Duplicate Page Title/Content Issues on Product Review Submission Pages
-
Hi Everyone,
I'm very green to SEO. I have a Volusion-based storefront and recently decided to dedicate more time and effort into improving my online presence. Admittedly, I'm mostly a lurker in the Q&A forum but I couldn't find any pre-existing info regarding my situation. It could be out there. But again, I'm a noob...
So, in my recent SEOmoz report I noticed that over 1,000 Duplicate Content Errors and Duplicate Page Title Errors have been found since my last crawl. I can see that every error is tied to a product in my inventory - specifically each product page has an option to write a review. It looks like the subsequent page where a visitor can fill out their review is the stem of the problem. All of my products are shown to have the same issue:
Duplicate Page Title - Review:New
Duplicate Page Content - the form is already partially filled out with the corresponding product
My first question - It makes sense that a page containing a submission form would have the same title and content. But why is it being indexed, or crawled (or both for that matter) under every parameter in which it could be accessed (product A, B, C, etc)?
My second question (an obvious one) - What can I do to begin to resolve this?
As far as I know, I haven't touched this option included in Volusion other than to simply implement it. If I'm missing any key information, please point me in the right direction and I'll respond with any additional relevant information on my end. Many thanks in advance!

Hi DakotahW,
Our store front is Volusion based as well and we recently began using Moz to aid in our efforts to improve our site SEO. We are experiencing the same problem with duplicate page content.
How did you go about correcting this issue? Do you have any advice on how we can avoid these errors?

1.) I can access the source code, and there is an option to override the default meta info for the review template using custom HTML - this is where I want to add the meta NOINDEX tag, correct?
Yes, sounds right
*also, it's pretty common sense but just to double check... if I add HTML to this field I'll want to paste the entire page's source code with the new robots meta tag included, not just the meta tag by itself, right?
Mmmm.... this sounds suspicious, especially if you are only editing the default meta info. You might need to do a little experimentation to figure this out.
2.) This is the direction where I was beginning to lean... in this case if the URL was "www.example.com/ReviewNew.asp?ProductCode=BLUEHAT13" would the parameter that identifies the reviews be "ReviewNew.asp" ?
The parameter here is "ProductCode" - which raises a good point. You want to make sure that this parameter isn't used by other page template, because you might block those as well.
Hope this helps.

Hi Cyrus,
Yes, each product page has a link to another page containing product review form they can fill out. And the more I continue to learn on the forum here, I'm beginning to understand why e-commerce platforms like Volusion aren't always the most friendly SEO-wise.

Due to a growing lack of confidence in Volusion's out-of-the-box SEO features, I fear simply checking a box within their backend for a "one solution to all problems" may come back and bite me in the rear. I had briefly looked into parameter handling from Google Webmaster Tools and think this may be a better long-term solution. Not to mention, that I can at least identify when/where any issues originate from when/if they arise. Perhaps I'm beginning to outgrow my current shopping cart?
Anyways, thank you for the insightful response. Cheers!

Hi KLLC,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Making these pages no-index was my initial thought as it made the most sense. I know Volusion isn't the most SEO-friendly, so I think the biggest problem is understanding which of their out-of-the-box features can accomplish this without compromising how the rest of my site is crawlable. Again, thanks for the help!

Hi Dakotah,
If I understand correctly, you have multiple "leave a review" pages showing up in your SEOmoz reports, and each page is pretty much identical.
Yes, you are correct that you generally want to keep those pages out of the index.
Unfortunately, I don't believe Volusion is the most SEO friendly platform out of the box, and wrangling with it may require a bit of HTML knowledge
1. If you can access the source code, (using the LiveEdit function, perhaps?) it may serve you well to add a Meta NOINDEX tag to the head of your review template.
2. On the other hand, if this proves to technical, another option is parameter handling in Google Webmaster Tools. You'll need a verified Webmaster account for this. You'd want to find, or enter, the parameter that identifies the reviews, i.e."?ProductCode=" and set googlebot to NO URLs.
Both of these options are both advanced and potentially dangerous. Back up your work and keep records of everything in case you need to make changes, or get someone to help.
Hope this helps. Let us know if you need more info, or if we're headed in the right direction. (Full disclosure - not many SEOs work with Volusion, so my knowledge is extremely limited)

Hello,
If you talk about SEOMoz crawler and the errors you get from your report, you must have basis changes for the critical issues. Example: you have added a review for each item page, tip: It must be built-in with the item page so that it will prevent you creating new pages with same title and ofcourse same content.
Second tip is if a review page follows to new page make that page nofollow, no-index so it will help or guide BOTS not to index these pages and your issue will be solved.

Ecommerce Site - Duplicate product descriptions & SKU pages
Hi I have a couple of questions regarding the best way to optimise SKU pages on a large ecommerce site. At the moment we have 2 landing pages per product - one is the primary landing page with no SKU, the other includes the SKU in the URL so our sales people & customers can find it when using the search facility on the site. The SKU landing page has a canonical pointing to the primary page as they're duplicates. Is this the best way? Or is it better to have the one page with the SKU in the URL? Also, we have loads of products with the very similar product descriptions, I am working on trying to include a unique paragraph or few sentences on these to improve the content - how dangerous is the duplicate content within your own site? I know its best to have totally unique content, but it won't be possible on a site with thousands of products and a small team. At the moment I am trying to prioritise the products to update. Thank you 🙂

Possible to Improve Domain Authority By Improving Content on Low Page Rank Pages?
My sites domain authority is only 23. The home page has a page authority of 32. My site consists of about 400 pages. The topic of the site is commercial real estate (I am a real estate broker). A number of the sites we compete against have a domain authority of 30-40. Would our overall domain authority improved if we re-wrote the content for several hundred of pages that had the lowest page authority (say 12-15)? Is the overall domain authority derived by an average of the page authority of each page on a domain? Alternatively could we increase domain authority by setting the pages with the lowest page authority to "no index". By the way our domain is www.nyc-officespace-leader.com Thanks, Alan

Duplicate Content... Really?
Hi all, My site is www.actronics.eu Moz reports virtually every product page as duplicate content, flagged as HIGH PRIORITY!. I know why. Moz classes a page as duplicate if >95% content/code similar. There's very little I can do about this as although our products are different, the content is very similar, albeit a few part numbers and vehicle make/model. Here's an example:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | seowoody
http://www.actronics.eu/en/shop/audi-a4-8d-b5-1994-2000-abs-ecu-en/bosch-5-3
http://www.actronics.eu/en/shop/bmw-3-series-e36-1990-1998-abs-ecu-en/ate-34-51 Now, multiply this by ~2,000 products X 7 different languages and you'll see we have a big dupe content issue (according to Moz's Crawl Diagnostics report). I say "according to Moz..." as I do not know if this is actually an issue for Google? 90% of our products pages rank, albeit some much better than others? So what is the solution? We're not trying to deceive Google in any way so it would seem unfair to be hit with a dupe content penalty, this is a legit dilemma where our product differ by as little as a part number. One ugly solution would be to remove header / sidebar / footer on our product pages as I've demonstrated here - http://woodberry.me.uk/test-page2-minimal-v2.html since this removes A LOT of page bloat (code) and would bring the page difference down to 80% duplicate.
(This is the tool I'm using for checking http://www.webconfs.com/similar-page-checker.php) Other "prettier" solutions would greatly appreciated. I look forward to hearing your thoughts. Thanks,
Woody 🙂1 -
Is it best to have products and reviews on the same URL?
Hi Moz, Is it better to have products and reviews on the same or different URLs? I suspect that combining these into one page will help with rankings overall even though some ranking for product review terms may suffer. This is for a hair products company with tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of reviews. Thanks for reading!

Duplicate page content query
Hi forum, For some reason I have recently received a large increase in my Duplicate Page Content issues. Currently it says I have over 7,000 duplicate page content errors! For example it says: Sample URLs with this Duplicate Page Content http://dikelli.com.au/accessories/gowns/news.html http://dikelli.com.au/accessories/news.html
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | sterls
http://dikelli.com.au/gallery/dikelli/gowns/gowns/sale_gowns.html However there are no physical links to any of these page on my site and even when I look at my FTP files (I am using Dreamweaver) these directories and files do not exist. Can anyone please tell me why the SEOMOZ crawl is coming up with these errors and how to solve them?0 -
Duplicate Content on Press Release?
Hi, We recently held a charity night in store. And had a few local celebs turn up etc... We created a press release to send out to various media outlets, within the press release were hyperlinks to our site and links on certain keywords to specific brands on our site. My question is, should we be sending a different press release to each outlet to stop the duplicate content thing, or is sending the same release out to everyone ok? We will be sending approx 20 of these out, some going online and some not. So far had one local paper website, a massive football website and a local magazine site. All pretty much same content and a few pics. Any help, hints or tips on how to go about this if I am going to be sending out to a load of other sites/blogs? Cheers

Load balancing - duplicate content?
Our site switches between www1 and www2 depending on the server load, so (the way I understand it at least) we have two versions of the site. My question is whether the search engines will consider this as duplicate content, and if so, what sort of impact can this have on our SEO efforts? I don't think we've been penalised, (we're still ranking) but our rankings probably aren't as strong as they should be. The SERPs show a mixture of www1 and www2 content when I do a branded search. Also, when I try to use any SEO tools that involve a site crawl I usually encounter problems. Any help is much appreciated!
