site:www.one2create.co.uk It brings up most of our website pages but then is also brings up a few HTTPS urls (our site has not been converted to HTTPS yet) but also the URL path, Title, and Meta Description are from one of our clients websites (an Automotive Job site). When clicked they take you to a generic 404 server error page, not our branded 404 page. The site that it has taken the url, title and meta description from is on a different server completely so I don't see how it has even managed to get that information and linked it to our site? Has anyone seen anything like this before? And what is the best way to fix it? We have asked Google to re-index the site but still no luck.

When Googling site:mydomain.com what does listing order tell us?
To find all the pages on my site that are indexed by Google I can search using site:mydomain.com and it gives pages of results. But what does the order of results relate to? Is it page rank or strength? My list of pages doesn't appear to be in order of strength. And it's definitely not by age or alphabetical...

How come this one google places listing is the only one to show up google maps?
Hi there, I found a really weird thing about google places. I'm working on a google places listing optimization for a locksmith company in Houston, TX. When I was searching google maps for "locksmith houston" only one listing came up. However, when searching for "locksmith near houston" 880 results came up. This changes from time to time, but most of the time this one competitor is the only listing that shows up which is really really weird. Anybody has an idea what this competitor did to get rid of the other 879 results and show up alone on google maps??

Google Analytics: advanced segment for hour of day
Cioa from 17 Degrees C cloudy Wetherby UK 🙂 In Google analytics I want to report specifically on Blackberry Mobile traffic next to hour if the day. Whilst this customised report I ripped off did the job @ http://bit.ly/hourdays I only resorted to this after battling with advanced segments thinking I could do the same thing. So my question is please how can I get this report http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc53/zymurgy_bucket/hrs-day-examplecopy_zps4f15d4a1.jpg by building it via advanced segments and not ripping off via http://bit.ly/hourdays Grazie tanto,

Google Penalisation - Any help would be appreciated!
Hi,
Search Behavior | | ChrisHolgate
We’ve recently received a Google notification of unnatural linking along with a confirmation that we're being penalised. There were a few other sites that we owned that perhaps had too many links pointing to our main domain so we trimmed them down and submitted a reconsideration request and got the following back: "Dear site owner or webmaster of http://www.refreshcartridges.co.uk/,
We received a request from a site owner to reconsider http://www.refreshcartridges.co.uk/ for compliance with Google's Webmaster Guidelines.
We've reviewed your site and we still see links to your site that violate our quality guidelines.
Specifically, look for possibly artificial or unnatural links pointing to your site that could be intended to manipulate PageRank. Examples of unnatural linking could include buying links to pass PageRank or participating in link schemes.
We encourage you to make changes to comply with our quality guidelines. Once you've made these changes, please submit your site for reconsideration in Google's search results.
If you find unnatural links to your site that you are unable to control or remove, please provide the details in your reconsideration request.
If you have additional questions about how to resolve this issue, please see our Webmaster Help Forum for support.
Sincerely,
Google Search Quality Team" I want to stress that we have never in the past and do not currently buy any backlinks. The problem that we face now is that our site has been online for best part of a decade, there are thousands of people linking to us and I have absolutely no idea where to start. We don’t use an SEO Company but in the past few months have been using SEOmoz to improve our on-page optimisation. I know it’s a massive ask but if could a member of the SEOmoz community or a staff member quickly take a gander and let us know if anything in particular sticks out like a sore thumb it would mean a great deal to me. Of course, if needed we’ll employ the services of an SEO company but I’m hoping one of you guys will see something immediately obvious that could really help us out! Thanks in advance. Kind regards Chris0 -
New EU Laws governing cookies; will Google Analytics still be usable after May 25th?
Hi, first time I've posted a question, New EU Laws governing cookies; will Google Analytics still be usable after May 25th? - apologies in advance if its already been covered, but I couldn't find any answers when I searched - google search showed someone else ask the question already, but no straight answers were given:- From May 25th the Privacy and Electronic Communications Directive will come in to force which prohibits the use of cookies without informed, prior consent from web users. I've been trying to research to see whether or not this will affect Google Analytics. The Directive seems to be designed to prevent behavioural tracking, rather than web stats, but after reading the directive (with no law experience) I'm fairly confused by what will be prohibited. If anyone has any thoughts on the matter, I'd be very grateful! 🙂

Have Google changed something in Analytics
Hi Mozzers, I have a client that gets loads of traffic and since the 15th February there has been a decrease in New Visitors and an Increse in Returning. Traffic levels are the same. The returning is up and new are down by a long long shot. Have Google changed the way these visits are calculated? I can't see anything on the blog - anyone experiencing similar issues Bush
